yep, just had an almighty burst of rain here near Navan! The darkness before hand was unreal.....

The shower just clearing here now but that rain was fairly intense, all the gutters are overflowing here. More heavy showers could arrive later and they may turn thundery as well, particularly in southern and south-western areas.

Still Sunny in Arklow and the Southeast

    Lovely in fact

And maybe the possibility of some thundery imports from the SE over the weekend, what's not to like ?

    Currently 16.2c

Wind is coastal already though so unlikely to rise

It's been quite some time since we had a really bad nationwide summer, 2012 was probably the last real pigs ear of a summer. The charts at the moment are very grim and we've been here before when the Atlantic breaks through like this at the start of summer, it can be very difficult to shift and usually results in several sustained weeks of unsettled muck across Ireland and most of the UK while the near continent and sometimes SE of England can have intense heat with thundery breakdowns. Could be an interesting June for them.

It won't rain every single day but any dry days we do get, those will have to be made the most of. Over the next 5 days Donegal may be the place to be with less in the way of rainfall and warmer temperatures.

If you use the hover mode on Wetterzentrale, the green area over Northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland and just west of Ireland rotates over and over like a fan keeping us in a constant loop of westerly winds and low pressure right up to the end of the run. This is the pattern that is going to prove very difficult to shift. The Azores high has a very tough job on it's hands to extend northwards and may spend much of this month south of the English channel.

I am still feeling hopeful that somehow we may see an improvement towards the end of June. If we were to get one decent very warm and settled week this summer, it would be something.

Given how lately we seem to get locked into patterns for a while, it's hard to see anything changing for 2-3 weeks at least.

Ya that met eireann forecast on website is pants. Yesterday it had sun for today, today it has mostly sunny for today for Sligo.

Actual weather windy cold and cloudy 14c

It actually looks like a small low is embedded over Ireland bringing cloud and some showers. Met Eireann say tomorrow will be sunny . However it could also turn out cloudy too though the power of it being a Saturday might break up the cloud. When are Saturdays not sunny this year. Then it's back to the normal Sunday rain though Monday and Tuesday could be fair days in the West and North before an unsettled period for a week or two.

So, today has been black skies, blue skies. North Wicklow. And cold. No rain. Fantastic mix to be honest! Had a couple of pints outside to ring in the long weekend.

At least the unsettled weather makes for some interesting cloudscapes and nice light 🙂

These are the late spring/early summers that make me want to live abroad. When we get a good April and May the summer feels long but when May and June are washout it feels like you're waiting for summer to start and then suddenly it's Autumn again. It's very annoying seeing rain on the charts for most of the bank holiday weekend, and seemingly up to the end of the model runs, especially with the amount of outdoor work I need to do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,097 ✭✭✭mcburns07

Poor morning in Cork, overcast and breezy. Rain on the way. Happy Bank Holiday everyone! 🥲

You are spot on, feels like gale force winds yet again here in North County Dublin.

They could at least harness the wind + give us free electricity!

Dull grey start to the day and looks like it'll be raining for much of the afternoon. East Cork.

I've been on this forum for over 15 years now but I've never witnessed the level of pessimism and cynicism that's become very widespread here in the past year or two. I'm wondering if the pandemic has had some sort of psychological effect on people, even as far as changing their perception of weather.

There are still a couple of posters who seem to be unaffected, but the majority now seem to see the absolute worst in the weather every day and have zero hope of anything nice weatherwise for the rest of the summer that's only just begun.

Relax, people. Take a moment to reflect. The weather's not been as bad as you think. Look up stats for your area and you'll see that it's business as usual.

  • Registered Users Posts: 497 ✭✭The HorsesMouth

Couldn't agree more with the above comment. As for reading into charts two weeks from now...the weather experts find it hard to read some charts a few days out. Even look at today...met eireann had north lenister clear by now and I can confirm it is still very cloudy.

No one should get down hearted about any long range charts, IMO it's way way too quick to write off June. Things change so quickly.

A cool and windy morning here in Meath, but at least it's dry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,097 ✭✭✭mcburns07

It has been a good year so far absolutely, but patterns seem to be locking in for a while lately. We’ve benefited from that in recent months but now we’re probably going to see the other side of it where we get stuck in an Atlantic driven pattern for a while. Who knows what July will bring but we’ll probably end up with an unsettled June at least. Mother Nature always balances the books 🙂 and we’re due some rain.

Lovely day in Arklow despite the breeze

We can see the bank of cloud looking south in this photo

    Hopefully another light show tonight

Nice and dry hear near Trim but the east wind would cut ye! Good drying weather though 😁

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,965 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

I would agree but those of us who love cold in the winter and warm in the summer it hasn't been great. The Atlantic and the PV completely stole our winter yet again. The Atlantic went on holidays for most of Spring which was nice but now that the summer has arrived it looks as if the Atlantic is back big time. How long this last's for is a bit of an unknown. Here is hoping we see a serious improvement in the weather/ a flip to summer around the middle of June.

If this summer ends up being a 2007 then the coming Winter better make up for it!

Dungarvan absolutely Baltic and gusty. Real feel below 10 degrees and raining. Horrible.

Chilly and cloudy in Meath too, 13C but feels colder and that wind would cut you in two. A day to stay inside. Tomorrow and Monday will be even colder than today.

As well as all the pessimism and cynicism, I am not getting the whole we are due a poor summer thing. Summer 2020 was bloody awful and every bar as bad as 2012 in my books for my area, July especially was horrendous. Summer 2019 was better than I gave it credit for at the time. Summer 2021 wasn't a patch on 2018 and personally it is very overrated. If July didn't have that heatwave, it would have been an awful month and as cloudy as July 2020 (in fact we were running cloudier than 2020 as of the 13th). July 2021 is probably the most polarising month I have experienced and very difficult to rate. August up to final week was awful as usual too. June apart from how dry it was, was nothing special.

The past week has been much better here than I expected. Sunday was fine, Monday was poor admittedly, Tuesday started fine and ended awful but downpours were fun, Wednesday was stunning, Thursday similar to Tuesday, Friday the opposite of Thursday and today has been sunny spells here. A bit on the cool side with that brisk northeasterly breeze but meh it's still only early June.

All signals I have seen point towards a mixed summer with another poor August in store courtesy of La Niña. I don't expect great things out of this summer but least at this time of year fine days will come every now and then even in the worst of summers which can't say the same for winter. Ideally would like to see a northward adjustment to the jet stream to try and get a push from the Azores high which isn't likely any time soon based on the NAO forecast which is currently in a negative phase since the final week of May. I've been avoiding looking at the models as they're too grim at the moment or were changing too much to draw anything from.

Remember saying I wouldn't be surprised if March turned out to be the sunniest month of the year, that's still a possibility as neither April or May was as sunny almost anywhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,097 ✭✭✭mcburns07

That’s fair enough Syran but 11 degrees in the middle of the afternoon is pretty poor even by our low standards 😢

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,666 ✭✭✭✭sryanbruen

Ye when I speak for the temp, I'm only referring to my area of Dublin which I am pretty exposed to northeasterly winds. 11C is awful. It's currently around 14C here with sunny spells still whilst breezy but can see all the cloud that others may have further inland and to my south.

Edit: It's clouding over more significantly here now too as I speak.

Edit 2: Now the sun has disappeared.

Stunning day here in Enniscrone, sunny north-west for a change.

    Reached 15.4c here in Arklow

Pleasant enough out of the wind

Bits of blue left and one light rain shower

The 15.4c was impressive enough considering the breeze in off the sea

Hi all. Is Dublin going to be a washout tomorrow evening? Going to Noel Gallagher in St Anne's park, clontarf road. And the forecast looks horrendous!! I have the wellies and poncho at the ready. God .. such utter misery for June :-(

I know most of my posts on the weather forum are quite positive as we usually get plenty of nice calm days throughout the other seasons that I am very grateful for. January this year was gorgeous for e.g. Summer just always seems to disappoint me though, this is the only season I find frustrating as I just don't seem to be able to come to terms with us not getting real summers like the rest of Europe even though I have lived in Ireland for most of my life.

So for summer people who want to just be able to sit outside in a t-shirt in the evening in June or simply lie on the grass in a park reading a book or catch some rays, it just always seems to disappoint.

Today wasn't too bad in Dublin in the end, the wind is cold but sun is warm, still way too blustery for my liking though. Must try harder.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,120 ✭✭✭compsys

Exactly. Some posters on here get way too caught up in the weather on one particular day. Writing off an entire month on the back of a bad afternoon.

Also, funny seeing some posters now talk about good summers in previous years (whereas at the time they were bemoaning the lack of high temps or sun every second day).

Also, did people miss the fact that May was a record breaker for warmth in some areas?

Finally, a reminder of what regular temps in Ireland are for some perspective:

    May - 13 - 15º

    June - 16 - 18º

    July - 19/20º

    August - 19/20º

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,329 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

May was statistically warm but it was definitely a case of lies, lies and damn statistics. It was very cool and windy for a lot of the month. The night time temperature didn't drop much over the day time temps so the average temp was statistically good. There was a few nice days over but overall found it a very unsettled month.

Today has been a dire day in the south. Went to the Cork and Louth game earlier and got drenched and was very cool. Awful.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,120 ✭✭✭compsys

Well I can't speak for everywhere, but in Dublin the temp got up to 16 or 17º on many days - which is more akin to the temps you'd get in June.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,329 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

Exactly. Just because you had some nice days in Dublin doesn't mean the rest of the country had great weather. Today was an awful day in the south.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,120 ✭✭✭compsys

Well I'm talking about the month of May. Not today.

Besides, according to Met E, every station in the country was far warmer than average in May. And Cork had around half its usual rainfall.

Do you mean to tell me there are people on a website giving out about the Irish weather!

    Shock horror I don't believe it🤣

Just for reference as I mentioned we usually always get a beach visit in around June Bank Holiday as temperatures over 20 degrees, not a hope this year.

Thankfully sun did come out but hasn't made much difference here in NCD because the wind is so strong.

I agree with Thelonious Monk, I suppose we expect too much of summer in Ireland.

Dry, sunny days in winter and spring I always see as a bonus but I don't think it's too much to ask to be able to sit outside on 4th June and for it to feel like more than 11 degrees.

May in theory was warm but we had a lot of very wet days, it was windy and warmer than normal evenings sweked the statistics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,120 ✭✭✭compsys

Yes - usually I'd have started sea swimming by now - but haven't. Even though sea temps are a tiny bit above average.

I understand why some people are feeling a bit annoyed with the weather but some perspective really is needed. We're not the Med. And let's be thankful most of us (not all of us!) are well able to afford a cheap flight away to the sun for a week or two at some stage each summer.

Also, we had a very dry first few months in some places - so unfortunately the rain was bound to come back eventually.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 16,965 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

The thing that is probably annoying people is the fact that we've had warmer and dryer than normal conditons for a long time now and the weather gods decided to flip back to a cool and unsettled Atlantic pattern just in time for summer, not knowing how long this pattern will go on for.
