It's the massive downside of social media and 24/7 news coverage. A lot of people jump from crusade to crusade based only on what the consensus on their feeds and the clickbait headlines are rather than them actually having particular feelings on it themselves.

Irish people love to be loved and validated by others, not just at home but particularly by those abroad. It's why we soak up the worst of these crusades and increasingly try to copy/paste primarily American social/cultural/racial issues into a society where it has absolutely no place - namely ours!

A friend of mine put a comment in our group chat the other day about him walking through Dublin city centre the other night and seeing a massive queue near the GPO. He thought it was something to do with Ukraine, but no, apparently it was people feeding the homeless. He was pissed off - as he put it "people will protest about issues outside of the country, but do f-all about local issues".

He's not wrong, and neither are you.

Claire Byrne asking Minister Donnelly if he's concerned about rising numbers, any plans to re-introduce legal requirement to wear masks. She can't let go

This is so true - could be the 11th commandment at this stage,.

this a a huge national failing from the plebs on the street to the highest office in the dail - it makes us weak and easy to manipulate.

No, my attitude is that I really couldn't give a shíte about the Late Late Show and it has absolutely no effect on me.

I see a bit of a spike happening in the hospital/ICU figures again according to the COVID hub, also despite PCR testing now only being open to a small proportion of the population the positive numbers are still around the 4,000 mark. Anybody with insight as to why this is? A double omicron peak brought on by less mask wearing is my guess

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,628 ✭✭✭Micky 32

The rise is happening in the UK also. I expect this thread and the other one will be hopping very soon 😫

    However according to Donnelly :

“Minister Donnelly said he said he is not concerned

about the trends in terms of the population.

"The ongoing advice I have from public health is

that while the numbers are high, the total amount

of severe illness in the country is still low.

"The public health advice I have, is they are not

    flagging concerns,”

HSE saying trends are broadly positive and there are reports of outbreaks in a number of hospitals. As others have commented NPHET expected this to happen, with the relaxation and disappearance of restrictions. COVID has been downgraded to being considered as alarming as flu' cases, not surprising as we now have antivirals in the toolbox.

A soike was expected sure, we removed masks so viruses of all types would spread, flu is on the rise also.

We got covid this week, like a bad hangover/flu. Give it a few days and be grand

Am I misremembering or did Delta spike twice as well? Yeah the UK had their second Delta spike last August, I recall a lot of Europe had spikes around the same time as us

I'm not worried but it's an interesting trend I think, the nerd inside me is actually kinda excited to see what the next variant will be, if there even is one

And much better to read about COVID these days than Ukraine I think we can all agree

Incredibly easy to book a PCR test if you're under 55. I did it myself for a recovery cert, knew I was positive already (no booster).

    It does effect you unfortunately

but sh1tehawks like tubridy and his show (sadly) have significant weight to their message - be it opinion or guests .

A large number of people will be swayed by his message and that drives opinions esp but not limited to the blue rinse brigade.

Opinions drive politics esp at a local level - all politics being local and all that....and nothing moves like a backbencher worried about his seat.

Penfailed is now suffering lockdowns and cancelled concerts cos of a climate of fear rooted in montrose.

I hate it too but that's Irish society at times.

Could be a hospital outbreak among those in ICU for other causes. The overall numbers testing positive in the general population does not appear to be rising at present and the number of deaths with covid does not appear to be rising.

I'm glad to hear it - and long may it continue but my point was you are only a Tubridy segment of hysteria away from something being imposed on us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,806 ✭✭✭Penfailed

I take your point, however, an audience wearing masks, on a TV show I don't watch, isn't something that I'm going to get worked up about.

certain science and media are still flogging that dead horse.

an article in the indo on "endemic delusion" today based on an article in Science.

the science folk wont let their 15min of fame die without a fight.

"Science" ... yeah they don't even realise they are the most religiously "scientific" out there.

So long as we agree with it, and it doesn't go against the narrative then it's The Science(TM)

I get the feeling you have fundamentally misunderstood why people have a problem with this, but then that doesn’t surprise me.

I'm one of the sheeple, so Ii'll go along with the vast majority who don't have a problem with a couple of hundred people wearing masks on the Late Late.

    The worriers can worry on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 29,464 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

I think you have that backwards. The worriers are not the ones who actually are carrying on.

The worriers in this context were the ones who presumably insisted that a room full of people mask up when every other situation outside that studio has indeed moved on to letting people decide for themselves.

Will we see an introduction of restrictions again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 7,472 ✭✭✭Allinall

    According to the worriers- yes.

The government will have seen the Late Late Show and having seen all the audience wearing masks that it must be the right thing to do.

Expect an announcement after tonight’s show.

Except when they were having a leaving party in the height of the pandemic fear, then it was okay

No, we won't. COVID is now on par with flu' and how the HSE deals with that.

If the hospitalisations keep rising that could change. I’m hoping it’s just BA.2 finding the nooks and crannies that BA.1 didn’t find and it’s just a small spike.
