Tesla Supercharger network in Ireland

It's still only a trial. If there is enough capacity in a certain area / country for the Supercharger network to be shared with non-Teslas, I'm all for it. It will make the experience better for the owners of all EVs, not just Teslas and as such it will promote the move to electric transport.

The rate charged for non-owners should be at premium level though, at least at Ionity levels (who offer an inferior service). There are fast chargers in the Netherlands all over the place, I'd say a substantial number of EV owners do not even have home or work charging and that's grand over there

This is not going to happen any time soon in the likes of California, where there are already queues at busy days. And I can't see it happen in Ireland either, until we get a lot more and bigger Superchargers opening up

The rate if you pay the monthly sub in NL is the same as a tesla owner, literally the only differentiator is the monthly 13 quid. This is terrible.

It's also cheaper than Ionity, ecars, fastned etc. Same in Norway, bjorn showed the app and the sub is cheaper than fortum, gronn kontakt, ionity, circle k etc.

...only thing is Tesla will then be the defacto charging hubs in Ireland due to eCars incompetence and Ionity pricing and be swamped

And then upgrading the SuC sites (which will need to happen) will be a ball ache due to Anna's cousin in Networks...

At least Tesla have the cash to pay for whatever upgrades they'll need to make!!

How to park your BMW at Tesla supercharger

"As you guys have seen, sometimes even Tesla people can't get it right"

    =;-)

I see France is opening up more chargers (technically OT I know!) but only for "residents" of the already opened up countries. Does anyone know what is required to be a resident in Tesla's eyes? A postal address? A native payment method...?

That's all well and good, but do you honestly think non Tesla drivers will give a flying fcuk if they're blocking a Tesla or not.... particularly in Ireland. (Maybe Norway will be fine mostly because they are years ahead of us in EV uptake).

You just know that in Ireland it would turn into a sh1t show.

Yeah, even in the video there was a Tesla not optimally parked. Never underestimate how stupid/ignorant/lazy the masses can be.

And the whole thing falls down when the one "end spot" is taken anyway.

It will be a sh1tshow. Hopefully it simply doesnt come here. To date, it's only come in areas where govt funding is being given.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66,634 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Well the government has given eCars an illegal subsidy of well over 10 million with almost nothing to show for it. Does that mean they will have to pay Tesla at least that much too and that in turn means the SuC network will be opened to all?

The fact it takes a video that long to explain this problem says it all really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,106 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

If the subsidy were illegal the EU would have acted by now. It's not illegal, just moronic. Same as excluding the ecars network from the RAB was. Or handing it to ecars for free. Or pretty much any decision taken by Anna and friends.

In my years of SuC I've never once seen a misparked Tesla, with cable length it's very hard not to park bang on. This comment is based on the critical fact you had to reverse into the SuC spot, I've never seen a SuC layout where the cable can be accessed from the "opposite" side like Norway configs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,106 ✭✭✭✭ELM327

Thats just because we never had and probably wont if ever have, a site large enough to justify that layout!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,178 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Yeah the drive-thru layout looks nice, if not a bit confusing at first, but a site like that is never happening in Ireland (until at least 7 years and 10 months passes when there will be 1m EV's on the road).

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,825 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

Yep, but even across Scotland I've never seen that layout. I do be there a while also when I have the time as the car has free SuC so I often see car's come and go while I try and best my 2048 score.

I'm highly tempted by the new MIC Model 3 so alas the free SuC will be taken if I trade in

That always irritates me, people trading in free SC01 cars and giving up the benefit. You have a P90DL if memory serves? Why would you downgrade that to a made in china model 3 rwd.

It's a fully loaded 85 with 8months CPO left on it and a year battery/drivetrain, now is just a good time to sell, I move on every two years in any case

    https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-free-supercharing-europe/

"Tesla is offering free Supercharging for select sites in Europe to “avoid the rush this winter holiday.” Free Supercharging will be available along travel routes in France, Germany, Norway, and Sweden."

Has this ever happened in Ireland or the UK?

Should be a good test to see how the network copes with non Tesla owners.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66,634 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Doesn't free supercharging create more rush? 😂

Yes but its free supercharging late at night and early in the morning. Basically if you are flexible you can save 15-20 quid. Works if you can move your trip around but I wouldnt bother.

Is it because the expect certain sites to be overloaded at peak times and they want to prevent this by encouraging users to avoid peak times? It makes sense on peak peak days, particularly if their data supports this. I know many Germans go on holiday to Spain driving non stop through France. The french don't like the Germans, so they holiday in Spain by driving. It's part of the reason for tolled motorways across France that in some areas are intended for Germans passing through. It's probably not viable for Tesla to upgrade sites that may only be full a few hours a year.

Been in Sandyford store today. The supercharger site works were in full swing. They were taking out all plants and machinery preparing to resurface the area.

"This isn't the first hint that Tesla intends to do the same in the U.S., but the automaker's proposal appears to ask for funding in return—for the existing Tesla-only Supercharger connectors, as well as the CHAdeMO connectors used by a dwindling number of EVs such as the Nissan Leaf, as long as they're co-located with CCS connectors.

"Tesla or CHAdeMO connectors should be eligible for rebates as long as there is a CCS connector at the location for every rebated Tesla or CHAdeMO connector," the automaker said.

Real estate is one of the biggest obstacles to growing charging infrastructure; Tesla adding CCS and CHAdeMO connectors to its existing sites could provide a shortcut."

Most of that relates to the US where they have a different connector, which creates issues unique to the States.

As the article states, EU uses the CCS connector so it a different story here when it comes to opening up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,178 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

And to make matters worse, in America the DC standard is CCS1 as opposed to our CCS2 in Europe... and it's fully as hell!!

Tesla can build a 12 stall supercharger in 8 days.

What was the fastest supercharger install here?

And then you have to wait for however long for ESB to connect it...

That's why I suggested in a jest earlier that Tesla should take over the ESBN. I'm sure they could speedup the connection process from 6-12 months to days or maybe a week.

Mahon Point was quite fast. Was not even advertised on the map as coming soon.
