Has Tesla made any comments about any new sites in Ireland that aren’t already known, or are there any rumours of possible new locations?

There is apparently site picked somewhere in the SouthEast, but can't be announced yet until all agreements are signed (thats all I know about it).

They are actively seeking out new partners though for SuC sites, so if you know of anywhere, like a hotel, retail park etc... please forward them the link to enquire about becoming a partner.

Of the 5 ionity charger locations, 3 are limited to 200kW max.

You can put in an interest but getting a response is another issue. I had some good locations and submitted an interest, same with another person I know and didn't receive any response either. And these are over a few months now

Hopefully the site in the south east is the Gorey services.

Limited to 200kw....shucks that sucks at least its not 150kw, that would be far too slow. Seriously I am only messing with the chap massively impressed with 250kw chargers when ionity have 350kw most installed 2 years ago and a huge network across europe. Ireland is actually well covered by them unless you are driving a leaf and need to charge ever couple of minutes. Tesla folk tend to forget its not the only game in town. Cant wait for the backlash when the Supercharger network opens up here to other EV's like it is in france, I can only imagine the saltyness.

I would hope there's no backlash as that's wasted energy. However, as a Tesla owner I do not want the frustration of someone taking up two spaces when charging, that's the killer.

I am sure every infraction will be photographed and posted online with righteous outrage.

    Hopefully so.

I can't wait to see a picture of 3 ID.4's charging in Enfield and occupying the full 6 spaces!!!

I presume you're taking the pīss when you say Ireland is well covered by Ionity!!

    Those 5 sites 😂😂

I pass that site at Kill north numerous times a week at different hours of the day and 95% of the time it's empty. Is it just that's it's too expensive or that it's not in a great location?

I've a suspicion that Ionity aren't going to open up any more sites in Ireland until they see if Tesla open their sites first.

Where's the Enfield SC located, close to Applegreen M4, east or westbound? Not showing up yet in the car.

Just off the "old" Enfield bypass/half ring road in Johnstown House, keep bearing left as you enter Johnstown house and you'll see them

My OCD doesn't let me let it go. Ionity has 6 locations

According to supercharge.info Tesla opened 18 sites in Europe this month and we're still counting. Most of them are with more than 10 stalls. Not the most accurate data but still, impressive.

Never had a problem using Ionity for rapid charging getting anywhere in Ireland north or south. Small country few centrally located chargers on motorways is all you need. I used Tesla supercharger network for a good while too and its also good, but its not the "huge USP" it was made out to be, not in Ireland with the distances we can travel, but I have not found either to have been a problem. I can charge significantly faster on an Ionity also which saves a bit of time. The Gorey location is handy too for the south east trips. I have 22kw AC charging also so even driving in the boonies with short stay times in a location are not a big problem. Not slagging off Tesla here, just saying when it comes to charging performance and charging network technology they are not state of the art. They need liquid cooling cause they are low voltage....thats not a feature, its a work around.

Seeing the state of the other networks in Ireland I'd say when Tesla opens them for everybody the sites will be really well utilised.

It'll be a shít show. The network for fast charging is really poor.

Tomorrow I've a round trip of 626 kilometres. Dublin - Inch beach - Dublin. I know that when I stop in Birdhill there will be nobody there or max 1 or 2 cars. Probably the same on the way home.

Now imagine that trip if I'm competing with almost every other manufacturer. The summer's will be worse. A Tesla driver queuing to use a Tesla charger because a BMW is there or because 2 spaces are being taken up by a vehicle who's charging port isn't designed to use the charging spot correctly.

    Great.

How do you find Ionity for reliability? Have stopped twice in Cashel and both times the first charger I tried didn't work and had to swap onto the next one. Was ok as there was one free but pretty frustrating and time consuming with apps etc.. compared to plug in and walk away at a supercharger

Ballysimon road 150kw CCS and a 50kw CCS (couple of leaf chargers too) ESB is on the way too mfceiling. Or reroute to Ionity Cashill its a 15 minute detour but charging speed will make up for that. I actually think Cashil is a better road but thats just me.

Where are the other EV's charging right now? Are they suddenly going to stop using the chargers they are currently using? Whats to stop the Tesla owner using a non tesla fast charger? Will the tesla supercharger milkshake bring all the EV's to the yard when its opened?

I find ionity very good never any issues. Depends on your car TBH. There have been software updates last year made them much more reliable on the handshake. I have a car that communicated with ionity directly so plug and charge. Because they are expensive for casuals they are mostly available for the more prepared EV user. I find the experiance very similar to a tesla supercharger just faster.

Look nobody wants first gen leafs holding up superchargers, but in general I find EV owners that have the cars to utilise the fast chargers, are clued in. Sure you have to install the tesla app, and register an account, and manually start the charger...its not a noob manoeuvre.

If I was a non-Tesla owner and had previously been relying on eCars, hoping the charge point was working and that there was no one ahead of me, I would almost definitely plan my future routes around Tesla SuC sites to avoid those problems.

Equally if I was too worried about being delayed waiting for an eCars unit to become available and previously decided to bring a second ICE car instead, the availability of Tesla SuC might change my mind and encourage me to bring my EV instead.

People will continue to use eCars and whatever else they’re using today but opening the SuC network to everyone will give people more options and a better experience. In a growing EV market, it might even help the ecosystem keep its head above water.

Given their reliability and multiple stalls the SuC network will be the defacto charging stop of choice if en route or slightly off route.

I pulled into Birdhill earlier this morning. 2 stalls taken with 2 model S. I took the 3rd stall.

    That's an early Thursday morning.

One more vehicle looking for a charge and one of us was sharing the stall so losing power. Definitely will become a case of waiting to charge a Tesla at a Tesla charger.

Oh and the obligatory Kia Sportage jeep taking a space as well even though the car park was half full.

Enfield now showing in both the Tesla app and in the car itself....

If you travel towards Belfast at the weekend there is a constant queue of cars at the Ecars with one charging and 1-n waiting for the 1st car to finish. At the same time maybe 0-2 stalls are used at the SuC. Seeing how bad the charging infra in North is, I can imagine an absolute flood of CCS cars charging at the Castlebellingham N/S when they are open to the other makes of cars.

Yeah, Leafs won't be there but everybody else will, many of whom will be also occupying 2 stalls. A Leaf would actually be a good citizen in this respect as port is on front middle of the car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,200 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

At least though in Castlebellingham if a CCS car was blocking 2 spots, you could probably park in tight behind the chargers and plug in that way, at least on the Southbound side anyway, might be a bit harder northbound given the layout of the chargers there, but I'm sure a way could be found... similar in Ballacolla & Enfield (would just need to park on the grass), but not workable in Birdhill & Mahon Point.

Highly advise not mounting the kerb in Enfield, who know how supportive that grass is for a 2MT+ EV and you could either beach or damage battery casing underneath

If tesla are going to persist with this nonsense of opening up to cars that have chargepoints in the wrong place, then this sort of kerb crawling nonsense is what's going to be needed on occasion. Any of the MEB cars will take up two spots.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,200 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

Yeah, I mounted a kerb in a hotel in the West last year to get closer to the charger, and the car came down on the kerb with an almighty thud with the wheel on the grass!!!

Ballacolla is fine as there's no kerb, and Castlebellingham southbound should be fine as well as there's paved road surface behind the chargers...

And the Castlebellingham is the largest charging site in Ireland if you count both North and Southbound stalls in one so all good.

But, in general, seen how expanding charging networks here has been so difficult/slow I can foresee perhaps one of the highest utilisation rates in the World for Tesla sites here when they open to everybody. Some of the current Ecars sites in Dublin must have world record number of hours in use.
