The premise is foolproof you would think.... people on discussing the news of the day in bitesize chunks. But the problem is that it has become so repetitive.... Ian Guider on discussing Tesla and the banks everyday is boring.... Cal Thomas is a US politics caricature (and downright racist on occasion, I really don't know why he keeps having him on). John Cadell is a frankly dislikable curmudgeon who is so predictable in his sense of disliking everything except boring re-releases of Bob Dylan B Sides from 1966.

Plus..... if you take into account the blindspot regarding reporting and anything Denis O'Brien related and you then have something properly corrupt going on.

That's why I stopped listening, it was so repetitive.

I think the fact that they limited the potential guests due to their bans on certain media outlets didn't help.

But every day it sounds so similar, despite discussing different topics.

Herself and Cal Thomas were on TLW yesterday

Meant to say nice to hear Cal recently and hear that he has recovered from his Trump affliction. Back to his old self.

Was listening to TLW on the way home yesterday. Absolute fluff piece about Generation Z young adults. Load of waffle, had to switch off after a few minutes. Telling them how tough they have it, how they're going to save the world. Every generation has it's own challanges and every generation had it's activists in their youth, they' werent as vocal about it with the lack of social media however! Really bad piece and it really shows how low in standards TLW has fallen. That sort of sh1te should have been on Spin 1038!

Talking about 9 11 tonight Marian on and of course had to get a bit in about the invasion of capital hill while Talking about the affect 9 11 had on the USA. No fan of Trump but no need to keep bringing him up at any opportunity .

Who was the Mick fella who was filling in for MC on the Last Word today?

Terrible radio presenter, his diction was shocking. He may well have known his stuff, but it always helps when you can understand what he's saying. Between his 'dems' and 'dats'.

And the 6 @ 6 reached new lows today. This guy and some terrible newsreader going head to head. It sounds like a poor student radio station.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,784 ✭✭✭✭padd b1975

Probably Mick Clifford, arguably the best print journalist around, not the clearest of speakers I would have to admit.

A hard listen for 2 and a half hours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,999 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

    Thanks for that.

No point being the best journo if you are hard to listen to.

I think if MC ever leaves, Frank Greaney has that gig sown up.

If Cooper ever leaves, it will be because the owners have been given the green light by the BAI to drop the show. The only good thing I'll say about Cooper is that he's been doing that show for 18 years which is a great stint. His predecessor Eamon Dunphy jumped ship after only 5 years and during his 5 years hosting the show, he'd go missing for the entire 3 months of summer and take frequent sick days the rest of the year.

Didn't realise MC was there so long.

Yep, he took over from Dunphy the first Monday of January 2003

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,999 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Would be interesting to listen back to his early shows and see how different the modern ones are.

Of course we are talking about a time when you could call someone elderly and not get scolded.

Here he is in 2010 getting stuck in to someone. Don't think he'd be so aggressive nowadays. The fight is gone from him.

He knows that if he gets stuck into somebody and says the wrong thing, the house of cards will fall on him. Like him or loathe him, George Hook got hounded from his radio show by the baying Twitter mob. Of course the very same thing'd happen to Cooper if he went against popular opinion. I also get the impression that he's surrounded by loads of "woke" colleagues on Today FM and it's easier to just go along with that than to fall out with them. With the huge workload he has, he can't afford to fall out with the people who support him in the workplace.

Brianna Parkins hosts TLW and not a stir on the thread!

I didnt exactly warm to her presenting style. What makes her qualified to present a current affairs radio show?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,104 ✭✭✭rolling boh

Wasn't really familiar with her also the bit I caught was of no real interest to me so can't really judge her what else does she do ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,226 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

I heard on some panel or other a while back. She is only living in Ireland 3 or 4 years and she seems to be called in as an expert on the "what do ye make of us Irish" debates.

I heard her ask Tony Cascarino a question about the Ireland Portugal match yesterday. She may as well have been reading the instruction booklet to a machine in a nuclear plant.

I wonder who she knows in Today FM and how well she knows them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,457 ✭✭✭Tork

Ah she's just flavour of the month for now. No harm to give her a go and see how she gets on. I'd still prefer to have Hugh Linehan from the Irish Times as a stand in. He did a good job before the Communicorp ban came in.

Ah, the "buy local" shills were on the radio again this evening.

"Not only does it support local businesses but there's also the carbon footprint impact as well"

Goodness me, where do they think the headphones, jeans, phones, laptops etc come? Made out the back of Seanie's Tech shop?

I will support myself, by getting the best price/service I can get and if that's with Amazon, so be it! By the way, Amazon support thousands of Irish jobs!

Was pleasantly surprised to see a female contributor get shut down by the other contributor yesterday evening.

A woman I think named Dee Reddy opened with a story about Damon Alburn basically saying he didn't like Taylor Swift because she co-wrote songs. Alburn also said he likes Billie Eilish (who actually co-writes her own songs too).

This Dee Reddy fool, said Alburns comments were misogynistic. The other contributor, I think named John butted in and rightly said how could it be misogynistic and that he thinks he can just dislike the artist named Taylor Swift no matter whether she's a woman or not.

Matt also read out a couple of texts agreeing with John such as "how could it be misogynistic when he says in the same sentence he likes Billie Eilish"

The Dee Reddy person then comes back into the conversation AGAIN saying it's misogynistic. She nearly broke her neck reaching saying pop is owned by women and that Alburn is giving out about pop.

Matt of course stayed quiet with his balls tucked in between his legs. Yet he had no issue being full of opinions during the crypto/NFT discussion before it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,999 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Anyone find it irritating how often Matt tells you who his contributor is when they are on with him?

Despite introducing them at the start of the segment, he will tell you another 2 or 3 times DURING the segment who they are.

For example, take Nick Ferrari. He will tell us that he is Nick Ferrari from LBCs Breakfast with Nick Ferrari, but in the middle of the interviewer, Matt might say, " just to ask you another question Nick, from Nick Ferrari Breakfast on LBC".

Or "Do you agree with that Daniel O'Connell, political correspondent with the Irish Independent".

That's just the way Matt (woke) cooper has become, leaves his balls outside the studio before starting the program, and will agree with any populist, woke agenda that is peddled.

Used to listen to him a good few years ago but very rarely now , when he used to have a bit of back bone and didn't mind having a different opinion to the populist view, but nowadays it's a male bashing, dreary pile of wokeness shite,

And as for that 5@5 and 6@6, 😒😩😵

Dee Reddy is painful. Much prefer when Claire Beck is on

She is in the haypenny place compared to that tool John Cladell. The man who claims to have great musical taste yet it still the man behind the music played on Today FM which is beyond awful anytime I happen to listen during the day.

On St Patrick's Day the last word will be 25 years old, I don't know if they are going to mark the occasion but they should as it's probably one of the longest running programs on national radio at this stage, it's a pretty good achievement considering that consultants strongly advised that it be axed for the January 98 relaunch of the radio station.

  • Registered Users Posts: 381 ✭✭Ballycommon Mast

Can anyone imagine Dunphy doing the 5@5 and 6@6 in his time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,999 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I see Matt got excited that the Cash Machine has rolled over to a new amount of over 30k.

Not a great conspiracy theorist myself, but these missed calls that are driving the total higher, why do I think the number they could be phoning is one of their own, and they just want the figure to roll over to get more interest and people talking about it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 381 ✭✭Ballycommon Mast

Does Cooper bare no shame shilling the cash machine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,457 ✭✭✭Tork

He'll do what he's told, just like every other employee on the station. Even Dunphy might have. Have you never heard the ads he reads out on his podcast?

  • Site Banned Posts: 12,341 ✭✭✭✭Faugheen

Don't see what that would do. Anyone who has entered on Monday and Tuesday doesn't have to enter again.

If you had mostly the same people playing every day, then the numbers entering would be proportionally lower every time it rolls over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,226 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

The 6 at 6 the other day included the story of a Kardashian having a baby.

And the US slot with Cal and Marion yesterday was non stop about Trump. Id guess they mentioned Trump more yesterday than they've mentioned Biden since he got the job.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,999 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Yeah it's gone very low brow.

No surprise the Kardashians makes their news.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,028 ✭✭✭✭ButtersSuki

Yes but part of this is because Biden is practically invisible as a president. It’s really bizarre, he’s almost in hiding.

Because he's almost 80, in Ireland he'd be considered far to old to be the junior minister for forestry let alone the top job

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,104 ✭✭✭rolling boh

Matt is one of many presenters here that still seems to be obsessed with Trump he brings him into any chat if at all possible. He has a willing partner when Marion is on she is the same either writing about him or talking about him .

Had stopped listening a while back due to Matt’s wokery style and obsession with Trump bashing.

Anyway while changing stations earlier, accidentally landed on todayfm while the American slot was in full flow.

Decided to listen on as I enjoy Cal, but right on que Matt was the usual hysterics ‘what about Trump’ this and that he didn’t even mention Biden... sigh!

In the business news after 6pm he even managed to get another Trump story in the discussion with the usual high pitched screaming voice.

But the best was yet to come, he had an interview lined up with a woman who worked in the sex trade aka an escort.

Anyway the whole interview and questions were framed around how big bad ‘rich powerful men’ were taking advantage of women.

Yet this woman knowingly went into the industry, because by her own admission, liked the money and attention that came with it.

Matt was the usual overly sympathetic with his breaking voice asking if the men ‘cared about’ her feelings etc.

Yet he never once question her on taking personal responsibility for her own situation.

If this was a serious station like LBC, the interviewer would throw in some hard questions to give the listener a balanced debate.

Honestly I couldn’t listen to it anymore so switched off at that stage, but I wondered afterwards if the whole thing was a cock n bull story to sell her book and that fact she remained anonymous and spoke with a D4 accent !

The whole 5 at 5 and 6 at 6 lark sounds terrible. Sports bulletin this evening and Matt asking the lad which Irish rugby player has Covid? And who are Manchester United playing in the Champions League? Just let him read it out!

That reads very much as though Matt's interview was little more than a regurgitation of Roisin Ingle's piece in The Irish Times last Saturday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,226 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

It will be interesting to see this evening how Matt will blame Trump for Russian invading Ukraine while absolving the wonderful saviour of democracy from Mayo of any blame whatsoever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,226 ✭✭✭✭BPKS

Amanda Brunker is on now discussing the situation in Ukraine.

Last time I heard her was on the Moncrieff show discussing a vibrator.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

Some joke having Brunker on talking about Ukraine.

She was saying she wishes Merkel could come back as she's an ally of Putin.....Matt correctly pointed out that's how we got into this problem by relying on Putin. Amanda had her tail between her legs then.

She was also pretty disgusted that Eurovision only banned Russia today and not yesterday....bit weird.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,823 ✭✭✭robo

Why is Amanda Brunker on every other Friday to talk about the week trending? Like why her?

I just don't get it, what's her link to Baur? It's only in th last few months that they seem to add her to the speed dial of panelists?
