The opposite actually, CB was in fact pushing the line that there is no reason now for hospitality not to open fully tonight. Doesnt suit your narrative though i suppose. On a similar note it is quite soemthing the amount of posters who rail against RTE and then announce that they never listen to it anyway

Really sorry to hear this.... been there myself, and its sucks.

I really hope people will 'stick' together on this as a nation and support local businesses as much as possible.. hope the future gets brighter for you soon.

Used to listen to it but stopped when it became a propaganda arm of Nphet. As soon as they smelt the government cash balanced reporting went out the window.

It's actually been very interesting over the course of the pandemic to look at the way different states have handled the response, and how it has frequently comported with what's known about their "big picture" history. From the places that refused to lockdown to the places that did so to an extreme and with half their population acting prison guards, the places that absolutely refused any notion of vaccine mandates and those that look set to implement them still, the places that went along with what other countries did and the places that were willing to strike out on their own, following the advice of their own health experts even when they differed from the "consensus" narrative.

The echoes of the not-too-distant past and the way countries seem to have their own "personality" despite the significant passage of time is fascinating to me.

Be interesting to see just how long the PUP and EWSS are maintained.

I'd be withdrawing them fairly quick - let businesses find their new level and they either have enough turnover and survive. Or things have changed and they close. No point in propping up zombies on one hand whilst underwriting staff wages for profitable enterprises on the other. The hotel industry have a wake up call coming - they've had their wage bill largely underwritten by the state whilst smaller accommodation providers left to fend for themselves.

The problem with Clare Byrne was the very zealous line she adopted all the way through this and each day was effectively the COVID Show. Know people who like and respect her but just abandoned her for the COVID coverage. Seeming reasonable now is an aberration on that front.

There'll be a 3-4 week grace period I'd say to give employers time to sh1t or get off the pot. That is, to make people redundant or bring them back in on full pay.

Earlier, the Tánaiste did not rule out the possibility of bars and restaurants being able to stay open beyond 8pm tonight.

However, he warned that there are still some things which have to be worked out in order to change the current regulations.

    No, there really aren't.

Looking forward to all the restriction loving nerds on twitter and elsewhere coming out with the hot takes like "even though it's not required anymore, can we still keep 2m distance in queues" etc.

Now it explains why Micheal Martin was in such positive spirits earlier in the week talking about how we're well over the omicron peak etc. He obviously was in contact with Tony that we could remove all restrictions this weekend.

Great news, I'm a bit surprised at the haste of reopening though.

Ive no doubt its being done so as Nphet and the Govt can say all their restrictions and the citizens hard work over the last 2 years has been validated, and lead to Ireland being one of the first countries in Europe to return to normal.

Disappointed that those 2 gutter reporters Gavan Reilly and Chambers get all the info leaked, they could surely get better journalists than those two bottom feeders.

Jeezus lads I can't believe it. 2 years...It's a long time when you think of it but it doesn't seem that long since it started at the same time.

There's gonna be 20 year olds going to niteclubs for the first time without social distancing or masks or anything.

    End of an era!

I think inflation and the lack of confidence in QE may be the reason that we're a lot of quick repealing of restrictions worldwide. UK, Spain, Virginia (US) etc.

The sooner we get back to real economic activity, and away from fake-stimulus, the sooner we are on a more solid economic footing. I'm sure the Irish government are hoping for a lot of consumer spending

Fcuking weirdos, every last one of them! They will be dragged kicking and screaming into the "old normal". Freaks

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,239 ✭✭✭Pussyhands

    They're following the UK.

UK are a couple weeks ahead of us, they see no point in the restrictions anymore.

Can't wait for the curtain twitchers to be tut-tutting about the queues for Coppers! 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,349 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

Actually can't believe it's finishing so abruptly. I had always assumed we would have an extended period of phased removal of restrictions. Mad stuff.

    I’m so happy I could cry! It’s been a long 2 years!

Their tut-tutting will fall on deaf ears now though, and they will fade into the obscurity from whence they came!

What will the Covid celebrities like the architect do with themselves? Their time in the spotlight is ending.

I'm going to celebrate by staying in all weekend and drinking cans because I want to, not because I have to.

    Rock and roll.

  • Registered Users Posts: 849 ✭✭✭MilkyToast

Surely not. They'd be doubting the NPHET advice and expecting the government to go against it, which by their own logic would make them conspiracy theorist right wing trolls.

Presume Phil must have a model for the coming months which they based their decision on, though oddly haven't seen any mention of it.

Because otherwise it would all be just totally making it up, but that couldn't be true.

Luke O Neill will have to move out of RTE now, he had been living there for the last 2 years.

    Media stealing all MM's thunder.

I'm hoping he's holding back on leaking the removal of mask requirements to deliver that one himself..

To be honest , I'd be ok if people kinda kept with the spacing (not mandatory mind) - It's been nice to be able stand waiting to pay in a shop etc. and not have have some foul-smelling sweaty mouth-breather standing 2 inches from my ear.

If nothing else comes of all of this if more people now understand the basic hygiene benefits and common courtesies of covering their mouths when they cough ,washing their f**king hands and not invading peoples personal spaces then that would be a bloody good thing overall.

The Government want us all to be infected with omicron to boost immunity in case a more serious strain comes along. We can't live like this any longer. We can't stay shut anymore and the best way to open is with a mild variant.

  • Registered Users Posts: 123 ✭✭anais

Pleeeeeeease can we close the windows and doors in my classroom now. We're so cold!! The only talk seems to be about hospitality, what about us?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,349 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

Probably a little bit longer until the Department issues new guidance. Teachers unions might kick off too.

More seriously, though, I'll say roughly the same as I said last time we were promised restrictions were being lifted:

The onslaught of propaganda over the last two years has been immense. Unlike anything I've seen in my lifetime and unlike anything that's ever taken place in peace time in the West. Propaganda is used because it's effective. Some people may have more resistance to it because they are generally distrustful of authority as a matter of personality, and some may have more resistance to it because they don't consume much legacy news media. But many people have been scared witless through no fault of their own, and the onus was never on them to distrust their government and media and spent inordinate amounts of time reading through reports and studies to try and get at a more accurate picture of the situation—the onus was on the government and media, and they failed and whipped up unnecessary fear.

So be gentle with people who aren't quite ready to party like it's 2019. Don't be an asshole to anyone who's wearing a mask even though they don't strictly have to. Be prepared to take it slowly with your more cautious friends. Be understanding.

Nobody feels anxiety and fear out of choice, so if you're rooting for a return to 2019 behaviours, give the people who aren't quite ready a little time, a little understanding, and a little help.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. It's not been mentioned but that doesn't mean anything. 6pm speech by Martin so you'll see then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,570 ✭✭✭irishgeo

So do you still need to wear a mask going to the toilet in the pub.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,579 ✭✭✭Downlinz

Omicron can't be contained so there's no purpose to restrictions at present, glad to see they've recognised that with an immediate removal rather than a long and pointless phasing out. I'm surprised in that regard.

Who knows what's around the corner with Covid but folks should enjoy the relatively safe times while they're here. Long may they last!

    No, of course not.

Martin is set to announce that two masks will be needed; one on the way to the toilet, and a second clean one on your return back to your table.

The issue is never the issue; the issue is always the revolution.

The Entryism process: 1) Demand access; 2) Demand accommodation; 3) Demand a seat at the table; 4) Demand to run the table; 5) Demand to run the institution; 6) Run the institution to produce more activists and policy until they run it into the ground.

Use the outside of your mask to wipe. its fine to wear so long as you dont touch that side

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,209 ✭✭✭timmyntc

great news - but the level of leaking to media in advance of an announcement these days is disappointing.

Might aswell livestream cabinet meetings at this stage
