Just wondering does it make sense to use the "start climitization" function in the BMW app before you leave in the morning to get better battery usage? Also what exactly does it do ? I've read conflicting information online.

If it's plugged in, yes. It'll heat up the cabin & as a result, defrost/demist too. You'll be setting off in a pre-warmed car from the mains electricity & not need to pull that power from the high voltage battery in the 530e.

Pre-heating doesn't do anything for the high voltage battery - it has no means of heating itself.

I thought it did "pre-condition" the battery? - This article seems to suggest it does , but perhaps that's only for BEV and not Hybrids..

On the pre-condition subject, in my experience pre heating or cooling does impact the battery range. It seems (to me) the climatisation uses the charge quicker quicker than the mains can replace it.

On another note: Had mine in for it's first NCT last week.

It passed but all the values for engine emissions were zero. Brakes and suspension and lights were all tested but not the engine.

It was fully charged going in so the engine wouldn't have come on by default, but I thought these days they controlled low/high idle test etc. via the OBD.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

    NFTs funged. No questions asked.

They have never done emissions test in hybrids.

Automatic pass it would seem apart from visual issues.

Could any owners interpret what this screen is telling me? Thanks

Over the last 10km, you averaged 83mpg. Your 7th, 8th & 9th kms are blue, ran on battery energy & then obviously exceeded the graph's limit (90mpg).

You ran initially, for the first 3kms, at 45mpg approx. (ePower). It then likely went into charge mode & charged up the battery, doubling your consumption, so dropping your mpg into the low 20s (charge mode). Then you deployed the battery & it ran in battery mode.

Another possible scenario would be you drove spiritedly, or at speed on a motorway, for the middle kms, 3 to 6.

You've also driven 123.3kms since that was reset/zeroed.

Yeah sorry about that. I suppose I should be grateful I can actually upload a picture at all on the new Boards

Thanks, just got the car at weekend so getting used to this stuff.

Is the pie chart in the corner just for 10km or 123km ? Is "epower" the regeneration energy and "Charge" energy from the grid ?

Do you know what the grey bar to the left of the mpg scale means? It seems to be level with the 90mpg mark.

The 10km covered above would've been 3 or 4 short local journeys last night, dropping kids to training etc. At the start of this 10km the battery was flat. The 3km in blue was due to the car being charged on mains for an hour or so between two of the short trips.

The 1st bar is your overall MPG performance , then the rest shows the breakdown of the journey , grey for where you used the Petrol engine and blue for eDrive.

I'm not sure on the pie chart display - My guess is that it's a breakdown of your power consumption on the Journey - Power being the Petrol Engine , ePower the Electric consumption and charge being where you've charged the battery (either Brake re-gen or "Battery Control" charging if you had the car in that mode)

Also - What model is this?

The info on the screen is similar to mine , but the layout and look is very different - Obviously an updated version of iDrive , just wondering the model and age of the car?

    Thanks. It's an M-sport, registered November 2018.

Why does the mog display top out at 90mpg? Is that the best guess at the equivalent mpg of E-drive?

I've noticed in mine that it does "blend" the Consumption numbers.

For example it tells me that I'm getting 3.3l/100km (85MPG) over the ~15k I've driven the car , but that's a blended number based on the fact that I've driven ~9k using Electric and the rest with Petrol - There's no way to see the actual consumption performance of the Petrol engine other than a real-time view for your current journey in the info from the Car or App.

If I work it out manually , I'm getting about 8.25l/100km from the ICE engine when I do use it, which is about 34MPG.

Equally though , it tells me that my KWh consumption is 11.5kwh/100km which it isn't really either. It's more like double that , even allowing for regen distance etc. so again it would seem that it's using the total distance travelled and simply dividing that by the energy consumption instead of splitting it out.

    Hi,

Any recommendations on extending the warranty

Just got a quote for a year warranty as the car is over 3 years old in February

    €920 with no excess

    €759 with €135 excess

    €574 with €335 excess

    Also, €90 for breakdown excess

Its quite pricey, but I am considering it for peace of mind, I have a pre warranty check booked in this month

    Car has 31k mileage

    Paul

I'm on my second year of extended warranty on my 330e, i went with Comprehensive for 315 with 335 excess. Its a no brainer really, i imagine it can get costly if anything goes wrong.

is that via a dealer or something like car protect?

Can anyone tell me as I am really interested in this car.

If I fully charge this and leave Cork and drive to Dublin, what's the trip likely to cost me in petrol roughly one way?

I have absolutely no previous experience of electric cars

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 17,416 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quin_Dub

Electric range is ~40kms on a full charge , a full fill of Petrol is ~40l (so roughly €70 at 1.71/1.72 a litre) which will get you about 450/500kms depending on your driving. It's a fairly powerful petrol engine so it's not exactly super frugal especially if you push on a bit.

I live in Clare and my Parents live in Wicklow - A round trip to them is a full tank of Petrol for me , I'd reckon a Cork/Dublin round trip would be pretty similar but outside of those longer journeys I barely use any petrol.

The value/savings of a PHEV isn't really for longer drives, it's for the shorter day to day stuff.

For example , I last filled my car on the 2nd of January (having visited my parents!) , I've driven ~600kms since then and still have a three quarters of a tank of fuel left. Almost all of my daily driving is Electric only as it's less than the ~40kms range and a charge overnight on night-rate costs me about a euro.

I've had my car for 8 or 9 months and about 60% of my total mileage so far has been Electric. At a rough calculation I've saved about 30/35% on my fuel costs compared to my previous diesel Volvo S80.

Thanks nfor that, and using a granny cable into the wall midday to charge.. any idea of cost to charge to full?

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 17,416 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quin_Dub

Cost will depend on the rates you have for Electricity. For me my day rate is 18c per unit and 9c at night.

A full charge is about 12 units - so a day time charge costs me about €2 and night time one about half that.

I'm wondering if any other G30 530e owners have seen this issue before.. In the last few days I have gotten a warning on the dash saying emergency call system not available. Now today in addition to this tofay the sat nav isn't showing the correct location and the mic on the Bluetooth isn't working either. I have read on other forums that the tcb battery may have failed or (more worryingly) the whole TCU unit may have failed given I have gotten all 3 issues rather than just the Emergency call failure. Has anyone else experience this? The car is 2018 and has less than 60k km on the clock and hasn't been modified or wrapped.

Hi folks, I’m a long term diesel driver and I’m very tempted to move to a 530e this year.

    2 questions;

Is there a later version with slightly better electric range and when was this introduced?

Is it possible to get a Towbar fitted to a 530e? I regularly tow a small boat and I also use a bike rack. A retractable one would be preferable

A later version with 12kwh battery pack was introduced post-July 2019, so 192 plates should have upgraded batteries. I have 12kwh one and get around 35km range in winter and over 40km in summer. Heating reduces range significantly along with a heavy foot.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 17,416 Mod ✭✭✭✭Quin_Dub

There are "some" 192 plates that are the older version.

Quick way to tell in an advert is by looking at the photos of the dashboard.

If the instrument cluster looks like this

    i6 dash.JPG

It's the older iDrive version 6 based model which has the 9kw/h battery

If the cluster looks like this

    i7 dash.JPG

Then it's the newer iDrive version 7 model which has the larger battery, plus a few other minor tweaks,

    Great info, thanks.

Has anyone got a retrofit retractable towbar fitted?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,999 ✭✭✭✭mickdw

I don't think they are approved for towing at all.

My GPS hasn't been showing correct location for some weeks now. When I don't have a connection to Connected Drive (e.g. the Weather app won't load), my GPS is not working. When I go into the Service menu it says GPS is Reserved. I don't get any error messages displayed though. If you ring BMW they'll bring you in for a software update before they look at anything else.

Is yours an LCI model because I usually don't see more than ~25km range on the dash even though the official range is meant to be 40.
