I'm not debating civil liberties and I see the current restrictions as pretty bonkers out of historical context.

It seems completely unfair to huge swathes of society. What I'm saying is there is a high percentage of our society much better off in restrictions. That's how **** things were up to 2020.

It's like Putin, authoritarian and anti LGBT. I wouldn't want him leading our country but for the average Russian he's probably doing a great. Things are much better under him than USSR/ Yeltsin..

For a lot of Irish, they have less restrictions under restrictions.

This is from London as of today, which is a couple of weeks ahead of us in Omnicron. I'd love if someone showed it, and the footage of thousands of people partying in nightclubs in London for NYE and for the last month, to our government next week when they're deciding on what extra restrictions they'll no doubt be bringing in "because we have to".

Its mind boggling that they're living life largely as normal while we're locked down and theres no difference in our numbers, yet our government continues with this madness.

Some queue to get into Depot mayfield in Manchester last night from the look of things. Look at the state of them, no social distancing and not a mask in sight.

Bunch of nutcases over there they are. Shocking stuff !

Do you not think they’ve seen what’s going on in the UK?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,289 ✭✭✭Blut2

The fact that England has been fully open since mid-July, whereas we only got 3 weeks of half reopening in Nov, would suggest otherwise. If our government were actually observing the UK then they'd have seen England's hospitals aren't overwhelmed, society is functioning despite their not locking down. And we'd follow suit, given the virus is no different here than there.

Of course they have, but they'll choose to ignore it, because covid.

Very naive to think our government are not watching what’s going on with our nearest neighbours.

Wow. Irish revisionism at its finest. You might want to talk to some of the young girls who were abused in these homes and kept as slaves. They might disagree. A real shameful post.

I think most people can handle the pubs or clubs closing at 8 for the first few weeks of January. It'll be the schools and working environments that people will be concerned about. I dont think they will touch them though at this stage. Omicron is a blessing but this pandemic is following the course of previous pandemics. Burning itself with a weaker version. I'll also be surprised if the booster vaccine for the 16-40's has a huge take up. Its just not needed. Political point scoring at play no doubt.

You read my post out of context and inferred the exact opposite of what was intended. I was highlighting the fact that the priests didn’t use laws or force but rather coercive control over a population who allowed them.

He was giving advice. Not ordering and as far as I knows that's what his job mandates i.e advice

Ah come on. No it's not. The poster is obviously making the point that the priests didn't need to have the authority to throw "fallen women" into the laundries, because their influence over the public meant the public would do the throwing for them. Just like Tony Holohan, having the influential position he currently does, need only tweet about or leak some "advice" or a "concern" and notice will be taken, tongues will be clucked, and, sometimes, guards will be mobilised.

I know you're a pedant but you are the person who said anything about "ordering" the guards. The other poster said he tweeted about SWS in order to influence the guards' top brass to put the kibosh on.

Richard didn't say anything about "ordering". You're confusing his post with Penfailed's.

People queueing to get into a large venue on New Year's Eve is the least shocking thing I've ever heard.

    Give your head a wobble.

Thank you but do you have links to the data? From the graph It looks to me almost no winter peaks pre Covid and that does not seem likely.

Also, it pretty clear we have far less people ending up from Covid in ICUs let alone dying from it..

You’ve been in this thread since pretty much the start screeching about “the rules” and how we must all follow them to the letter of the law and in the post I quoted you said you haven’t been following all the rules. Hypocrite.

But the government did use laws to close the pubs?

This is what was said - "Nope. His job is to advise. He has gone well beyond his remit over the last 2 years. Put us under defacto house arrest, had the riot police deployed and unnecessarily destroyed the hospitality sector." So...no, he didn't have the riot police deployed. That's a fact.

my 10 year old daughter got covid then 6 days later I got it . My 10 days isolation is up 2moro but now today my 14 yr old got a positive antigen. can’t get PCR!

Do my daughter and I have to isolate for another 10 days?

my husband has had negative antigen s so far

    thanks

Yeah...no. Not once. Never. I've never told anyone, nevermind 'screeching', that we all must follow the rules to the letter of the law. Quite often, I would've defended the rules and why they were in place but I've never told people to follow them. In fact, I've actually told people to have some common sense. That poster who lived 6 or 7km from the beach but because it was outside the 5km wouldn't travel there for a walk, I said they should just go for their walk. That's just one example.

Once you're not black and white around here and picked a side and defended it to the hilt, it gets confusing for them. It's kind of funny.
