Good to see that the Blanch unit is (hopefully) up and running.

One quick logistical question: if there are only 3 parking bays, how can 4 cars charge at once? (does everyone have to bunch in and have the chargers in the right position?)

Apologies if it's something simple, but I just can't picture it.

Does the bigger unit allow to cars to charge at once?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 612 ✭✭✭handpref

If I was in need of a charge it’s probably the one I’d want to avoid most- after Cashel !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,797 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

yes, but the CCS side will reduce to 75kW if a car plugs into the CHAdeMO, regardless of what it pulls..

I added an entry here on plugshare app

apparently they were to be Dublin smart cities but site given to esb ecars this year.

Here is back round to story

This is eCars logic. Anyone can park in any pf those spaces and plug into AC and leave there for hours on end, so if they park in either of the spots at the 150kW unit, it's effectively down to a single space DC charger.

Either put in a 4th spot, or lose the AC altogether... it's not like theres a lack of AC chargers around there...

I don't think so. These units lock the plug in place (as far as I know), so i'd assume they lock out the other plug from being released. Different software too, so likely overcome that glitch.

EDIT: Nevermind, I thought it was a circontrol raption 50 unit they put in. These one could very well have the same glitch whereby CHAdeMO can knock off CCS charging

I don't know about that, the photo upthread shows an old triple head unit with the new colours going in, haven't driven by there to confirm yet because if it was a newer one I would like to try it out to see if I can add it to my collection of new units I can't charge at

Why Cashel? It's not half as busy as blanch, lucan, Frankfield, Templeville. And it's got 4 ionity units to plug into if needs be.

  • Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 11,715 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

Looks like the old triple head unit, but it's not 43kW AC. Just 22kW.

Ionity cashel is often ICEd, including the esb charger. At the ionity chargers often people are in their car so you can typically hassle one to move, but I would not like to rely on it. The esb charger is right at McDonald's, so if I was relying on ChaDeMo, I would be worried it would be blocked as it normally is. In general that petrol station is crazy busy with zero parking spaces at peak times. It's not really an official motorway services so it does not have the usual truck and car spaces. Macdonald's mean people stay longer, and it gets busier.

I've heard all that a lot, but I can't say I ever experienced it. Think I seen someone parked in the ESB space once, but they didn't leave their car, and left after a few minutes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,014 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

have gone to cashel to use ionity 4 times and never had an issue personally.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 612 ✭✭✭handpref

I can only go by my own experience, last run I did both chargers in Portlaoise services were occupied with another car waiting - pushed onto Cashel, traffic backed up to the main road outside. Cars queuing for McDonald’s balls it up even more. Leaf and ice car at ESB charger - IONITY have 4 chargers and two were ice’d. Two Id4’s waiting and an etron.

Kids we’re bouncing around the car and the toilets were out of action -

It may normally be a pleasure to stop there but not on my last two occasions.

Others may find quite the opposite, that’s just how it’s been for me.

Odd there is so few taxi charging stations. I was thinking of Heuston station when I asked my question. I think there is supposed to be one there but I've haven't seen it. There should be a 'few' more charging stations. The NTA issued grants for approx 750 EV taxis this year and I believe they have funding for similar for the next two years. Not all of them are going to live in houses with driveways and suitable wiring!

Feb 2020: NTA taxi industry newsletter

The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has secured €1.5 million to install fast chargers specifically for the SPSV Industry. While the locations for these chargers are yet to be confirmed it is expected they will be installed near transport hubs.

July 2021: Dail debate (Eamon Ryan, Minister for Transport):

Last year, my Department funded installation of SPSV-dedicated EV charging infrastructure at Dublin and Cork airports, as well as at Heuston, Kent and Colbert train stations. My Department is supporting further installations for SPSV charging at key transport hubs in 2021, with an allocation of €3 million earmarked for that purpose.

Completely agree. I was in Cashel in August and it was chocka. I picked up a charge off the ESB charger (I'm limited in charge-rate anyway as I have the older Kona with 75kW max) but it was the amount of traffic and vehicular movements which were happening around me which made it feel unsafe.

That charger needs to be torn out and replaced with a HPC at least 150m away, preferably where it at least feels safe to exit the car. That would give Ionity a run for their money at least.

...and don't get me started about the view.

  • Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 11,715 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

Dunno. Given the "view" I'd feel safer charging at the current ESB location at night rather than ionity

I checked plugsurfing and it seems that the taxi only at Heuston are operational.

    image.png image.png

Check with google maps and it seems they are just beside the ecars one.

@ innrain Thanks! Jeez, another app to download :)

Can't see any taxi chargers inside Heuston on my (no filter) Ecars app. Must do some more research on that. Thanks for your help.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 429 ✭✭Dubwat

OK, the ecars app is showing me the 2 public charging stations in Heuston. Strange though, of the 6 apps* on my phone, only the plugsurfing one seems to show the taxi-only ones in Heuston.

Checked out Carnmore this evening, it is indeed a 150kw HPC and a new 50kw triple head with the ac socket. Pic below.

No power to the units but ground works look done.

    image.jpeg

I passed by the N17 plaza in Tuam today and it does indeed appear to have two HPC units. They appear to be the type with two connectors on each side. Didn’t get any pics of those.

  • Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 11,715 ✭✭✭✭Black_Knight

Here's hoping those become the standard, at least as these 2 unit "hubs".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,797 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

So Tuam will be the first ‘Tier 2’ ‘hub’…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,995 ✭✭✭McGiver

I'm going to check it out today.

Why they didn't keep the old Efacec in place at the back? They've three spots there.

Removing one charger, throwing it away, then creating a new spot few meters away is dim. Could've been a proper hub with 3 chargers. Taxpayers' money wasted again...

Can the new triple head charge Chademo + CSS at the same time?

Will the CCS:Chademo ratio be 1:1 on both new chargers?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,995 ✭✭✭McGiver

I told them what I think, might not be pleasant for the receiver...😀

    Briefly:

    1. Taxpayers' money wasted. Not a good ROI overall.
    2. Only 120 DC units in the whole country. Similarly sized or smaller countries including Eastern Europe have multiple of that now.
    3. Abysmal DC unit growth in last 24 months - 25% at best. Similarly sized or smaller countries including Eastern Europe grew multiples of that (100%+).
    4. EV:FCP ratio rising, too high. Not in line with expected EV sales and Gov strategy of 1M EVs in just 8 years.
    5. Wrong parking layout on all (U)FCP locations preventing multiple cars charging. Will get worse with multiple (U)FCP locations coming online if not fixed.
    6. Only 1 FCP at 90% of locations, no back-up.
    7. AC43 should be reviewed and converted to CCS or whatever.
    8. Incorrect and too low ratio of CCS:Chademo connectors on (U)FCPs

    Else all is grand 😎

    Just to clarify.

Chademo is indeed an Asian standard. The Japanese created it and push it, the Chinese joined Chademo 3.0 in 2018 and Chademo will become de facto Asian standard.

In August 2018, CHAdeMO Association announced they were co-developing the next-generation ultra-high-power protocol, named CHAdeMO 3.0, with China Electricity Council (CEC),[32] which will harmonise the CHAdeMO standard with the CEC GB/T 20234.3 standard

CCS is an EU standard EN 62196 and is supported by the EU as well as directed to be used in European Charging Network.

    L_2014307EN.01000101.xml (europa.eu)

High power recharging points for motor vehicles

Direct current (DC) high power recharging points for electric vehicles shall be equipped, for interoperability purposes, at least with connectors of the combined charging system ‘Combo 2’ as described in standard EN 62196-3.

CCS is the EU standard and only matter of time when Chademo is removed from the EU market.

I was at Cashel once. Fatally hazardous ESB charger placement.

Went for Ionity in the end. Won't risk my life because of few € saved...

Damn it. On the way to Killarney & just checked ecars app & css is offline.

    Will it charge offline?

The Glebe 22kw is blue & says 0 availabile to charge but when I click into it it says available to charge?

It's been offline most the week according to https://ecars-stats.com/

you're out of luck I'm afraid
