Anyone get a "free" charger as part of a new car deal - but already have a charger?

I got the SEAI grant previously to install a charger point but have now purchased a new Kia that comes with a "free" charger. AFAIK the car maker pays for the charger and Energia cover any costs in excess of the grant.

Anyone know how this will work? Obviously I won't get the grant again but all wiring etc is in place so it should only take about 30 mins to swap out the CP.

Edit: just did a quick calculation, the "free" charger will cost about €800 in extra electricity costs over 12 months. This is before any complications with the grant etc.

    Hi,

Quick question that someone may be able to answer concerning the SEAI grant......the SEAI website says you can't proceed with the works until they have issued the offer letter it also mentions needing an application ID from the dealer. In people's experience for buying a new car where the VIN/reg no is unknown can the dealer issue the ID easily enough? I'm pretty much convinced to go tethered, the installation can, I think, happen down the side of the house so not as much of an issue with visual clutter. I won't have the money to go for a top end charger (like the Anderson one referenced in previous pages) - can anyone recommend a mid price unit? Considering either the Hypervolt or EO Mini.

Any help would be much appreciated.

That information on the Seai site I found confusing as well. You don't need anything from the dealership when you go to complete the actual form. Turn around for the letter was like a day, and is only valid for six months. If you're unsure about when you're going to get a car, maybe hold off as some dealerships are quoting 4 to 5 months lead time on new model EVs.

Thanks for the reply - I didn't go through the process so I'll maybe try it now, you'd think if no info was required they'd make that clear on their website. I should be taking delivery in Jan/Feb so might get cracking now. If anyone has a recomendation for a tethered mid price charger I'd appreciate it.

Anderson does look class but are you really going to stand there twice a day putting a manky wet cable away ?

only if you have a plug in hybrid or do massive mileage! i charge once a week personally.

    Fair enough,

I plug mine in every weekday for the pre heating.

you can preheat without having it plugged in though right?

Don't think I'd have the funds for one of those....around €700-€800 is my level. Considering the EO Mini, Hypervolt or Zappi but leaning towards the Hypervolt/Zappi as they look neater for the tethered. If someone has personal experience of either that would be helpful.

I watched a lot of these chaps in the UK, they have installed a large number of EV chargers. Not a customer's perspective but maybe a more professional one? You also get to see what it might look like in a more real setting. Theyre not sponsored by the EV chargers so it's a fairly honest opinion. Their video on the hypervolt sold it really well and the nerd in me was very attracted to the mini computer in it.

I went with the Hypervolt and am very impressed with it. Very neat and app works really well. Plus if there are any issues, their support team are brilliant

Hi, my charger seems to be broken, any recommendations on who to call (I'm based in Macroom)? I contacted Nigel Daly but call out fee alone is €125 (it seems a bit expensive...)?

    Update on this.

Finally got the cert details but got the impression SEAI were being overly punctilious. Said I didn't have MPRN number on one of the documents (I did). Also said my bank details were incorrect (they weren't).

Delighted with the ABB charger. Has some super features.

Could you send me details of your installer?

We had to send KN away and give up on our ‘free’ install from Nissan/electric Ireland. They flat out refuse to come from meter box now, even though installer himself said he wouldn’t allow anyone to do to his house what they wanted to do to mine. New extra surface mounted consumer unit (beside our very neat recessed one) then external conduit from middle of house through too walls and out above front door was their solution, would look like a 60s bedsit bodge job.

our install is exactly the reason the new clarifications were brought out so more than a bit annoying for us.

If you can send on the installer to me that'd be appreciated thanks!

On the Anderson, is the look not ruined by the isolation switch installed beside it if off the meter box?

edit, sorry read back a bit shouldn’t have mentioned the war! Can you pm your installer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭Manion

What Isolation switch ;) lol. Sure thing.

In other news, I had ESBN out today to swap over to a Day/Night meter. Turns out these my Digital meter always supported day/night. No messy rip out required. Happy days.

Great unit, we have the 7.4kw at home wih the load management meter and a 3 phase one at work. Do you use the charger scheduler or the cars? Yet to try it, using the cars when required. I can connect with the bluetooth to the charger from living room, so just start the charge that way as well which is useful. Its worth keeping the firmware up to date especially if its connected to a back-end via SIM.

Any installed pics, looking at buying this and finding separate installer. Is this how you did it? Any details of installer could you pm?

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,745 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

Did you also use a superset installer from supplier? Could you send on details?

Here's mine. I hadn't known about the interrupter requirement before the installation started but, given that it is a requirement (and given that the only workable install location is at the front of my house), I'm pretty happy with the way this looks. Nice that the colour scheme of the interrupter is close enough to that of the EO.

After many phone calls KN are sending out a technician to investigate why my Eo has gone off line, they offered me the 13th but I'm away so it'll have to be the 20th hopefully he'll get it sorted.

Mine has never been online. The installer never set it up for us and I haven’t been able to do it myself. I assumed it would be fairly straightforward but I’m having no joy
