    Do vaccines work?

They reduce severe disease dramatically, give people long lasting protection with B and T-Cell memory, provide high levels of antibodies post vaccination that takes a relatively long time (~1 year) to wane completely (as happens with other coronavirus antibodies), reduce the chances of being infected, reduce the chances of passing on the virus if infected and clear the infection faster than if you hadn't had a vaccine, if a booster is taken, antibody levels return to the previous very high level, they remove the n in novel Coronavirus for everyone who gets vaccinated.

    So, do they work?

That costa worker, obeying the law... Terrible isn't it?

I'd wonder about a business not following the law, what other laws and rules are they breaking or not following?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,132 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

That is not all he says according to the article.

Both Dr Ryan and Prof Mills agreed that both booster doses for vulnerable people in vaccinated populations and immunising unvaccinated countries could be done together.

The bit you highlight has nothing to do with what I said or what the person I responded to said but I'm happy the link I provided allowed you to read the article.

Well I meant not as fatal to as many people, but you do you, I proclaim that some people only half died so my sentence is now correct. Deflect away!

So it's your opinion. I hope you're right, but without a statement from NPHET or the government to that effect then there are no grounds for believing that normal life will resume in Ireland in spring, if ever it resumes.

The fact that you omitted it suggests that he has a very different position via the comment you chose.

People jaywalk every day, people park on double yellow lines every day when it's illegal to do so. Lots of laws are broken every day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,038 ✭✭✭Penfailed

I would prefer if businesses didn't have that particular law in place. I'm not asking for anyone to break the law. I don't want to make the hospital situation worse. People (vaccinated and unvaccinated) are already mixing in all sorts of environments. With such a high percentage vaccinated and an unknown percentage above that which have recovered at this stage, the certs are a waste of time.

Yes that is correct... Not sure of the relevance to my comment though

I quoted the second part of what he said so as not to be accused of selectively omitting his position in respect of the need for boosters. You appear to be defending his honour, by highlighting that he also said a booster campaign can be carried out while vaccination efforts proceed in other parts of the world so that the two are not exclusive to each other, and he referred to boosters for "vulnerable people" here.

However, no one including me has suggested he said anything to the contrary.

You just havn't followed the conversation properly that's all.

Have you ever driven above the speed limit? You should climb down from your high horse there lad.

I still don't get why centra got the hard earned money... my understanding is we can't sit in centra and eat pecan slices either. Not in the ones I've seen anyway.... or what am I missing? Is it that costa won't serve take away to people without certs ?

Are you just as upset about those laws being broken as you are about the cert law being broken?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,038 ✭✭✭Penfailed

Likewise, there are no grounds for NOT believing that normal life will resume.

While you got the usual thanks brigade (hey floorpie) about half of those in ICU from COVID today are unvaccinated, as more get vaxxed (and we'll probably see the remaining vulnerable holdouts go first) the number of vaxxed in ICU as a % will increase, but until it's 90/10 then all it will show is that vaccines work.

Pregnant women should get vaccinated, simple as, the risk of SARS-COV2 to a pregnant woman is very high, the risk/reward for vaccines is highly in favor of vaccines for pregnant women, it is a complete no-brainer, pregnant women routinely get vaccines and will often be the first that year to get flu vaccines. Any comments otherwise is dangerous misinformation from as*holes (a few were pushing this agenda on the pregnancy person, those people are absolute filth).

So you want the cert gone (legally) and our hospitals to not be overwhelmed? And you think that's possible considering most of those in our hospitals are unvaccinated?

I mean sure we could remove the cert and the resultant is that our hospital numbers could decrease but I don't see how

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,038 ✭✭✭Penfailed

Yes, I think that's possible. The numbers won't decrease just the same way they don't decrease every year at this time.

There won't be a statement, there can't be because it will inevitably be proved wrong, there can be a plan and models but that's about it (and the plan probably won't be released till the effect of the latest restriction relaxing has been baked in. You're in the middle of a pandemic, you can't proclaim that anything will be permanent (hybrid working probably will be) until the pandemic is over, so either you believe the pandemic will last forever and explain why or that if we were in 2018 that restrictions would be in place for some reason.

So why not all of it? Sorry, really no idea whatsoever where this honour nonsense comes from and you've formed all sorts of bizarre conclusions about another poster from very scant data. Anyway moving on from this.

No, not particularly, then again those laws being broken have never resulted the spread of a virus that caused lockdowns not so long ago so I suppose like many others I would consider some laws to be more important than others

I think the cert legislation covers indoor hospitality only so it shouldn't be looked for when ordering a takeaway coffee

I'm guess the OP got a takeaway coffee at Centra but wanted to sit in Costa but had to make a big deal of it

Ah, it must not be a conspiracy theory because its on twitter 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 434 ✭✭Vital Transformation

It's for sit ins only I believe. I was there today, reluctantly went through with it today but I won't again, especially since I know that other coffee chains aren't asking for certs. Had to give my phone number as well, it's a bit much, in hindsight I should have given a fake number.

Sept 27: Covid-19: Close contact rules for children under 13 relaxed

Oct 27th: State chief medical officer Tony Holohan said the virus incidence is now “increasing at a concerning rate. The seven-day moving average is now 2,043, up from 1,138 only three weeks ago. Incidence is increasing across all age groups, highest in those aged five to 12 years. A combination of higher levels of social contact, a move to socialisation indoors and a collective relaxing of basic public health behaviours combined has led to this surge of infection."

Yep. It's obviously all those 5-12 year olds heading out to pubs and Coppers. Clearly absolutely nothing to do with schools. Again.

It isn't. It's a video that's on their page. But we're not allowed to discuss it because some posters reported posts they didn't like. We're back to talking about restrictions that haven't been lifted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 726 ✭✭✭SupplyandDemandZone

Who said it's terrible. I just took my business elsewhere. No biggie tbh.

Virus didn't cause any lockdowns. Lockdowns were a political decision.
