What's the point of wheeling out Holohan every second day?

Fair enough it may have been necessary in March/April 2020, but at this stage all it's doing is pissing most people off.

When you say you're concerned 50 different times the word eventually loses all meaning.

Because these guys are so fcuking stupid that they actually believe the country is still in thrall to them. They still believe we hang on his every word. That’s how disconnected from reality these people are.

Seems most in this thread hang on his every word.

Every time he says anything there is an outburst of posts in response.

I`ll say one thing for these threads. The amount of gymnastics some go through attempting to pass a post off as logic never fails to amaze me.

You talk about logic and a control country to compare your logic too, then by this "logic" compare it to a country it has little in common with while ignoring it`s immediate neighbours does not hold much logic.

On those aged 65 and over : Sweden 20.1%. Finland 22.6%. Norway 17.5% Denmark 20.2%. Sweden Covid deaths adjusted for population 7 times greater than Finland, 8.7 times greater than Norway, 3.12 times greater than Denmark.

On excess deaths : During the peak periods of Covid April May and June 2020 and November 2020 December 2020 & January 2021.

    Sweden April May and June. excess deaths +38.2%. +23.9%. +10.7%. Finland +8.1%, +5.6%. +5.7%. Norway +2.8%, -3.1%, -1.6%. Denmark +6.4%, -0.9%, +0.8%

    Sweden Nov, Dec and Jan. +10.7%, +24.4% +17.5%. Finland. +6.1%, +4.1%, -1.8%. Norway. +0.6%, -2.3%, -5.5% Denmark. +5.5%, +10.6% +10.8%.

Sweden`s excess deaths 2020 10.54%. I could possibly work out the the excess deaths for the other three (or indeed if there actually were any), but logically from the figures above none are going to be anywhere near Sweden`s percentage of excess deaths.

What was it you said about logic again. Something along the lines of no matter how much someone can show correlation between results then if there is one single contradiction then the entire premise is false was it not ? Well from those statistics on over 65`s, differences in deaths and in excess deaths then it looks like your premise has fallen apart on three fronts.

This has all already been done to death on other threads, but giving you the benefit of the doubt for having to go through it again, you may not have know that. There are others though I notice who pointed to your post as being some kind of unknown reveal that do know better.

Given that the clowns making the rules don't understand how late night life works, I wouldn't rule out your example as being given a credible thought.

Your mixing up 2 pieces of legislation.

This is the vaccine passport for indoor hospitality legislation that you've linked. That's now set to expire on 9th January. It can be extended through the house.

The emergency powers given to minister under the health act have already been extended once to the 9th February and can't be extended again automatically. New legislation would be required to pass through both houses as the sunset clause allowed one extension which has already been used.

Good post I'll give you that. I'll have to look into it deeper and check out what you are saying.

What do you think the differences are between the nordic countries and us and the UK?

How come they performed so much better.

Why the huge difference if lockdowns were to work. Why didn't they work for us? 🤔

It is against the charter to engage on conspiracy theories in this forum so the only place people can engage (or post CT in the first place) is on the CT forum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 307 ✭✭watchingfromafar

Okay so passes to expire on Jan 9th.

Other restrictions masks etc until February 9th?

Hard to search on my phone for these do you have a link to the other legislations?

9th Jan yeah but like I say the legislation can be extended.

9th Feb for current emergency powers that allow the Minister to bring in measures through cabinet and not via full Dail vote.

That legislation has a sunset clause, any sort of extension there, for example targeted at just masks for example would still require new legislation and to go through the full process in both houses.

The SI related to covid are here, bit of a mountain to get through with each amendment etc, best I can do on the phone until I'm at the laptop

Looks like the UK may be giving up mass testing in January. I think that's our only way out of this, when mass testing ends and people can't obsess about irrelevant numbers.

I'm also worried, it's been 22 months since this virus was first reported and our health service is struggling with a little over 500 people in the system with said virus... It's like we never learn

Worth noting though that at it's peak in the first wave we had about 800 in our hospitals

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,370 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

The mass testing is a joke at this stage. Clearly the virus is being let rip.

Yep with our socialising and not paying attention. The HSE are/we're flat out trying to find solutions, no way is it there fault

Tony will be out to give us a lecture

I blame myself, need to stop looking on the bright side of everything

I never thought I’d say anything like this, but I feel this ticketing business is very sinister. To me, it’s about a lot more than general contact tracing. It seems like it’s the government’s way of judging those going to a nightclub, very nanny state way of running things. I’d understand it if it was possible to get a ticket five, ten minutes in advance, but the one hour rule is a joke. Also, the vast vast majority of nightclub queues are outside, so how does that compare to all the queues to supermarkets earlier in the pandemic? I suppose we should bring in ticketing for Lidl too.

Is increasingly worried either below or above deeply concerned? I can't really follow Tony's anxiety levels anymore, NPHET should really publish a level system for that so we know where we stand.

Check all you like. All those stats are easily found and the calculation are just basic mathematics.

You asked for examples of deaths being multiple times greater in a country that did not use lockdown compared to one that did. I have given you an example of 3 which used lockdown compared to their neighbour who did not, where the percentage of those 65 and older was no different where deaths were multiple times greater I have even shown you the disparity in excess deaths during Covid peak times. Whether you want to accept that or not that those statistics show that the deaths are much greater for the one neighbour which did not use lockdown when compared to the three that did, then that is up to you. But to use your own term, it would defy logic not to.

Why do you keep harping on about Ireland and the U.K in relation to Nordic countries that are neighbours in relation to lockdown ? The statistics clearly show the difference between those Nordic neighbours where lockdown was used and where it was not. If you want to make comparisons to us and our neighbour the U.K. then U.K. deaths adjusted for population are twice ours, where the U.K. similar to Sweden, originally played around with chasing herd immunity and only began to take lockdown seriously when Boris Johnston caught Covid.

So this ticketing system "should" see the elimination of queues apparently..

    How exactly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭Stormyteacup

The difference is reaction in very early stages. You lockdown hard and quickly - most importantly restricting international travel - and you drastically minimise ‘seeding’ effect.

Countries that had more warning (north) and also shut borders early fared better.

Outside of that, domestic restrictions had little impact relatively- they were necessary to prevent healthcare system collapse - but only served to delay spread ultimately.

That accounts for the difference in Nordic countries outcomes, even as it suits people to say Swedes are distanced and don’t care about their elderly as much as other countries do. They didn’t get as much wrong as some like to claim.

Lockdowns worked..sort of. I wonder what would have happenened if the virus had taken off in say the USA or France first. This example of tolalitarism lockdown would not have been tolerated in the west. China doing it first sort of forced our democratic countries into following their model.

Yep there trying to change the drinking culture here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 962 ✭✭✭Burty330

What happens if you're in a late bar and decide you want to go to another late bar? Tough luck? Will everybody after 11:30 be held hostage to one venue. Won't the processing of tickets at the door cause a line outside? wtf is this nonsense!? This government is treating us like children in a boarding school. I hope publicans completely reject it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,831 ✭✭✭Healio

Both SI's only extended to Nov 9th; seems a bit strange to put the nightclubs/late bars through all that for 2 weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,105 ✭✭✭prunudo

Is there anybody bar the government who actually think the ticketing is a good idea. From what I can see everyone for once is on the same page regarding its idiocy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,542 ✭✭✭techdiver

Can't imagine there is. The have made some half assed baffling decisions over the last 18 months or so but this one is ridiculousness in its purest form.

The more I see and hear from this government the more I'm convinced they are up there with the most incompetent government in the history of the nation and that's saying something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,459 ✭✭✭bikeman1

The nanny state is in full swing as usual and Covid is the best opportunity to bring in stupid rules to control the public and curb drinking.

Follow the science, 1 hour doesn’t follow any science. Neither did 24 hours.

The queues will remain, how the hell to you check everyone with the golden tickets into the venue with ID and actual Covid certs along with the intoxication level of patrons.

Queues are pretty much always outside, for which no restrictions are in place and we know to be relatively safe. But why is that the be all, when 10 minutes later everyone is inside, dancing, hugging, kissing, shouting, singing and laughing all inside and on top of each other.

I was out last Saturday night in Dublin, it was 2019 again with the only exception being the staff wearing masks. 3 deep at the bar, no masks, chatting with random people. It was great fun.

I know where my worry o meter is. In the bin, where NPHET should go.

    It is farcical.

    Incredible to watch.

The country needed a bit of a laugh, to be fair.
