how old are the wheels? i.e. are they still covered by a warranty?

because breaking three spokes on a wheel in that space of time is not right.

Nah, they'd be a few years old & im not the first owner! Have it almost a year myself.

Between the pedals & the tyres/tubes I've paid a bike shop €120 on this bike so far so I won't change them now as I'll literally be throwing money down the drain. If nothing else though this has taught me to avoid this particular bike shop - as you say the tyres are too wide yet they fitted them and they never noticed the bottom bracket was worn.

Regarding the hybrid - I tried several times over the years I've had it and it just never jelled with me. Friends loaned me more comfortable saddles and I spent a week once cycling on one of the good cycle paths around cork to try and get to like it and I never did - that's why it has sat in a shed for so long!

When these come to be changed I'll look into those, thank you

Did you ever get those bolts out of the bottle cage?

    they/them/theirs

Not exactly a maintenance question but should I swap the cages around ? Or go with 2 the same. Cannot decide which is more aesthetically pleasing. I have 2 celeste vico carbons and 1 black/celeste vico carbon.

    Currently

It's not normally the sort of thing that would bother me either way, but I'd agree, matching looks best

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,972 ✭✭✭Flaccus

I was kinda going for a juxtapositioning of celeste and black, with the black cage on the inverse celeste downtube (black), making the celeste Bianchi logo pop. By default that logo is black. Oh well. Matching is probably best :)

I'm with you on opposites here. Normally I'd say matching but opposites will work really well there I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,972 ✭✭✭Flaccus

Thanks I feel that way as well. Do you think I should swap the cages or keep them as are - celeste cage on celeste seat tube and black cage on black down tube. I guess I will take a full size pick tomorrow with 2 different combos and eyeball them against matching.

Black cage on the seat tube and celeste on the down tube is my thinking. If it looks bad you've lost nothing but a few turns of an allen key.

    wrong thread

I like the opposite, celeste on black and vice versa. Black cage on the seat tube breaks up the Celeste but the scheme still matches.

Love the bar tape, was thinking of getting one that has colour on the drops and had my eye on a celeste style but don't think it would go with a grey frame!

That's a seriously nice looking bike!

Thanks DaveyDave. I will try your suggestion (and Enfilade's) tomorrow. The bar tape is a major pita to put on. Almost zero stretch.

I know. But it was the fastest way to get an opinion as it's a fairly active thread. And I guess changing a bottle cage is technically maintenance as it would ideally require putting some anti-seize on the bolts :) Weirdly, the bianchi bolts that came with the bike are titanium and take a t25 torx

Replace the guide under the bottom bracket with a wider one, which will move the cable out further. In fact the screw holding it on there doesn't look original and it might be possible that some one replaced the original with one that was too narrow.

Ha no sorry I posted something in this thread by accident!

Although technically I suppose we both should have posted in a general cycling thread if it existed!

Ah, I get what you were doing all right, and if you just explained it to me, I would've said go with the opposites, but looking at the two pictures, I like the two light blue (Celeste?) cages.

Maybe a full frame picture of the other setup would serve as a better comparison.

Thing is though, asking the question on here is like flicking a coin. Heads for matching, tails for opposite. If one comes up and you feel like flicking the coin again, then you have your answer 😃

Here you go. I still cannot decide. Most I have asked have said Pic 1 looks best. I am tied between 1. and 2. LOL.

Tomorrow I get the first 2 spacers removed and the steerer cut. Seat post can't go higher as only 29 inch inseam and 55 (medium) seems to be the right frame size for me.

Hmm. Now I'm leaning towards matching celeste! Thought it would be good to break up the colour on the frame so the matching celeste works well as it's also surrounded by black on the frame.

Genuinely can't pick one though they all look well, although my original choice of celeste on black, black on celeste is my least favourite option but only just. I think either of the mixed colours also work as there's contrast throughout the bike like on the bar tape so that would keep it going, plus it would make it look like you made an effort!

Have fun scratching your head over it :D

My choice would be in the same order you posted the pictures. All work, but I favor opposites slightly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,972 ✭✭✭Flaccus

I'm leaning towards Pic1. I feel Pic 2 is too much Celeste. I sound like I'm doing a curtain dressing. lol.

I think things have now gone too far.

    I note you didn't try 2 black cages 😉

Yeah, I'd love one. Next year hopefully :) I could only afford the ultegra di2 at the time after buying a pair of 353 NSW's which are now in shortage again. Max PSI is 73 on those yokes!!

I was also waiting months for the bike to be done in the color scheme I chose, no frames available. Then Bianchi ran out of parts. The metron 5d acr bar is from their 2022 stock and has repartocorse logos instead of the usual metron logos. The aero post is not logo'd at all, also from 2022 stock apparently. The d-fly bluetooth unit which is normally stock in all xr4's and under the top cap, they ran out of, and bike was delivered with gears not even working.

LBS had to source the d-fly and they told me today that is the only XR4 in that specific colour scheme in the country. Kinda surprised. Apparently each colour scheme generates a unique id that can be searched for using a dealer app. It's not even custom as you are limited in the colours you can pick. I wanted a black downtube with logo inverted and a celeste instead of stock black seat tube. That was a bit of a risk as the paint on the edge of the seat tube where you insert the post is the thinnest on the XR4's and gloss celeste starting chipping slightly by just adjusting the post once. Not noticeable on the stock black ones. Had to order celeste paint, touch it up and luckily a seat tube protector/ring from a Giant TCR Advanced II 2012 covered the area perfectly.

4 DuraAce Di2 12 speed XR4's coming into stock in LBS in a few days and I'm trying to convince the lad buying one of them, an 11 speed will do him and he'd make a huge saving.

:) There is a reason for that. I tracked down the last black cage in existence. Elite only made a limited number of Bianchi logo Vico Carbon Cages and they stopped production earlier this year. I was lucky to get the 2 celeste ones from Italy and the black one was from an Ebay UK dealer and was stuck in An Post re-sorting hell for last 6 weeks. It only showed up 2 days ago. Dealers that claim to have stock on their sites, usually don't.

In the absence of 2 black cages, 2 celeste or 1 black and 1 celeste ?

Strangely I just managed to track down another black one. Ordered now :)
