I finally platinumed this tonight. In over 30 years of gaming, it’s the first game I ever felt the urge to platinum. I adored it. Took 150 hours, because I didn’t set out to platinum at first, so had to retrace a lot of steps for memory chips etc.

Highlights for me were building the road network and then later the zip line network. On paper they seem like the most tedious parts, but there’s a sense of fulfilment in doing it I’ve not really experienced in other games before.

The first 8 hours or so are ****e. Write them off. Once you get past that the pay off is so worth it.

One huuuuge frustration towards the end was that my trusty zip line nodes started to drop like flies and go offline due to timefall degradation, right when I was doing my final trophy (getting Delivery Time score up to 60). It meant filling trucks with mats and driving around to upgrade/repair almost every zip line node. That part alone took about 8 hours, but you know what? I loved it. It was almost like doing an emotional farewell lap to arguably my favourite game of all time.

    Pleeeeeeeease do a sequel!

Rumours that an extended cut is being released for ps4/5/pc with extra story missions..

That running together on the beach scene though...I'm still laughing at it.

Probably would play through this again if it had proper Dualsense enhancements.

Directors Cut just announced, coming to PS5. Full reveal in the next few weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,674 ✭✭✭DirtyBollox

hold on... a directors cut, of a game?

Sorry, yes it is Kojima and it is a movie ruined by gameplay, sorry! :pac:

  • Registered Users Posts: 877 ✭✭✭one armed dwarf

    Still need to complete this.
I was loving the cut scenes and the "online interaction" then became overwhelmed.
I know this will be a masterpiece by the end so I will see it through.

Not to spoil anything but the ending sections kinda suck, all the good stuff is in the first half IMO.

I can't think of any game less in need of a 'director's cut', unless it's a cut which trims the fat

I loved the end game, story bat**** crazy but i was so emotional invested in it. At the half way point, i ignored all side stuff and played itThat teaser does an almost MGS style level so looks like new stuff will be added alright. Whether it was actually cut in the first place, we may never know.

I may try this again with the directors cut. I found the world fascinating and generally liked a lot about the game, but I was at a point around 15 - 20 hours in where there was just a lot of backtracking back and forth and it just felt like it dragged on too much and I gave up. Not that it'll necessarily be any better next time round but maybe some of those new gadgets will speed some things up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,633 ✭✭✭JimBurnley

Simliar boat, played around 10-15 hours on release, enjoyed up to a point, got side tracked by something else so decided to take a break from it. When i came back to it I didn't have a scoobies what was going so just rage quit and trading in whilst it was worth good money. Always had an inclin to give it another bash, and actually picked it up again cheap recently (think about 15quid) so I'll have the shiny PS5 version for €25, looked forward to it with the additions that's been shown, with the extra power of PS5 to boot

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

I cannot wait for this! I rarely keep physical games but this was one of them and gonna pay off with the 10 quid upgrade. I'm half way through to the platinum so hopefully the trophies continue over so i can jump back in. The racing looks like fluff but as players can build and share tracks, might see some interesting ones.

Can't wait to try the catapult.

Torn on the director's cut. Looks a lot more shooting/combat orientated which I think would take away from it overall. The duelsense updates really sound good though.

So can we upload our PS4 save and continue on or is it a complete restart?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Yupp, they said it will have save transfer support alright but not sure how yet. I imagine there'll be an update for the original with an added feature to download your save.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,986 ✭✭✭OptimusTractor

May check my roads and zipping lines so. Haven't logged into it in ages.

Kojima was given free rein to do whatever he wanted with this game and they're still calling this thing the director's cut lol.

I think he just got excited by the bells and whistles on the PS5 controller and couldn't help himself. Cost effective way for Sony to make a few quid by tacking some filler on to an already finished game.

Apparently some reviewers giving praise when their original review called it boring. Anyway, the Digital Foundry is increasing, sounds like quality mode is the way to go with 4k that only dips from 60fps to 50fps during certain conditions like BT events and cutscenes.

The save transfer sounds dodgy though, you can't have any open orders and some trophy unlocks won't carry over if 'conditions have changed'. I'll be installing death stranding again tonight to prepare my save for the upgrade. Upgrade should be available at midnight tonight or tomorrow. Aus and NZ already have it for 20 dollars, it's 5 pounds in UK.

Disappointed to see they seemingly made delivery's alot easier. Still looking forward to another playthrough though.

It was going so well for him in that video until he lost all credibility when it transpires he didn't do much if any road building. What kind of monster is he ???? I bet he never gave any likes to people either. 😂

This would be a great version to play I'd say if you've not played it before and in the ultrawide setting but I'm not sure I'd get the same out of it second time around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Why would you build roads when there's other saps lining up to build them for you

I haven't played in months but my last run through was to try get the platinum starting with 5 star every contact but gave up half way through. I just figured id use the zip line everywhere but goddamn, roads would have come in very handy :(

I installed it there again to upload my save, figgity **** thing. Stand near a delivery terminal, press start, system, export. Anyway, i remember why i quit, i was doing jobs for the collector and his cave/trench is a nightmare to get in and out of. Need to set up a proper ladder for quick entry/exit.

I can't wait to play the upgrade. It already looked incredible so looking forward to seeing improvements.

Upgrade is $10 on the US store, downloading it now.

10 euro on the Irish store, bargain!

I think I paid 10 for the game itself, still sitting at home sealed, will definitely get the upgrade at a tenner 🙂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,917 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Grab him by the scruff and scream in his face you like that ladder, you like it 56 f'n times 🤬

I started over with this, rather than carry in a save file. That opening walk down to the first town with "Don't be so serious" playing is majestic.

You are eased in a little bit better with some better tips earlier on around how the shared world works. And I felt like I got access to some equipment a small bit earlier but to be honest, it was so long since I played the original I didn't notice a huge difference. The first time everything was new, but now I know what is happening and what i have to do so I am moving faster through it.

I did love the original so it comes as no surprise that I like this too.

Oh yeah, the cans of monster energy drink / product placement in the personal room is gone.

I decided to continue my end game save. I have 70% if trophies so gonna go for the platinum. The only problem is i forget how to play :) collector isn't on the network yet so i can't fabricate items and my boots just got destroyed so walking around in bloody socks. At least someone left a rope for me to climb out of the trench. Gotta hike back to the nearest distribution centre to make some fresh gear before heading out.

Really helped to start again though as i loved the story and like you said Grumpy, parts like that where your trekking towards a city and the music kicks in are just epic. If i do start a new playthrough, the plat will go out the window so gonna keep on keeping on with trying to get contact to 5 star. I might even build a road or 2.

Actually... Does anyone know if there are multiple save files? I wouldn't mind playing through chapter 1 again to re-learn the mechanics but don't want to lose my end game save.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Loving this all over again. Got a few facilities to 5 stars and even built a road, feels good giving back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,917 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Apparently you can fast travel back to the start and experience the new stuff from your existing save file and then just back.

You prob won't get the opening where you meet Fragile and the first body drop off trip before it opens up into the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Yeah, might just keep going with my save but if i fancy a playthrough of the story again, just start on a different profile. Great feeling of finding a well needed zipline and going to give it loads of thanks only to find it's one you built. *Self high five*

I never used trucks before but just delivered a **** load of goods with one so think I'm gonna load up on road materials and just go road building for a while :)

This game is a master piece. The game mechanics are amazing.

I'm 36 hours in to my second play through and for most of that I've been on Episode 3. Last time I focused on just delivering packages but now I'm building the infrastructure.

I've built the whole road from lake knot to South lake knot. It took ages but it's kind of a meditation. I log on and hike for a few hours bringing floating carriers of metal and ceramics with me.

I have now just wizzed through episode 4-5.

Just met mamma so now I can build a bunch of zip lines. Have them set up now to get from mama across the waterfall to the farm. And another from South distribution center up to the weather station.

Heading to the mountains now will try zip line let me them to keep moving road building materials out that direction.

    Anything to avoid those BTs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

I'm still really torn on whether to keep going on my end game to platinum or start a new game and do what you're doing grumpy. My problem is that i have a great network of ziplines so I'm just zipping from one delivery to another and it's getting a bit boring, the plat is looking like too much of a grind.

I could just focus on road building though and load a truck with tons of deliveries instead of doing 1 at a time.

Also, speaking of Mama, my missus is watching Maid on Netflix and it's so weird seeing the lead actress who also plays Mama.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,917 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

That is the risk, it is such a rewarding struggle to hike over the mountains and deliver something, that when you get the roads and zip lines and just drive/zip right there it loses that rewarding feeling. I've limited the Zip lines to areas that are a right pain. The weather station I hated that trek as there are so many BTs it takes ages. And that big huge waterfall that you can't get across between South Knot and the Timefall Farm.

I am definitely enjoying the second playthrough more. I generally prefer the second time around in most games as I have a better idea of what to do so I can enjoy the mechanics more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

I was actually wondering about road building and you sound like the right chap to ask. I was thinking of loading up a truck with metals and ceramics and hitting the road, building as i go. Do you find the float device works better?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,633 ✭✭✭JimBurnley

You sound like a pair of civil engineers 😀

The fastest way I have found is with the bike with the little trailer. It can carry a surprising amount and it is much faster than the trucks. If you just drive to the end of the last bit of road you laid then you can get to the next paver easily and keep it moving that way.

The main stretch down to the south distro centre and then to the cosplayer is fairly quick. You can get a good bit of materials from the different buildings maybe rob a few mule postboxes that usually does it.

Getting over to south knot city was much harder as each paver needed way more materials so it takes a few trips each time, and it is harder to find the ceramics.

I'm starting building towards the Mountain distribution area now. I've done the first two bits that turn right at the craftsman and I've also two bits up to the weather station done but they are not connected in yet so not much use right now.

I pushed through the first two episodes fairly quick, maybe 2-4 hours. Then I've purposely been taking my time on Episode 3 just laying road 🤣. I just stick on the soundtrack and potter over and back, a chain of floating carriers or if I want to speed up I use the bike.

If I don't see and mules or BTs and just stick to my work I find it very relaxing. I've been doing that for a solid 30 hours now. Only last night did I blast through episode 4 which is very short (the WW1 one).

Now I have the zip lines I'm setting them up to be able to get to the pavers with the materials a bit faster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,917 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Funny enough I used to work in civil engineering and built real roads! It's like a truck driver getting home and playing truck simulator for the evening 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,151 ✭✭✭_CreeD_

In the east the Road makes a lot of sense, especially for the terrain between Distribution Center South of Lake Knot and South Knot. For the West I'd stop at the Distribution Center North of Mountain Knot and just use Zip lines from there. It's harder to activate the network through there which means paving costs will be much higher and it's pretty flat from there to Mountain Knot if you do want to take a vehicle. Also that last stretch of road from the valley floor up to the city is terribly designed and winds like crazy, ground level is more direct. If you do plan on making a lot of van runs anyway just pick a side of that last split uphill and use your cuffs to kill all the BTs in your way. If you wipe them all in that zone they're gone for good and you can just drive up easily from then on. Of course none of that answers the insane OCD of just wanting to finish it :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,917 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Ive almost linked the roads. I had gone all the way to the south city , now I've been working on getting around by the craftsman to the mountain knot city. It's linked all the way around passed the incinerator to the to the distribution center behind the mountain . I've more sections to join up. Only three more near the terrorists site on the way up to mountain knot city. Then three more to get over the snow.

It is a bit if a pain to get 7000 ceramics to the top of a mountain for one small section. But I'm determined to do it.

Decent zipline infrastructure too. Tending to use it to get to the areas without a road. Artist, robotics, prepper, mountaineer etc.

I'm still amazed by this game. There is so much effort put into such small things that no one else seems to even think about. I guess that is why he is so good.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,986 ✭✭✭OptimusTractor

Anyone have 1m likes from other porters. On the crest of 800000 myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,917 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

Just finished it, clocking in at just past the 80 hour mark. Every minute was glorious.

I did spend a huge chunk of that building every inch of road in the game. I could drive most places and those without roads had zip lines.

The guy is a genius. How he turned walking into such an enjoyable and rewarding mechanic is amazing. Much like hill walking in real life you not only feel rewarded for reaching the top. But the actual journey was its own reward too.

It is an amazing world. I love the pathing in it too. (Where if you travel the same way again and again you start to see the path forming on the ground).

It is also stunning to look at with each area very different. I was very often just walking for hours exploring.

I never got sick of the delivering. Trucks and zip lines make it easier but also less rewarding so I would still head off on hikes to remote locations with boxes on a floating carrier just to get that reward.

The story is bonkers. Lots of the ideas are so out there they reach ridiculous levels, but I feel that Kojima is not happy doing anything even remotely safe and without these mad ideas we wouldn't get the insane level of detail put into the game mechanics either, which the game is so much better for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,682 ✭✭✭Glebee

Just started Chapter 5 and still cant tell if I love this game or hate it.. Its amazing that a game can be so divisive that you cant decide if is good or bad..

Finally decided to start a new playthrough as going for the platinum was killing my love for the game. On the Directors Cut, anyone know what the new difficulties affect? I would rather breeze through BT encounters and not worry about Mule camps but u don't want the deliveries to be easier. The treks are the most rewarding bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,917 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I left it as it was, I found the mules and BTs much easier second time as I knew what to do. They were far less annoying/scary. Some parts do force you through a BT area but in general, I found it much easier to avoid them altogether.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,901 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Cool ok thanks. And with the new directors cut stuff, i read they introduced new tools you though through the story. Is Christ 2 still worth getting through quickly enough or any npc's worth delivering to first?

Was in the Pollock Holes in Kilkee yesterday and wandering around the rocks gave me a real hankering for some Death Stranding :)
