Disney+ Plans 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Prequel Series

Though Disney has tried a few times to make a new adaptation of Jules Verne's classic sci-fi yarn 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, none have been able to free themselves from the squiddy grip of development hell. Instead, the studio is now putting its focus on a prequel series for Disney+, one that is destined to shoot in the UK and Europe.

James Dormer, who has worked on shows including Strike Back and Beowulf: Return To The Shieldlands, is on board as head writer for a show that will chart how Captain Nemo first started his adventurous life with advanced (for the 19th century, at least) submarine The Nautilus. An Indian prince robbed of his birth right and family, a prisoner of the East India Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces which have taken everything from him, Nemo set sail with his ragtag crew on board the awe-inspiring vessel, battling foes and discovering magical underwater worlds. The 10-part first season will kick off shooting next year.

    Three Pines

Alfred Molina  is to star in Amazon police drama series Three Pines, which comes from The Crown producer Left Bank Pictures.

The Spider-Man star is to play Chief Inspector Armand Gamache in the Canadian original, which was first revealed by Deadline in May 2020.

The eight-part series has begun production in Montreal and rural Quebec. It will film through to December and launch on Amazon in a number of territories including Canada, the U.S. and UK.

Based on Louise Penny’s book series, Gamache of the Sûreté du Québec is a man who sees things that others do not: the light between the cracks, the mythic in the mundane, and the evil in the seemingly ordinary. As he investigates a spate of murders in Three Pines, a seemingly idyllic village, he discovers long-buried secrets and faces a few of his own ghosts.

    Life Goes On - Reboot

Nkechi Okoro Carroll is staying in business with Warner Bros.

The All American showrunner is rebooting classic ABC drama Life Goes On and is launching her own production company Rock My Soul Productions, with ex-AGBO exec and former WME agent Lindsay Dunn  as Head of Television, as part of a major overall deal renewal with the studio.

Deadline understands that Warner Bros. beat out a number of other bidders to resign Okoro Carroll in a deal that is thought to be well into eight figures.

“I am so excited to continue my partnership with Channing Dungey, Brett Paul and the extended WarnerMedia family,” Okoro Carroll said. “We’ve only just scratched the surface of the stories we want to tell together. Our mission at Rock My Soul Productions is to create content that leaves the world a little bit of a better place than how we found it. Warner Bros.’ continued support of this mission means everything to me.”

HBO Max has ordered a pilot for a potential “Dead Boy Detectives” series, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.

Based on the DC Comics characters created by Neil Gaiman, the one-hour series would follow the Dead Boy Detectives — Charles Rowland and Edwin Paine — who decided not to enter the afterlife in order to stay on earth and investigate crimes involving the supernatural.

Sebastian Croft and Ty Tennant are set to play Rowland and Paine respectively in the upcoming third season of “Doom Patrol,” though they are not believed to be attached to the pilot at this time.

E4 is booting up GamesMaster for a brand new incarnation of the iconic series.

GamesMaster launched in January 1992 and ran for seven season. It was the first British show dedicated to gaming and across the run, became a cultural phenomenon with names such as Ian Wright and Zoe Ball as celebrity guests and a young Simon Amstell as a hopeful contestant.

Now, 23 years later in the esports era, GamesMaster is returning to win over a new generation of video game fans. The new series will be a digital-first programme, premiering on E4’s YouTube channel before going on to be broadcast on linear TV. The three-part series will see celebrities, gaming stars and super fans all take part in challenges, races and epic fights. Through virtual battles across a range of games, the competitors will try everything in their power to claim a legendary Golden Joystick Trophy. But while they play, they’ll be watched over by the all-knowing GamesMaster, famously portrayed in the original by Sir Patrick Moore.

Produced in a social-first partnership with Oculus Quest 2, the series is co-produced by Barcroft TV, a Future PLC company and Alaska TV. The showrunner is Céin McGillicuddy. It was commissioned for linear by Factual Entertainment Commissioning editor, Tim Hancock and for digital by Digital Commissioning Exec Tom Pullen and Head of Digital Commissioning, Sacha Khari.

Khari said: ”GamesMaster was a household name back in the 90’s and this new revamped version for social and E4 retains the elements that made this show so special, while also bringing it bang up to date, improving game quality and bringing in fresh and current names to tackle the trickiest GamesMaster challenges yet.”

    Harlot's Ghost

Mark Gordon Pictures is moving along with its series adaptation of Norman Mailer's spy epic Harlot’s Ghost.

The Grey’s Anatomy and The Rookie producer has attached The Bureau creator Éric Rochant to serve as showrunner on the drama project, which is in development at the company.

Rochant, who also is developing a global spy thriller  with Snowpiercer producer Tomorrow Studios, will write, direct, exec produce and showrun the project.

Harlot’s Ghost, which was published in 1991, is a fictional chronicle of the CIA. The story centers on Harry Hubbard, the son and godson of CIA legends. His journey to learn the secrets of his society — and his own past — takes him through the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the “momentous catastrophe” of the Kennedy assassination. All the while, Hubbard is haunted by women who were loved by both his godfather and President Kennedy.

Drop Dead Diva getting a reboot

Says it's gender swapped but only as much as it's a man who dies instead of a woman and ends up in a woman's body. I didn't watch the original so don't know how much you see of the original person. But I do see comments already saying how it could be seen as transphobic, as if this hasn't been done before. Dr. Sam Beckett did it a number of times.

Flight of the Navigator reboot in the works at Disney+

Disney has made no secret of its strategy of reviving and reimagining its own back catalogue for modern audiences, whether that’s as movie sequels or TV series remakes. Now, another property is in its sights: 1986 sci-fi flick Flight of the Navigator.

The original, starring Joey Cramer, Sarah Jessica Parker and Veronica Cartwright, follows a boy who travels eight years into the future with a wise-cracking alien ship named Max – voiced by Paul Reubens, Randal Kleiser (Grease) directed from a script by Michael Burton and Phil Joanou.

The new version of the story will be a female-led adventure, with Bryce Dallas Howard on board to produce and take the helm. John Swartz, Howard’s producing partner at her company Nine Muses, and Justin Springer are also attached to produce.

It marks a reunion between Howard and the Disney streaming service, after she directed m two episodes of its Star Wars series The Mandalorian.

‘Let the Right One In’ Vampire Drama Starring Demián Bichir Ordered To Series By Showtime

Showtime has picked up to series pilot Let the Right One In, starring Demián Bichir, completing the vampire drama’s long journey to the screen.

The project, which also stars Anika Noni Rose, Grace Gummer, Madison Taylor Baez, Kevin Carroll, Ian Foreman and Jacob Buster, hails from Andrew Hinderaker, who wrote the pilot and serves as showrunner, Seith Mann, who directed the pilot and will also direct additional episodes, as well as Tomorrow Studios, which has been the driver behind the drama in its various incarnations for about seven years.

Inspired by the best-selling 2004 novel by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist and its 2008 Swedish film adaptation, the series is described as an exploration of human frailty, strength and compassion through elevated genre lens. It centers on Mark (Bichir) and his daughter Eleanor (Baez) whose lives were changed forever 10 years earlier when she was turned into a vampire. Locked in at age 12, perhaps forever, Eleanor lives a closed-in life, able to go out only at night, while her father does his best to provide her with the human blood she needs to stay alive.

The series, which has received a 10-episode order and will go into production in New York City in early 2022, is executive produced by Hinderaker, Mann, and Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements for Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between Adelstein and ITV Studios. Alissa Bachner serves as co-executive producer. Bichir is a producer.

Let the Right One In was originally developed by Tomorrow Studios and set up at A&E and A+E Studios in 2015. A year later, it moved to TNT where a pilot was ordered and cast but did not go to production. That version was closer to the original source material and was described as an eerie drama about a young boy, long tormented by his classmates, who finds solace in a friendship with a charismatic female vampire who appears to be near his age. Tomorrow Studios shopped the project and it ultimately landed at Showtime for redevelopment with a new writer, resulting in the incarnation that went to series.

The Channel 4 comedy, which premiered in 2018, saw McGee mine her own experiences to create a candid, family-centred comedy set against the backdrop of The Troubles. It was also All 4’s biggest comedy launch since 2012, in terms of views during its first six days.

It follows Erin (Saoirse Monica Jackson), her cousin Orla (Louisa Harland) and friends Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) and Michelle’s tag along English cousin, aka The Wee English Fella, James (Dylan Llewellyn), as they navigate their teens in Derry in the early 1990s.
