    Belclare and texel,

No I was shown the sheep they had picked out for premier and today's sales. Both breeders were in the rosettes in their breed sales and high money. Will see how they fare today.

Ram lambs left off 3 with 64 ewes yesterday. Also left off the old rams with the main bunch. Roll on the 1st of Feb.

Surprisingly average prices in Kilkenny today considering the lamb trade.

A neighbour phoned me from the sale asking for advice, one of the texels he was interested in came from a breeder I knew to have Texel Throat in his flock, so he asked him about it,........ he was told that the lambs sire was prone to breeding TT alright and he couldn't guarantee that thei lamb wouldn't get it either

A neighbour lost two of the same breeders rams with TT, one after one season and the other after two seasons. Those guys should be made compensate

anyone ever get orf on their hand?. have 3 small lumps on my hand at the moment. Keeping them covered but was wondering if there is any better cure than letting it run its course

Jesus. Afraid i have no cure for you. Is it very sore?

Have a lamb bad with it here, its after going into her gum - which I haven't even seen before. Not sure what can be done for her either, its getting better now, I just thjnk it has to run its course...

Scotch ewe lambs normally at least e30 ahead of wethers. With wethers so dear this year that probably won't happen. Got e86 for wethers last week. Was hoping for near e100. Going to mart next week, time will tell

Ya I got it on my finger a few years back. Looked really nasty but wasn’t a bit sore. Looked like a massive infected blister but no fluid inside it. I got small swollen lymph nodes in my armpit too but again that didn’t hurt.

dint know about any cures but if it’s any reassurance it didn’t hurt and it didn’t cause any issues

Took the lambs off the ewes about 5/6 weeks ago to wean is it ok to mix them together again now or is it best avoided, or is there no issue doing this, im sure the ewes are dried up at this stage.

Just on the previous post about orf i ended up fairly sick with it. i had to go to the doctor twice and get two sets of antibiotics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,881 ✭✭✭✭wrangler

I was in a boarding school in Dublin when I got it, doctors there hadn't a clue what it was until my mother got it and a country doctor diagnosed it. my whole arm swelled up with the infection and had to be put on a drip in hospital. I got infected at home for a few days when feeding pet lambs

Anyone on here have a bateson livestock trailer with sheep decks? If so how do you manage the deck system, its very awkward to load and unload on your own as you have to lift half of the deck up with the weight of the lambs. Just wondering has anyone with one came up with a design to make it easier

Thanks wrangler, I was thinking about a winch earlier alright but wasn't sure which one would be best.

What do people find as the best mineral drench for ewes pre joining the ram,

never have much joy with blouses. I prefer the mineral drench but it’s hard to round them up the whole time.

I have a few ewes that are pining and will get them blood tested but we are very low in cobalt here

Is anyone else finding it a tough couple of weeks for ewes getting lame ?? Never had it as bad most been the warm damp days

I was thinking of giving nutrigain breeding ewe have such small numbers wouldn't be worth my while getting boluses, plus the boluses i hear can be difficult to give ewes when you are not used to using them

    Idle curiosity question.

Went (failed) ram shopping today. One pedigree ram had a fault, as I saw it anyway. On his right knee he had a noticeable fluid filled swelling. Had a slight limp you would only notice when he'd walk slowly. What might cause such a thing? Left him where he was, after the fact I rang my own vet who agreed, said a knee problem was likely to return. Line was bad so we didn't get into details.

The likes of that ram you looked at should be culled imo. Had to buy a few rams this year and it seems like people are putting rams for sale with obvious faults, bad mouths, down in the pasterns and in some cases just screws of things that should never have been kept for rams. Or else they haven't a clue and a sheep is a sheep.

I looked at a Suffolk hogget ram for instance, he was a fine ram but his teeth were so far forward they missed the pad on top. It was like a mouth of a aged sheep...would hate to see him at 3 years old. Said it to the breeder and he didn't know what I was on about. Ya would think breed Societys would be more on top of these kind of things.

Very prominent ram in teh texel society known for texel throat too, yet a huge number in the premier had his breeding

Anyone here that keeps hill sheep on Commonage that i could pm a few questions to?

I said on Twitter that breeders/resellers should have a star rating system for themselves, not just animals. Might sort out a lot of chancers. I didn't have a row with them either way as they claimed they hadn't noticed but I spotted him lame 80 yards from the pen. The worrying thing, like you mentioned, and for more reason that one, is the ram was bought in Blessington at the society sale a week previous. That throws up a couple of different questions, but sure no point in getting into that with lads as the animal either suits on the day or doesn't.

a fellow rang me from a multi breed sale that a texel breeder had 3 rams there, 2 had back legs that were quite obvious sickled inwards but the third seemed ok .

I knew the breeder in question and warned him that the ram must have a defect otherwise he'd be at a society sale , he watched from a distance and noticed that each time somebody entered the pen the ram laid shortly after they left, and in the ring he had very slow mobility with breeder holding him other than parading around.
