It's a fair point with regards the Haas and next season but I really don't expect them to improve as their budget must be the smallest in F1 and the extra years notice that the teams have had since the regulations were pushed back makes me think that there won't be a huge shake up in the order.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,514 ✭✭✭recyclebin

Schumacher isn't exactly trouncing Mazepin lately. I'm not sure if he deserves or has earned a better drive just yet. He still has a lot to prove in my opinion. His upbringing would have gave him a lot more opportunities and a major head start compared to most.

What happened in qualifying the last day? Did he disobey team orders and overtake Mazepin or what happened?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,268 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

I can't see Russell being happy to take the number 2 either and I really don't think he'd be happy to fill Valterri's yes man shoes, if that's what they want from him he's better off staying at Williams and I just don't think he'd go for that. He's a huge talent and has time on his hands. He'll definitely be quicker than Valterri and it's going to be very interesting to see how fast he is compared to Lewis, wouldn't be surprised if he outqualifies him fairly regularly.

Latifi provides about 75% of the Williams sponsorship so cant leave them.

Williams used to get all of Russells engines/parts at a discount from Mercedes so could see Merc offering the same discount if they take on De Vries so I imagine thats nailed on to happen.

    And then from the academies;

Tsunoda was likely to stay as Vips doesnt seem likely to win F2 this year so will likely stay in F2 for 2022. Lawson and Daruvala are even further back than Vips. So RB dont have any replacement ready so Tsunoda remains. RB academy drivers are 1 and 2 in F3 so they may be an option for 2023 depending how they do next year in F2.

Ferrari's only F2 title contender would be Shwartzman, he may actually appeal to Haas (double down on the Russia theme with a second Russian driver) with Mick then shifting over to the Alfa displacing Giovinazzi.

The most interesting F2 drivers would be Zhou and Piastri the two Alpine juniors but Alpine dont supply anyone else engines so they have nowhere to go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,087 ✭✭✭muckwarrior

There's a limit to how much a driver can be forced to be a number 2. If they're consistently quicker than the incumbent, then it would be farcical to have them move out of the way repeatedly. You can only do that sort of crap when one driver has an established lead in the championship. George knows that if he can match or beat Hamilton consistently then sooner or later they have to give him equal status.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,547 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

If he can even match Hamilton then he'll be considered better than Hamilton. Its like when leclerc joined Ferrari and the narrative was that if leclerc could lose but even stay somewhat competitive with vettel in his first year then it would be a win for leclerc.

You'd expect George to be ahead of Hamilton a few times in a season due to various circumstances, but they should be relatively rare. If they need to tell George to move over more than once or twice in the first half of the season then it means George is able to be ahead of Hamilton in the first place so he's probably as quick or quicker than Hamilton. And that would change the calculations entirely.

As the RedBull Mercedes title fight rages on, so does the development fight. Resources for next years car are thrown into this year. See 2008 where Brawn and RedBull (lol just realises that) rose as title contenders. McLaren and Ferrari lost out.

Its easy easy to see a chain reaction of a non competitive car and someone retiring. Alpine, Ferrari and McLaren might next year the early hitters, all they hope for is an extended title fight to the last race between Max and Lewis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,585 ✭✭✭✭Dont be at yourself

I don’t think George will play the Bottas role, and Mercedes like to pretend they don’t prioritise drivers until later in the championship. If George gets a few early good results over Hamilton, it will put Mercedes in a difficult position because Hamilton will not accept being beaten by his teammate (as we’ve seen previously). And all that will play into their rivals’ hands, who will be putting their weight behind Max and Leclerc.

On the topic of what’s happening with AR, Mazapin posted a cryptic story on Instagram just saying “#NM99😉”…..

99 is Gio’s number so I’m wondering could it be coming available soon? If so, has Gio changed it or is he out?!? Part of me loved the musical chairs part of the season haha

Jesus that’s poor form if true. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Schumacher move to Alfa given the relationship between him and Mazepin and the clout that Mazepin has with the team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,547 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Apparently that's his number from previous formula and he is no. 9 now. Accident? Who knows.

He would have to wait 2 years after Gio leaves to get the no. 99

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,814 ✭✭✭Captain_Crash

Would he! Didn’t realise there were limits on when a number can be used again! Makes mazapins post even odd’er so!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,814 ✭✭✭Captain_Crash

Yeah dunno what the deal with it is! He posted it tho, I saw it myself! I don’t follow him but it appeared on that suggestion page if your familiar with Instagram I’m sure you know what I’m on about haha

Would be silly of Mercedes to have a set 1-2 from too early in the season. We don't know how the cars are going to behave next year at all and especially with the big teams a mis-step early could leave them chasing. With completely new cars there could be (particularly the big teams) massive improvements to be made over the season. We saw in 09 with Ferrari and McLaren making massive gains over the season even aside from the double diffuser. The cars were still flawed and they had to change direction but it was possible. A big team could end up with a consistently 3rd fastest car or start 6th/7th and make it people with a couple of wins by mid-season.

It's amazing how different a perspective people can get to what the hard numbers show.

Schumacher's average qualifying gap to Mazepin this year is 0.464s while, for comparison with someone who's qualifying is highly rated, George Russell's average gap to Latifi is 0.37s. That's based on the data here which only goes as far as Hungary, but if you look at Spa Schumacher was a full second ahead and at Zandvoort he was 0.5 ahead of Mazepin so he's stretched that average gap even further. The numbers place him as the clear third best performer on the grid behind only Verstappen and Gasly.

Yet, based almost entirely on the fact that we get all our information from the brazenly partisan British coverage, George is "Mr Saturday" and Mick isn't performing that well. Reality is he's doing as much as anyone could ask given how bad the Haas is, and no matter how much faster he is than Mazepin he can't avoid starting on the back row next to him, where anything can happen on the first lap. If Mick was in a Williams he'd likely be in with a good shout of getting into Q2 and Q3 regularly.

In race conditions he's only finished behind his teammate twice in 13 races, in both cases I believe he had been involved in incidents that put him behind.

Yeah it's all in the retelling. I think there was a period before the summer break where Schumacher made some mistakes and spun a few times which narrowed the gap in some ways. But, as you point out, he is trouncing him in Quali and races.

But people use stats to suit their preferred narrative. For example you site the stat that Mazepin has only been beaten by a bigger margin by Gasley and Max has beaten Perex by the same difference, but would you site that as evidence that Perez is being hammered by his teammate? I think lots more posters would mount a defence of Perez loosing margin than Mazepin, in spite of the actual margin being about the same.

Just confirmed - Albon to Williams and Latifi keeps his seat

    https://www.williamsf1.com/news/2021/drivers/williams-racing-confirms-latifi-albon-for-2022

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,268 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

I didn’t realise Daniel had a seat at McLaren until 2023. The team boss still says they are committed to him but if his form doesn’t improve he’s probably going to cost them third place in the constructors this year.

No idea what that post from mazepin means but I’d like to see Schumacher out of that Haas so we can see what he’s actually like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,547 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Happy for him. Hope he can do what Gasley has done and rebuild his reputation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,249 ✭✭✭✭flazio

This is quite telling. Source - BBC

A Red Bull spokesperson said: 'We have released Alex to become a Williams Racing driver in 2022 but retain a relationship with him that includes future options."

I suspect that Alex will be treated like a driver who's just announced he's leaving the team throughout his time at Williams until such a time that he does move on or Red Bull say they have nothing further to do with him.

Delighted for Alex and that has to be the surprise if the season. Everyone was expecting De Vries to get that seat. I would say Mercedes must be raging but at the same time the ultimate choice of who got that seat was down to Williams management and not Mercedes. But of course this might mean no more free engines from Mercedes for Williams so they will have to start paying for them now but maybe they think they can afford it now or are they planning to change engines to say a Ferrari or Renault engine again. Williams Ferrari can you imagine lol.

Maybe turning to the Redbull engines? Which come online next year.......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,547 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

RB might retain an interest in him beyond using him as a driver. He'll be getting to use a Mercedes engine next year and RB will be building its own engines from next year too. So they might be very interested in Alex, but for his knowledge rather than his driving services.

Toto wanted to make sure he had severed ties and probably lock him into all sorts of confidentiality agreements before he could sign to drive a Mercedes engine.

I don't know ow how these things work. Bit I'm sure Alex is still interested in a future RB drive and there's nothing to stop the head of the RB engine department from calling in on his old pal Alex for a cuppa. I wonder what will happen there.

    I think

I think he should do better this weekend. He missed out on FP1 and 2 last weekend so that was never going to be easy for him to get upto speed especially in a car he had not driven much if ever before then.

Poor Kimi do missing out again.

    Peace and long life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,547 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

He had only done 3 fp1 this season so far plus pre season testing. So not nothing but jumping in at fp3 was a tough ask. He did well. Didn't make a balls of it or anything (he spun on his first lap in one of the practice outings earlier in the season so expectations were low).

Quali was poor compared to Gio (who started a shocking 7th) but the race was surprisingly solid. Fair play to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,547 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

The race podcast made a good point to about how all the top teams have their driver of tomorrow on the car already. RB has max, ferrari has Leclerc, Mercedes has Russell and mclaren has Lando.

They're all under 23 and all academy men. They could be there fighting each other for the next decade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,268 ✭✭✭✭MadYaker

I think Kubica put in a respectable performance considering the circumstances, that track seemed like a proper workout for the drivers, he’ll probably be a bit better at Monza.

I’ve no idea who De Vries is really but I’m happy to see Albon back in anF1 seat.

Could do with the 3 cars per team coming in with the amount of academy drivers coming to the fore in the next few years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,134 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

I'd imagine Williams will loose the Merc perks now. I know Albon was backed by a very big Thai oil company at one stage so he may be bringing that with him again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,887 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Their engine deal runs to 2025 or so, if they cut it, they could get the new RB Powertrain, or Renault.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,547 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I remember hearing they only got money off (not free, somethinglike 50%) the merc engines in Russell's car. So it's not an amazing deal. I'd say they really needed the money for the last few years but Russell himself was probably a sweetener. Now the team might not need the discount so much since they have some new investors.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,870 ✭✭✭✭klose

He won F2 in 2019 in what seems to be regarded as a poor year for it, he did beat latifi in second however if that's to be used as some sort of reference?

Interestingly he finished 4th in 2018 behind a trio of Russell, norris and albon. He also won Formula E this year too, again for what that's worth I'm not really sure.

I mean on paper he certainlly warrents a F1 drive I guess?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,297 ✭✭✭✭AMKC
    Ms

Not only did he win Formula E but he became Formula E's first WDC although why any of the drivers who won the series before that were not WDC drivers is beyond me. I thought they were.

    Peace and long life.

Nyck de Vries was no Mercedes academy driver so no offense taken by Mercedes. Nyck won the f2 title in his third season among the weakest field in years.

He seems to have money and might end up at Sauber anyway as the rest of the prediction came true.

Btw with Albon back, eight of the F1 field right now are Red Bull academy drivers.

What brings us to the massive problem of a lack of seats for academy driver in general. We won't see new teams anytime soon, so Alpine would need to pay Alfa to seat One of their drivers.

    Interesting thought here: https://the-race.com/formula-1/mark-hughes-albon-deal-hints-at-mercedes-red-bull-f1-power-shift/

Idea is that red bull engines will become vw/Audi in the next year's. Instead of developing an engine from scratch take over a competitive engine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,547 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Bbc said he was the first Dutch WDC in an FIA competition. Beat Max to a WDC. .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,249 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Sorry, but just clarify what "WDC" means in this context and why Mr Freeze is considered one this year but JEV isn't a two time WDC?

It’s a silly technicality, as Formula E wasn’t designated a world championship by the FIA before so the champion wasn’t the world champion in the eyes of the FIA. In reality nothing about the series has changed, it’s just as international as before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,514 ✭✭✭recyclebin

That article about VW and Red Bull makes no sense. Why would Honda and Red Bull let VW come in and take the credit for their engine.

It makes more sense for a collaboration between Red Bull and Williams and maybe long term for Williams to move over to the Red Bull Honda power unit. It gives Red Bull more options for their drivers and more power at the table for future regulations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,661 ✭✭✭quokula

With Albon back, 35% of the drivers on the grid are now Red Bull Academy drivers. Along with two teams and restoring one of the best tracks on the calendar, they really get too little credit for how much they’ve contributed to F1 over the last decade and a half.

They might just be a drinks company but they have never been about anything other than associating their brand with the most exciting action and heroic drivers. They don’t need to sell a message of hybrid efficiency and reliability and all the other things manufacturers have lobbied for that have dragged the sport down in recent years. They’re one of the few serious voices in the sport calling for the next set of regs to bring back the screaming engines that the fans all love.

I’d love to see more teams of this nature invest in the sport (I guess the closest parallel were Benetton) rather than the heavy car manufacturer influence we have today. I hope the departure of Honda doesn’t put them completely out of contention and they can take over the engine program without too many major problems, perhaps it could be a model for the future with completely self sufficient teams who aren’t answerable to a manufacturer - obviously that will only work with far cheaper simpler power units than what we have today though, barring another billionaire like Mateschitz pouring their money into a project.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,491 ✭✭✭Harika

Red bull would not want to throw millions at an engine development. VW or any other company interested in F1 can take this over without getting into the problems Honda ran into while developing.

Depending on the next engine generation, they might not change at all or expand the electric part of it.

The Honda/RB is a good base to start from

Seems Merc are good with dropping the MGU-H if it means the VW would join.

Toto Wolff said they'd only accept that if alignment on various other (unspecified) points is reached. What Mercedes say in public and do in private is rarely related so I think there's a long way to go before this happens, but it will be very good news for the sport if it does.

Four winning constructors so far this year. Alpine, McLaren, Mercedes and Red Bull.
