The claim of the next 1-2 weeks will be verified pretty soon. What is it that tells you he is wrong? Bear in mind that in a few weeks we could have nearly 80% of the total population vaccinated and a good few of those remaining will have had COVID.

No one knows when it will peak, just guessing. Last week MM said the peak will be at the end of September now this one say's in the next 2 weeks. Better to agree predictions between themselves than everyone plucking figures out thin air and contradicting each other.

The vaccine also leads people to conclude a status that may not be true at this stage as well it would seem.

Yeah and he got those numbers from Nolan. Now they see a different outcome from the models and we'll see in a week or two.

Sounds like the usual "just 2 more weeks" mantra we have been hearing since March 2020. At this stage I wouldn't be getting my hopes up. At this stage you need to take anything they say with a huge lump of salt. I can see Holahan coming stomping in and putting a stop to this.

You'll be hard pressed to find a bigger critic of NPHET or Nolan than myself. I think they've been overly cautious for some time now. That interview this morning was almost like the curtain opening. No mention of concern or caution, just positive comments about coming out of restrictions while maintaining personal responsibility and masks in some situations. He genuinely sounded excited about having students back on campus.

This is a complete mode change from him as he's usually quite sober in his interviews and doesn't give much away.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Well, if Tony does come out with more "concerning" advice then we know where the problem really lies and it's up to the government to put him back in his box.

Encouraging mutterings this morning . Hard to feel any way confident but hopefully this plan at the end of the month will be a welcome surprise and restrictions will be peeled back more than many had anticipated . We really need to show so much more ambition going forward now .

He did indicate mid September for further easing so I'm wondering where those other "sources" are getting their quotes from. Is it that paper never refuses ink or is Tony going solo on this.

The problem has always been Holahan. Look at the trouble his tweet during summer caused because people were doing as they were told by the government and having an outdoor summer. By right this man should not be in this position

This is what annoys me. There is a massive agenda to vaccinate 12+ year olds (because there are almost no adults left to vaccinate?). We are being bombarded with news articles and "interviews" across TV, radio and print pushing for this even though it is largely unnecessary.

This morning on the front pages of RTE.ie, IrishTimes.com and Independent.ie we have the headline news articles below. Regardless of your opinion on the topic, anybody who thinks the media are independent has their head in the clouds.

4% positive for covid during school year so that would mean 96% were not positive. Why not go with that headline? It's a complete joke what the government are doing now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,132 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

It strikes me that they are now taking a more dynamic approach to it, despite sticking the government with a fixed set of data points in July. By the looks of things the vaccination rate now plays a far bigger role in the models.

Which I understand. However, where there's a will there's a way, and we have seen that in the last 18 months.Obviously there just isn't much of a will to sort the ICUs as it is somehow easier to impose restrictions on the entire country.Doesn't that say a lot??Maybe we should be applying more pressure on TDs that focus be on the hospital system as of now, rather than how the population are living their lives.

Pretty much every other prediction of his has been wrong.

I have to admit...my kids are young still and I am honestly very glad that I don't have to decide on vaccinating them with this right now.Mixed feelings.I am not a conspiracy theorist but when something is being pushed hard like this, it makes me question what is going on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,132 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

It's not their being wrong, it is that it is the only measure that the government uses to make decisions.

Some have been out but that may be the limitations of epidemiological modelling and what they include. It was wrong about October last year, Christmas and the level of this surge but it has been within a reasonable margin most of the time. 10-14 days will show if he is wrong here.

What kind of reaction did she have? Very vague details...

Also a bit strange that scientists and doctors will very bluntly say she can't get any vaccine as a result of it, usually it results in a case study and results in a solution that would allow her to take another vaccine as her second as per NIACs recent advice

Again the usual mantra of "just 2 more weeks". Restrictions need to lifted now and no more of this 2 more weeks BS.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,691 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

What is going on is that people smarter than you and me are pushing for a vaccination against a deadly disease that could overwhelm our hospital services... Pretty simple really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,033 ✭✭✭Russman

Yeah, most reasonable people understand this, but if he were to actually do that, this thread would be awash with claims that "......NPHET admit they don't know what they're doing bla, bla, bla, they're not fit for purpose disband them etc etc"

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 6,917 Mod ✭✭✭✭shesty

That poster may be referring to this..

A rare case I would imagine mind you.

By the way I am not against a vaccine in general, but such a concerted media campaign can make you wonder what is going on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,892 ✭✭✭the kelt

It depends on what they're pushing for, vaccinating kids who dont get sick and need hospital treatment doesnt stack up with the argument for not overwhelming hospitals

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,691 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

More vaccinations will eventually lead to fewer numbers, fewer hospitalizations and ICU numbers. Vaccinating kids is an attempt to stop the spread from kids to the vulnerable, it's fairly simple really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,157 ✭✭✭JDxtra

The vulnerable are already vaccinated. Vaccinated children can presumably (like adults) still catch and spread the virus. Children are (mostly) not impacted by the virus.

Unfortunately some people will succumb to the virus no matter what and we need to accept that. Situation will be no different than seasonal flu each year.

NPHET and the government are now targeting children as the enemy. It's sad to see.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,691 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

I don't know what crazy news sites you're following but nobody is targeting children as "the enemy" anybody under the age of 12 with an underlying condition is vulnerable but can't get a vaccine so your "the vulnerable are already vaccinated" comment is very clearly wrong

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,157 ✭✭✭JDxtra

The state has thrown all it's effort into pushing for vaccinating children 12+. One look at the headlines on the main stream media will tell you that. I don't read any other news sites or Twitter conspiracy theory pages. I'm just saying it as I see it. It's the same as travellers coming to Ireland were the previous enemy.

Unfortunately, there will always be some who for one reason or another can't take the vaccine or the vaccine is not effective. We should be proud of the percentage of the adult population we now have fully vaccinated. Applying pressure to squeeze even more out of the population in terms of vaccination numbers has diminishing returns. We need to accept this is about as good as it gets and open everything up and move on.

There's the other side to it as well that while they're vaccinating 12-18 year olds the 30-35s who got their first jab the 1st/2nd week of July are coming close to 2 weeks after their second jab in the coming days and as a result becoming fully protected
