We were in the middle of a pandemic this time last year too and there were no vaccines and we were allowed to dine indoors. So why arent unvaccinated people allowed to dine indoors this year. I tell you why because the cu@ts running the country are trying to force everyone to get the vaccine so they can get back to indoor dining or some sort of normality. Its a persons personal choice if they want to be vaccinated or not. No one should be told what to do. I have been vaccinated and i would have no problem sitting in a pub/restaurant with an unvaccinated person. I know several people who wont take the vaccine due to health reasons. Should these people be discriminated against and told no you cant dine indoors. No they shouldnt be

Last summer we were averaging 10-15 cases a day with less than 10 in hospital in July and about a hundred cases a day towards the end of August. Today's cases were 1491, 193 in hospital and 28 in ICU so it's not exactly comparable

This summer they've scrapped the €9 meal requirement (thank God) in favour of outdoors, they're allowing attendances at matches and concerts and even allowing indoors for vaccinated

We're in a far better position now than 12 months ago

Even allowing indoors for vaccinated, gosh how very daring of the rulers to allow this.

Indoor dining is back in the UK since May.!!!

Yeah i see there are full attendances at matches and loads of concerts happening. Definitely in a better position then last summer 🙄🤦‍♂️

They even let me drive when I haven't had drink in me, such daring!

The UK is led by an idiot so I wouldn't take what they've done as setting a good standard

What was the attendances at matches last summer do you recall? Somewhere in the region of 300?

We have copied everything the UK have done since the start of this.

Boris has the best scientific brains in the world advising him and he has the courage to lead, he isnt taking a salary and hiding behind an unelected group of public servants.

Life is getting back to normal in the UK, concerts, sports, theatres, pubs, night clubs, I dont see reports of the NHS collapsing.

You still cant even try on clothes in shops here, the virus loves new clothes!!!! Could you credit this.

They were predicting 7000 per day on average over July, August and September.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,890 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

We were before the UK in almost everything we did last year. The UK it's ahead of us now because their vaccine program was until very recently! The "best scientific brains in the world" as you mockingly call them advised a herd immunity approach last March... Probably not a good example of intelligence there

Life in the UK got back to "normal" one week ago and the NHS, for all its faults, is still a much stronger entity than the HSE and if you have been keeping up you'd see there is a delay between spreading events, numbers rising and hospitals being overwhelmed

Your comment about clothes is just plain stupid

Everyone...Literally everyone here except you and maybe two others said NPHET were talking balls with their modelling and projections.

    You bought it into it

    You were wrong

    Deal with it

If we are in a better position than last summer why arent concerts back on and increased attendences at all sporting events. Was at a club football championship match this evening where they allowed 200 people into a county grounds that holds over 13000 people.

I've seen a few references to Iceland with regard to their case numbers despite high vaccination levels.

For context, Iceland have had one Covid death since April.

Yeah, a much better position. Obviously you need to ignore becoming one of the most indebted nations on the planet and view everything through the prism of COVID cases.

Most debt per capita in Europe. But it doesn't affect most people at the moment so they don't give a hoot. The PUP and other cash is still rolling in so the mantra is everything is grand. But when the bill lands and it comes time to pay it in the form of higher taxes and even worse services, the pro-restrictions, pro-borrowing crowd will get a rude awakening.

What about all the other countries with indoor dining open for months, all run by idiots I suppose whilst we are the cleverest little boys in class!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,449 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

There's a weird vibe of Irish exceptionalism from some posters on this thread. Everyone else in Europe or around the world are total idiots and have no idea what they're doing. But here in Ireland we're fantastic and everything that's happening is the right thing to do, not like those idiot foreigners.

I presume that poster was being sarcastic...

Where can also be that pot of tea outside but each to their own rationalisation. It's certainly one I'd pass on.

You are wasting your time trying to explain that to most of the posters on here. They equally think the world is flat and the moon landing never happened lol

According to Paul Reid Ireland is to have the adult population fully vaccinated by the end of August or very early September which is fantastic news.

Couple that with the “back of the fag box” modelling of doom not coming to pass I presume all restrictions gone totally by mid September or so?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,136 ✭✭✭✭is_that_so

There will be a plan but that sounds a little bit soon in our environment of an abundance of caution. October may be more realistic IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,312 ✭✭✭paw patrol

you are correct, people also don't see that the EU has been printing money like mad since covid kicked in.

Your hard saved euro won't be worth a fcuk with the massive increase in money supply.

Your income will buy less unless you bag a pay rise.

but most people don't see that , they see free money and government assurances from people who will be off to a UN / EU gig in 5 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,312 ✭✭✭paw patrol

you would hope this - I hope this.

but given the controversy over the 200 guests outdoors and Tony preaching caution still.

    I just can't buy that.

Yesterday it was mid September but ok, it will be mid October before restrictions are lifted. Only 10 more weeks to flatten the curve!

But wait, is it wise to reopen fully going into the christmas period? After all, remember what happened last year! Think of all the cases and all the vulnerable who won't have had their winter booster shot yet, it would almost be a dereliction of duty to reopen in October.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,604 ✭✭✭Amadan Dubh

"Are you sure you want to go for your boozy Christmas dinner or your 12 pubs while granny stays at home waiting for her booster? If so, is it really worth your turkey or pints if granny has to be locked up for you to enjoy it?"

    That, or else;

"The flu is back and we know it affects not just older people but also younger people; with covid dying, unfortunately we have the flu picking up the slack in our hospitals to ensure that resources are at full capacity. We just need to #holdtight and #seethecourse as 2022 will be better #2022better #allinthistogether #hse #hselive"

It's quite simple: outside there's less risk, inside there's more risk and that applies whether it's a cup of tea or a five course meal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,716 ✭✭✭storker

One of the more curious aspects of this thread has always been that those who bitch and moan most about restrictions and lockdowns are also the first to cheerlead behaviours that are like to prolong the very things they whinge about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭Stormyteacup

Highly unlikely. Great news on vaccinations, but considering NPHET barely factored them into their modelling, and in light of CDC recommending masks indoors for the fully vaccinated, exiting Summer season, and slight but steady rise in hospitalisations/ICU, I don’t expect much more in easing of restrictions. Possibly higher capacity at events, offset by a requirement of proof of vaccination.

Interestingly the CDC is advising vulnerable people to consider not putting themselves in situations with increased risk of contracting Covid. Will our government advise same in time? Personally, at this stage, I think it’s madness to put the onus on every citizen and business to guarantee (with legal consequences) the safety of every vulnerable person in this country.

Awful sense of smugness off this post but it's a trend where you and others have recently taken to calling anyone who dares question our betters or questions ongoing restrictions with no end in sight as mad conspiracy theorists akin to moon hoaxers. Very strange behaviour but most likely explained by the fact that the pro-restrictions and pro-lockdowns crowd are running out of steam and slowly see the end is coming into sight and that most people around them are moving on with their lives as best they can. Perhaps there is anxiety about having to live in a post Covid world where NPHET and the government can no longer manage your daily risk appetite for you.
