He repeated his performance in Quigley Down Under and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves

How dare you slander Rickman's Bafta winning performance in RHPOT!! It's a work of art!

Say what you will about the camp inanity of Moore's era of Bond, some of their stunts were pretty crazy - and there's simply no way any studio would try something like the below these days. Easier to pass the storyboards to a CGI farm full of contractors, 1 month from release. I doubt if even the FAst & Furious series has done something like ... though nobody burst my bubble and tell me that was a model mind you :D

They computer modelled the angle of the bridge and the speed required, the car had a bigger engine and some other mods, they paid some random guy a few dollars to do the jump,

Yeah a British stuntman did the jump for about $50k

After watching Men in Black: International last a few weeks ago I looked up the Wiki for the franchise, including that one and the original film.

Interesting from that is the claim from its screenwriter Ed Solomon that it never turned a profit and a reference to Hollywood accounting which is a term I wasn't hugely familiar with. He didn't write any of the others. I've not seen 2 or 3. International was just rather inert and unmemorable.

Heard that Forrest Gump is another that did not turn a profit.

Shawshank Redemption director Frank Darabont settled with AMC over a dispute on profits owed from The Walking Dead after Darabont left around season 1. The director has walked away with 200 million dollars as a settlement!! Now that's a result. I wonder where the show might have gone had the film director stayed...

Not bad for 10 years of court cases.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

For sure. I didn't delve into the article TBH but I wonder does the settlement perhaps stipulate Darabont can no longer claim credit or renumeration for future Walking Dead material. For 200 million quid, I'd be fine with that. One wonders if he had a case then, had it continued.

Jesus, for 200 mil they could delete my name off the thing entirely. That's more money than he would have made if he'd actually stayed with the show.

For context, just checking and Shawshank made $28 million worldwide at the box office in 1994 (52 million apparently adjusted for inflation). Darabont and his family are set.

Yeah I'd imagine there was some sort all claims settled/don't sue us again waiver in there.

That button on the desktop site too but invisible. It's slightly to the left of "type your comment" in the comment box. I think it pops up at the bottom when editing posts too.

I don't see a thread but but had to comment; looks like the Space Jam sequel is giving folk ammunition for snark. I got a laugh out of the eagle-eyed viewer who spotted a nun from the infamous Ken Russell film, The Devils, in the background IP smorgasbord.

The editing is also apparently quite something, giving Bohemian Rhapsody a run for its money in giving armchair critics a headache

Folks, what's the craic with the IMAX in Blanchardstown? Is it the same as Parnell St, as in actually IMAX-lite?

There's no proper IMAX in Ireland - all IMAX-lite. Indeed, IFI is the only 70mm capable cinema in the country AFAIK.

Looks like Space Jam 2 is a turkey ,one of those $150m cost films that needs $300m to breakeven, and its banned in China , upwards of a $100m loss on the cards

Very disappointed to hear BBC have axed The Film Programme, probably one the best produced film shows and podcasts out there. Scorsese, Chris Nolan, Ken Loach and a 100 other filmmakers and actors have written an open letter asking BBC to reverse its decision.

Regé-Jean Page ( from Ride and Prejudice aka Bridgerton ) is to star in The Saint reboot, I find him a charisma vaccum, he was also linked to Bond

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

The Saint? Cos that's an IP bursting with eager fans. Had a Google, and looks like Paramount are the studio holding the keys - guess they need content for their own streaming service. Dexter Fletcher is attached to direct so presumably any spontaneous musical numbers will be well directed if nothing else 😄

I was thinking there was a reboot recently with Eliza Dushku. Looked it up and it was released in 2017 as a tv movie, but made in 2012/2013 when attempting to launch a new series.

And in imdb, that's actually Eliza's last acting credit.

Well this was a surprise; Dan Trachtenberg attached to ... ... ... a Waterworld show. Yes. That Waterworld.

I'm guilty of thinking that Waterworld is kinda great.

    Yes...that Waterworld.

I should have expanded. I have enjoyed Waterworld each time I saw it and doesn't entirely deserve its reputation. But that reputation is built from filming on water being a total unmitigated nightmare. And remains thus to this day so either Waterworld: The Show sets itself on land , goes CGI ( eww) or becomes another cautionary tale of shooting out at sea

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,544 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

True. The difficulties Spielberg had with 'Jaws' is legendary and I don't think he's touched the water since.

As for the show, I don't see where they can go with it. But, you're probably correct, it'll be CGI more than likely. Can't see a TV show basing itself entirely on the water. Either way, even if I like the film (although it's not great in fairness), I don't find myself with any great excitement for a TV show based in that world. Although, always happy to be proven wrong.

It's funny though. If you had pitched something like this just 10 years ago, you'd have been escorted out of the building before you finished the first sentence.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

True, it's the great IP gold rush of our times. Particularly the 90s flavour, now that that decade has become trendy.

What I will say is I'd have thought Snowpiercer couldn't work as a TV series and yet it became a solid favourite by season 2s end. Waterworld could work if handled right; maybe they'll angle it as a soggy Game of Thrones, competing atolls scheming for resources - which would limit the need for watery scenes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

Genuinely would not have recognised him at all, can't believe it's been nearly 20 years but I'm glad he's doing well.

IIRC he retired from acting to write novels; all naval based I believe. Was supposedly a very prickly man to work with, not one to put up with any nonsense from anyone.

The 100 was good for about 2.5 seasons IMO, from about the midway point of Season 1 to the end of Season 3. Season 2 being genuinely gripping TV and the show's high-point - but became a classic case of Network TV demanding the same hits over and over.

I suppose what Waterworld has in its favour is both a fairly unexplored apocalyptic premise, alongside a relatively narrow mythology - so lots of room to grow if the scripts are right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,673 ✭✭✭✭silverharp

it was really good, but it had the Space angle then fish out of water. If this show starts well into it then you could see it going pear shaped quicker.

    Hackman looks great for 91.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,544 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

I thought he simply looked his age.

Although I had no idea that he was 91. I thought he would have been younger than that.

Yeah he looks about how I'd imagine someone at 91. A lot of weight gone from his face, though he hasn't gone full skeletor ala Prince Philip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,323 ✭✭✭p to the e

Well in fairness he probably is a skeleton now

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,793 ✭✭✭FunLover18

Just to clarify, I don't think Hackman looks bad, just that he's aged so much and lost so much weight I didn't recognise him as Gene Hackman and still struggle to. But considering he's 91, it's great that he's still going. I hope I'm still able to go out for a cycle at his age.

Apple have bought Matthew Vaughn's new film Argylle for $200m.

Starring Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O'Hara, John Cena & Sam L Jackson.

The film, based on the soon-to-be-launched spy novel of the same name from author Ellie Conway, follows the world’s greatest spy as he is caught up in a globe-trotting adventure.

Variety tweeted this long ish piece some days ago. https://variety.com/2021/film/studio-execs/netflix-scott-stuber-steven-spielberg-1235028464/

Don't know this guy and wasn't aware Spielberg's deal - first sentence.

Not surprising that the theatrical window has shortened.

At Netflix, Stuber was offered complete greenlight authority. That meant he could move a pitch into production without needing the input of a committee of marketing or finance executives or requiring the signoff of corporate chiefs.

    ~

One blockbuster that won’t be getting a part two, however, is “6 Underground,” a $150 million Michael Bay and Ryan Reynolds film that Stuber confesses was something of a disappointment.

“We didn’t feel like we got there on that one creatively,” he says. “It was a nice hit, but at the end of the day we didn’t feel like we nailed the mark to justify coming back again. There just wasn’t that deep love for those characters or that world.”

    Honest, at least.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

TBH all Netflix's big swings with auteurs have been failures IMO, often stinking of blank cheques with no creative oversight. Baggy messes from Bay, Scorcese, Fincher, Synder, Coens and so on. Symptomatic of their shotgun, 20 million releases a week, and desperation for an Oscar. 6 Underground was a f#cking terrible film that stank of a director given no limits or constraints - which in Bay's case meant something bordering on offensive.

Came upon it purely by happenstance, and well. I really shouldn't be surprised; the Christian Movie Industry seems ridden with victim-complex storylines, though mixing it with CoVid conspiracy appears to be a swerve. There's obviously a market for filler like the below, God's Not Dead or Left Behind (which IIRC managed to persuade Nicholas Cage to star).

It is the year 2025: Since the outbreak of the Corona virus in 2020, the world has not been the same: A communist system with a single world government has been established, English has been chosen as the world language, contacts have been reduced to a minimum. Christianity has been banned completely; the constitution how we knew it no longer exists. In Germany, a small group of young Christians start an underground revolution to reunite Christians and regain freedom.
