I've heard on the NBC commentary. But hadn't realised he has left RTE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,748 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

Not a fan, but that's a bit unfair. One of the lads is working as a QA for Amazon. Not dole for him.

“even though you’ve been complaining about how bad life is in the inner city yet you still want a free gaff there handed out to you”

I must of missed that part.

No idea what they were on BOC or what there podcast is about? All a bit pointless.

I haven't heard the name Terrence in a long time. Did John Creddon have a character called Terrence at one point? "Its a lot like liiifffffffeeeee" Wasn't that his catchphrase or am I getting him confused with someone else?

And RTE wonder why they are in serious financial trouble, when BOC is 'worth' a quarter of a million a year.

Per hours 'work' Ballsy is the best paid in rte?

I've always thought that one of the benefits of paying Tubs and BOC so much. Is that it distracted how much every one else in RTE is earning. RTE employs about 1800 people. Of that 1800, 24 earn between 100k and 150k. That is base pay, before any bonuses or commission or what ever. 98 people earn between 100k - 100k. And a further 170 earning between 75k and 100k.

None of these are "talent" since all of the talent are contractors

Who are the 24, what are they doing to warrant that much. Why are RTE over paying so many people. I appreciate that some of the jobs are technical and highly skilled. Department heads are highly skilled and demand a high wage. Sales people will obviously be high earners. But none of the figures contain bonuses or commissions.

A lot of the content gets farmed out to production companies. So it is not as if they are paying for top tier directors or production staff.

    Who is making 100k?

Is it the lighting and sound guys on The Late Late. Someone in HR, the accounts department? Who?

I dont know how to edit my post. But the reason they are in financial trouble is that they are over paying people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,388 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Yet they continue to tell us that they pay their 'talent' accordingly.

It is run like a business that knows it will never be allowed to fail, and thats why the tough decisions are never taken.

They are absolutely overpaying the talent. But the talent is a distraction. They are over paying everyone (at least at the top). And no one is talking about it. What are the 300 people making over 75k a year before bonuses and commission doing? Who are they? What do there jobs entail?

When Anthony Staines mentioned other health conditions today, Brendan jumped straight in with his "what health conditions " question. Is it a condition of going on the show that you have to be willing to share personal medical information?

Nothing unusual about a national broadcaster having a team at the Olympics, and nothing unusual about them working shirts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,748 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

I felt a bit uncomfortable about that as well. He mentioned underlying conditions. I don't think he was expecting to be speaking about getting a liver transplant on the today's show. Mad for the misery porn.

    No, correct there.

Jaqui Hurley mentioned the “lads in the office” today, going to see the golf .

Lads in the office, what office, what lads……….😯.

What the fuuherke is this all aboot?

Ah now, that was before he was full time on The Marian Finucane Show, still trying to figure out what he did in 2019 other than fill in, was The Cutting Edge still going?

I couldn’t believe that he asked that question - it’s really nobody’s goddam business.

You're absolutely right, though it is fairly standard practice on RTE and most other media outlets in fairness.

Put any person with a disability on for interview, and the first question is a version of 'What's wrong with ya' - sometimes slightly more nuanced than that, sometimes not.

Re: Terrence, yeah John Creedon used to do him on the Gerry Ryan show in the late 80s. Under the Terrence persona he released a cover of Que Sera Sera as a single, became popular with the Irish fans at Euro 88. At first he was just a voice on the radio but then he started appearing in the RTE Guide wearing nerdy glasses. I think it kind of killed the mystery around him as up to that you didn't know what he looked like. Not sure what point he stopped doing him but I remember an article in RTE Guide where it said he had a "girlfriend" and showed him with a girl wearing nerdy glasses. Think the character was retired soon after or fizzled out.

No way?? Are you serious? What an absolute waste of €250K. His annual fee should be cut to €50K as of and from next week.

No wonder so called Ballsy has lost his balls and not wont to rock any boats.

I didn’t catch today’s show, but it speaks volumes that there are no comments on this forum at the end of the week it’s been

I didn't catch it either but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it was pure covid chat and analysis of what the hospitality industry is permitted to do, their pals involved in the concert promotion game and a doomsday prediction due to the rising cases recently.

I guess it also says something that we didn’t bother ourselves to listen to it, as well. 😀

I heard a bit ay the beginning.

Derval McDonald interviewing Amanda Knox about a blog or a book or something. Hard on the ears. I turned it off.

I didn't listen either, and won't. I personally find it very boring and predictable, and yer man the presenter doesn't have a voice for radio either.

Anyway, I just had a look at the topics covered in the playback on the app.

    Amanda Knox

    Olympics part one

    Olympics part two

Lucy Kellaway and her life changing book. Who now?

Richie Sadlier, in the obligatory mental health segment and his new sexual health modules for Secondary pupils, jayzis.

    Olympics part three, update.

    Electric cars.

Don't mind the lauding of Kellie H but the rest is pure yawn, yawn yawn.

Derval is in for him for a couple of weeks, might give a listen today

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,761 ✭✭✭Pelvis Parsley

She's not too bad, herself and Kellie Harrington were nearly in tears earlier.

It was on in in the background yesterday-she suffers a little from the usual Radio Telefis Interruptus style of discourse, but she's no Mary Wilson in that regard, thankfully.

I think Dearbhail is a million times better than Brendan, she has her research done, she's bright and intelligent. Overall I feel like the show is dumbed down radically since Brendan took over. You can hear his relief when the politics section is over on Sunday and he can sit back and listen to others talk about what's on the telly. He just doesn't have an agile enough mind to handle the job and the truth is the whole national discourse will suffer for it because its the one point in the week where people are off and can passively catch up on what's going on in the country newswise. Without the engagement of the public p politicians can get away with anything.

Feel she is a bit too ‘gushing’ for me.

Lot of so called ‘journalists’ and pseudo influencer types on it.

Comes from the ‘everyone is fabulous ‘ school of broadcasting. The Kathryn Thomas kind.

I don’t like those sort of presenters too much.
