Contrary to what some say, "black holes" do exist, where.......... in Ireland..............at least when it comes to international shipping.

Seems more people are going to amazon.de, uk site is pretty useless now where shipping is concerned for lots of items.

    Beam me up Scotty...............

I dunno whats going on tbh, it cannot go on like this i reckon. Shortages in the shops, sellers in the UK, europe and elsewhere not wanting to know us. Tried to buy a pair of shoes earlier in the week, and was told by the assistant that are getting in very little, not what they order, no regular deliveries etc. A woman in Dealz told me the same

Everything is more expensive, and will now get even more so. Mehole would want to get his overpaid backside on a plane to Brussels and get it sorted out.

While not a solution for all of our problems, I've found Tannyoky well worth a visit.

Obviously, much depends on how far away from the border you live...

If you put a call in to them, they'll get you just about anything that you might need, if its not already in stock.

Banbridge Outlet Mall and Newry are both fairly close, so there's options as to where to drop off the Mrs, or fill the rest of the car with cheap clothes, food and beer, before you head home.

I havent tried it yet, but someone else here mentioned importing ammo recently, said it was fairly straight forward, and that there was a saving to be made.

    Thanks,

    G.

Is Northern Ireland treated same as coming from the UK?, Will there be same vat and handling fee charges?

  • Registered Users Posts: 438 ✭✭Brian2011

If I buy something from Amazon UK that is fulfilled by Amazon or where it says "Sold by and dispatched from Amazon", does that mean I don't also have to pay Irish Vat and handling fee?

NI is operating under EU customs regulations

Good news if you buy from aliexpress, customs will be sorted out by them so it looks like there will be no extra charges:

Amazon will deduct the UK VAT and add the Irish VAT etc. at the checkout. BUT I now see that returns are going back to the UK with only a maximum £9 postage cover, looks like you have to pay the extra postage.

I have a return going back today so I'll see if I must pay extra postage.

Pretty sure if you say the product is fault/not as advertised etc you don't have to pay the return at all and they give you pre paid label

I tried all the options but it was still the same result. And I couldn't get on to the 'Chat' line only bought me back to the home page. I must try again.

So I ordered a 10 pack of breech flags because i'm always looking for the couple I have.

Total cost of goods €14.35 duty charges an extra €6.79. So I've spend over a score on a few bits of plastic, great.

That must be close to the price they are here? €2 each?

Bought a hundred from the states a few years back for €37 all in. Had so many I handed them out like sweets.

Bought some stuff off Amazon.de (Germany). Paid €10.47 total to include VAT of €1.96. Notified by An Post to pay €3.02 VAT and €3.50 service charge. Post office staff useless, An Post customer services will not answer phone, and their chat-bot does not recognise custom charges. Customs and Revenue say it is not their problem. This is some **** little backward country.

Why did you have to contact An Post to pay for VAT when it came from another EU country(Amazon Germany)?

You need to pay attention to where the seller is based. Amazon could be german yet if the seller is based and item shipped from outside the EU then you will be charged.

A similar thing happened to me but my item was shipped from China. Value was 9.71 and I was charged tax of 2.23 so paid total of 11.94. However today I got email saying that value is 13.57 and I should pay 3.12 tax plus 3.50 Anpost processing fee. No way to appeal or submit receipts or to show what you paid and what tax was already charged. Nice little racket for anpost considering amount of stuff coming in from outside EU. To get 3.50 for every one of them is dream come true.

Got charged 8 euro today , customs charge for a package from England worth 20 euro .The delivery charge was 14 euro. So altogether 22 euros for it to be delivered, f ing joke. Wasn't as if it came front the other side of the world.

Is this the way of it from now on?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,467 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

Cost of item was 20? Shipping 14? So total cost is 34 and VAT at 23% is 7.82 (€8 is rounding up).

Custom charges don't, or shouldn't apply to goods under €150 accoridng to revenue's site.

But now england is outside the eu hence the customs charge. 8 euro 29 cent to be exact.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,467 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

Thats not custom's charge. Customs is a generic term we all use, but to be precise it means a separate charge other than VAT. IOW its a charge of its own but only applies to goods over a certain value.

    VAT is 23%

    Customs is 12%.

    From the Revenue.ie website:

If your goods have an intrinsic value (the value of the goods alone excluding transport, insurance and handling charges) of more than €150 you will have to pay Customs Duty.

Your goods were under the €150 threshold so you only paid VAT on the goods and transport.

FYI from today. Order from Optics Warehouse UK.

    Order Value E221.84

    import Duty E9.39

    VAT E53.17

    an Post Fee E3.50

    Total payable E66.06

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,514 ✭✭✭Billcarson

The product i bought from the UK was not produced in the UK but was originally produced in Italy. Is that the reason for the charge?

I ordered stuff before from the same UK site and this was the first time I have paid for any additional charges.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,467 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

From what I've read if the item comes in through the UK we get hit with the charges, which is crap.

Its forced me to start looking for EU or direct suppliers and bypassing the UK as much as possible. Sometimes though, even with charges, the UK works out cheaper so I still buy.

Ordered something from ebay uk. Total charge was £15.86

    VAT +2.99

    Anpost fee +3.50

That anpost fee is ridiculous. One government entity is charging you to pay another government entity. I wonder why is not the amount added to purchase price and sent to the customs by ebay. It seems to be working the other way as every time when I sell something to UK then VAT is added to the total buyer pays.

    UPS is worse.

Standard brokerage fee from them of 18.50, plus customs & vat, COD or call to pay with card.

An Post/Revenue/EU money grab is all over the shop.

Ordered some stuff to repair a US stove here. Total for three 4 meter bits of asbestos door liner inc 40 bog std pop rivets and a meter long sacrificial anode rod $35.

Shipping to Ireland $55.No choice, but to get it as this model stove does not exist outside the USA and was a special import by a US Expat. Customs charge in Ireland 35 euros.

Delivered no problem last Monday, get the following day the new customs notification form. Paraphrased "We are holding your stuff to ransom! Pay us the ransom sum below or we'll send it back within 14 days Thanks ! The Irish revenue"

Well, lads, seeing that I already have my parcel, you can wait now for your money and you can send back the parcel you already sent me...Thanks..Grizzly
