Was there a directive from race control for no overtaking in turns 9 and 10 though? It was mentioned in comms in relation to Hamilton flying past everyone last week

Don't really see where Vettel can go there if that's the case
It's on the team to make him aware.

Looks like Bottas overtook Vettel then slowed right down, Vettel then had no choice but to back off, and both he and his team were caught out by this leading Alonso to come up on him when he had nowhere to go.

Mazepin got a lot of bad press for queue jumping a few races ago, then Hamilton did it last week and nobody seemed to complain so this week you had both Mercs and both Red Bulls get in on it, which ultimately destroyed qualifying for both Vettel and Alonso. They need to properly sort this out, as long as you have these short sessions and tyres that need such careful preparation we’re going to have more problems.
Bottas was ahead of Perez and Vettel according to the driver tracker. He left a far bigger gap than anyone else it looks like, maybe they can put the blame on him.

Bottas and Perez both overtook Vettel according to reports, the Bottas overtake was slightly before that driver tracker footage kicked on.

I agree that it’s on the team to make him aware, they were obviously taken by surprise by the enormous closing speed of Alonso though as Vettel was forced to take the last two corners much more slowly than planned.

Not surprising but still harsh. He slowed down to make space between turn 8 and 9, as was the agreement in the preface driver briefing. But when he did this a bunch of cars overtook him, then they slowed down between turn 9 and 10, despite there being a directive not to slow down between those corners. This pushed Vettel back as he had to slow down behind them, which pushed him into the path of Alonso with nowhere to go - he moved out of the way as soon as he possibly could, sacrificing his own lap in the process, but it was too late.

Feels very much like Vettel was basically punished for being the only one who acted properly, but then that’s F1 sometimes. None of this helps Alonso of course.

Lets not forget that Lando started 3rd last time out and got swallowed up by Bottas and Perez early on. I think the McLaren isn't going to just magic up race pace out of nowhere.

Fair sure he just let them pass, iirc the commentator mentioned it wouldn't be mcclarens race as they were racing the ferrari's and wanted to run their own race re tyres. Wonder will they give it a go tomorrow?

He didn’t fight it, but only because he knew they’d inevitably get past anyway. I doubt his pace deficit to the Mercedes and Red Bull will be any different tomorrow, but he might be more willing to fight as you’ve got to think he has a big margin over the Ferraris and the rest so he can afford to fight a bit.

Zero point in Norris fighting the Mercs early on.

Agreed, it's a pointless waste of rubber and risking worse.

Is there any reason 1 stop seems to be default tomorrow? 2 looked as quick last time and the tyres are a step softer this week.

Is that what they are saying? I'd be surprised as it's softer tyres this week. I would have thought the front runners starting on mediums would be taking two sets of hards at stops.

That was a great qualifying session. Set up nicely fir a good start to the race tomorrow at least. Would love to see Lando on the podium. Ricciardos head must be spinning. He must be wondering what is it Norris is doing that he is not.
Well done to George Russel too great to see William's and Russel doing well. If they keep improving sure why would he need to leave the team. Still I suppose going to Mercedes could be tempting even if they are mot winning or getting poles all the time anymore.
A pity about Alonsos lap been ruined but then if he had got into Q3 George Russel might not have. Can't have it all.
I think it is great how close they all are now. I wonder will it still be like this at the rest of the seasons tracks. Will just have to wait and see.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

It definitely has to be a two stopper, especially if the track is hot. If it's raining at any stage, then we know we are in for a real treat.

Its raining in Spielberg this morning and there is more forecast for this afternoon at around 3pm local time

The 2 Alpha Tauri's being right behind the 2 Mercs could also be in play. If they can keep up with at least 1 of the Mercs early on they might force Mercs hand on strategy here too

Seems like two stopper, especially when looking at the unused tyre allocation. E.g quickest two stopper medium hard hard. Max, Mercedes have two hard unused tyres. Not Perez btw

The start should definitely be interesting with the slightly unusual arrangement (no mercs on the front row etc)

They’ll put Perez the tyre whisperer on a one-stopper, hoping he can hold up the Mercs.

Can't see it, they are on soft tyres and I think they will drop off on pace within the first few laps.

Looking at the weather radar, there's definitely a build up of rain occurring to the west and could move in towards Spielberg shortly.

Both Bergfex and Ventusky are showing no rain for the next 3 hours around the track. Might get a couple of spots, but nothing that would merit a tyre change.

Sky saying there’s spots of rain at the moment and a 40% chance of rain for the race, but teams aren’t anticipating inters or wets.

Russell having a spot of bother again, saying the rear of the car is 100% not right.

Looks like they will have a look at it on the grid.

Russell on the radio after his lap to grid, "something definitely not right with the rear of the car"

Timo Werner on the grid. I just called you a Goalkeeper when you are clearly a striker.

Maybe she heard he stops balls hitting the back of the net :pac:

Just tuned in and caught the last few seconds of the anthem. Cringe.

I liked it. It was different to same boring old anthem.

Lando looks pretty calm, only wants to go one way he says.

The graphic said he is the only driver to score points in every race this season, that is a pretty impressive stat - hopefully it continues today.

Safety car for that? And out immediately, not like when Max was all over the start finish straight in Baku. Jesus do they just make the standards up as they go along or what. I miss Charlie Whiting
