Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

In great condition that. It's a pity do that the revamped version both inside and out never looked as nice as the pre revamp version. A great car for the price do at least it looks it as long as it has been looked after and not in any crashes.
My parents came close to buying one but the salesman was terrible.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Such a bizarre facelift. Ruined it. Wasn't a bad looking boredom-box beforehand.

I’d say if you bought that and drove it as Far East as you could before you reached China by road, you’d easily quadruple your investment and have a free air fare home from Mongolia.

I prefer the facelifted one- it looks more aggressive!!
The charisma was one of those utterly anonymous but faithful cars- they were quite popular in Ireland

They were. There was a load of 03 ones with WD reg's that came in around 2008.

I like them more now than I did then. Funny that. :)

Was just looking up cars for sale in France as I'll be working there for a year. The prices (and valuations)are almost the opposite than here!
The old cars are expensive and the new cars are cheap.
My 05 corsa that I have here would be around 700 euros...in France its at least 3 times the price @2100.
And new cars are like 20% cheaper over there!

There's the odd LHD car for sale here at times. Why not scope out bringing one over with you and making a few quid?

2004 Mazda 2, fresh NCT till 02/22. Thoroughly decent runaround at a price of €500 and likely some wiggle room too. Wouldn't work as a first car due to age but even so. At this price point, small and Japanese is the way to go.

The real true meaning of trade sale implies that the car is to be sold within the motor trade. i.e. the buyer, be it an individual or another garage works in the motor trade. There is a good clue in the name.

Many moons ago when I was a young chap looking at a car on a forecourt the old school salesman told me he wouldn't show me the car as it was a trade sale. I good gladly look at any of the other cars on the forecourt apart from that corner.

In more recent years a trade sale in terms of a motor vehicle is as mentioned generally taken to mean sold as seen, no warranty etc. - pretty much to whoever wants to buy whether or not they operate within the motor trade.

Would ye think that the 342k miles put off many joe soaps from buying that Octavia?

I'm referring to the Irish mentality that some people wrongly think that something with 200k miles is ready for the scrapyard.

I'd say you could put up another 160k+ miles on that Octavia easily.

That octavia was bought a few months ago. The previous owner had it years. And it seemed well minded.

Duke o smiley posted it in the bangernomics thread at 800 I think. it eventually price dropped to 500 and was marked sold after about a week at that.

    Could be a grand buy.

100,000 kilometres would put a lot of folk off a car

I recall seen a video on Youtube some time back now of two identical engine's that were taken apart. One in a car with 65,000 miles that was serviced poorly if hardly at all and one with 165,000 miles that was serviced and maintained very well. The internals of the engine with 65,000 miles looked horrendous compared to that of the engine with 165,000 miles on it which seemed to have more wear on the components.

Your probably right, that kind of mileage would totally put off your average joe soap but at the end of the day its a €500 car with almost a years NCT....Things sometimes need to be put in perspective too. If money was tight and I needed a bit of a workhorse to keep me going a while and car generally checked out ok on a once over I certainly would.

The other side of it is that its important to remember that there are other mechanical ancillaries that are seldom serviced/ replaced in the normal course of events and subject to wear and tear from more use too, such as alternator's, starter motors, power steering pumps, wiper motors, gearboxes (often not serviced even by those who keep on top of their servicing better than others). Horses for courses, if the outlay was much bigger and the mileage was colossal I'd probably be less likely to take a chance unless the money was right accordingly to persuade me to take that chance. Depends on the car too, some can simply take the mileage better than others all other factors being equal. I don't like this mentality though that a car is automatically scrap after X miles. That's too broad and sweeping a generalisation.

Depending of the car, time itself and age can be the issue. Done alot of expensive repairs on my own car over the last year on engine plastics and seals which degraded. Things like crankshaft seals and other brittle plastics. More of an issue with some cars compared to others though.

Except for it being petrol not diesel and only having 4 weeks NCT. Straight bodywork and not a terrible looking car but I don't think it's even worth €400 tbh.

€350 gets it, in the comments, lower yet.

    3 months NCT. 25th September.

Less grief with an old petrol than an 06 diesel. perfect spare car.

Soft spot for them too. Like a Xedos.
