Personally my gut feeling is hosting the euro matches was “not worth” the risk and especially with ireland not qualifying.

Need to show that "abundance of caution".

Don’t blame it on the sunshine
    Don’t blame it on moonlight
Don’t blame on the good times
    Blame it on the Tony

While ye all froth at your bogeyman, the real world is getting on with things and getting moving again. There is no mass exodus. There are lots of people getting back to work, tax take is robust and the multinational sector is looking at us as the country that kept supply chains of vital medical products moving throughout the pandemic

    Blame it on the raind

So had Ireland qualified for a football tournament the risk would be worth it??

Bizarre thinking. Either you believe it’s a danger to public health and shouldn’t go ahead, or it’s an event that carries a small risk but can be staged with risk-mitigation measures.

Those in charge chose the former out of an abundance of caution - as much as I have lost all faith in the rational thinking of authorities here, I sincerely hope their decision would not have been different on account of potentially winning a football trophy.

Government did get very lucky though that we didnt qualify for Euro 2020, were able to pass off the hosting duties without much hassle.

I know they did a few test events tonight in the league of Ireland which is fine, any tiney tiny positive step is good but i just dont know what they were actually testing! There was no covid testing, no food or drink, no apps to show negative test on arrival, no mixing of people of note.. what is the test here? to ensure a stadium with 10% with barely 1000 fans spread across a big stadium doesnt cause a complete meltdown? apart from maybe staggered entry and exits its just a few people sittibg around in a stadium with masks, i just don't see what more they can learn when there is already a massive sporting events both indoor and outdoor taking place around europe, surely people see these test events are just pointless tick box exercises.

same with that awful looking concert the other night. what did we actually learn! 500 odd people in small group outdoors who dont interact with each other does not cause meltdown. looking at any park around dublin on a sunny is similar setting, just more people and no marking the play pen things they have to have stay in!

If there was a test event in europe and it went bad no doubt Rte\government\nphet would be all over it to let us know of the dangers but anything that in europe that works out fine is just ignored

Yeah - I don’t get what they learn from these test events? Yes, we can have a concert with 500 people, but we need to spend a few days and a few hundred man hours to set it up, we need people to stand in pods. If this works well we can open the 3 arena next week!

All essential a pr exercise by the government, there is more than 500 people in the iveagh gardens every summer's day ffs. No antigen testing etc but sure didn't it allow a few goverment lapdogs a nice evening out !

Euro 2020, a football tournament where people watch games for a month without giving a flying f*ck where the game was. Any Irish people who were not in Genoa of Stuttgart learn anything at all about those cities from the fact that we played tournament matches there?

Probably the must stupid post I have read here...

Probably the must stupid post I have read here...

Not the “lunch in the bookies”? Or the “informed sources saying dining was being pushed to august at the earliest” the day before it was announced for the start of July. Because those were some doozies.

And there is absolutely nothing in my post that is not true.

Yes you could have lunch in the bookies when outdoor dining was closed...no problem. We will see about indoor dining.

Saying no one cares where the matches are played is stupidity of the highest order and is basically defending your beloved nphet, government with no justification. Riddle me this then if no one cares why do countries bid for them in the first place then ? It's because your nation gets exposure to mass international audiences sometime our risk adverse shower couldn't take a chance on. We are the only country not to do it so defend gov, nphet all you want but they made a Balls of it.
Sure you probably thought the iveagh gardens was a worthwhile exercise!

The ship has long sailed but personal think the Euro games should have gone ahead here but without travelling fans. Would have been great for football fans to see live international matches and also given any ex pats from the playing countries a chance to watch their teams.

But given our authorities over cautious approach, I'm glad they cancelled when they did. Imagine allowing 500 fans into the Aviva and passing it off as an event, would be comical and then foreign nations, really would be laughing at us.

Perhaps if they insisted that all the fans at the games had to have €9 substantial meals at the game the euro matches could have went ahead here with no problems.

and adhere to the 95 minutes rule would of made it a lot safer.

Headlines are grim today - Stobart air gone, I hope the ‘close the borders’ people are happy with our ever decreasing travel options for the future. And 100,000 children on hospital waiting lists. But let’s just worry about variants of variants, we have our priorities right.

    UEFA pulled the plug.

If we only allowed 500, we would still have to pay UEFA for 12,000.

Or do think UEFA cares about actual fans attending the matches? :pac:

These people don't care about other issues. I'm convinced some would love another lockdown

I’m sure Stuttgart or Lille or Genoa or ibaraki got loads of Irish tourists after hosting our games.

And you are doubling down on the bookies again I see. Hint for you - just because the management may have turned a blind eye doesn’t mean it was allowed

Have you seen all the airline job loses in the US?

You obviously need a lesson in basic advertising and how to promote your country... sure why bid for the rights to host them ?

I don't think you frequent a bookies pal so comment on something you know about. Just a hint for you

I know that dining indoors is not and was not permitted in a bookies. The fact that a proven bullsh*t artist says it was is immaterial

Only because our over cautious authorities couldn't commit to guaranteeing an even reduced capacity event. At this stage we all know where the risks are, and its not open air events.

Oh I am so offended to be called a bull****ter on an anonymous internet forum . Grow up and address the question.... Why bid for the euros if there is no benefit as you claim ? No bull**** answers either

Yourself and a few others can't answer the question so play the man. Childish

They really couldn't organise a piss up

Last country in the world to open outdoor dining ....
Only country not using antigen testing for pilot events .....

Only country to refuse the euros...

Sure everyone else is wrong and our great leaders, nphet are right !

We don't live in the U.S, plus demand is back to 2019 levels over there.

Major international events are bid for for the prestige and short term economic gain but by and large lose money. Not prioritising a football tournament that your team is not involved in is not in any way strange. In fact the only places hosting matches who don’t have a team involved are quasi autocratic regimes with leaders intent on creating some sort of leader cult

"Quasi autocratic regimes with leaders intent on creating some sort of leader cult" didn't know nphet were in other countries ?

Of course they lose money short-term but long term it is incalculable in advertising for your country.
do you not think having a "wild Atlantic way" or "ancient east" advertisement to an enormous worldwide audience is beneficial ?

2 billion watched the last euros ffs

It was another stupid decision by the gov, nphet but to be expected

Remember when Ireland hosted the Tour de France. Was that a waste of time and money? They improved the roads in preparation for it, and it was a 3 day advertisement for our country's landscape.

On a side note, I find it staggering that some pro-restrictions posters feel the need to reply to every single post. It's like they are trying to fight a tidal wave or something, knowing deep down, the game is nearly up, and they are slowly becoming the minority in this country. It must be exhausting. Go out and enjoy the good weather.

Well I’m off to get my vaccine shortly which is what is really going to end this, not some half baked rants based on nothing but wishful thinking and disinformation.
