Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Could you try to find a petrol one... you’d surely never spent 5500 on petrol.

No matter what I do I can't get the right figure for a 2009 BMW 335i wagon on the revenue site, it only gives option for saloons and manual.

Looking to get it from Japan.
    2009 e91 335i
    95km
    Auto (obviously)

Can anyone give me a rough estimate on what I'd be handing over to revenue when landed?

quick question - if I go to my vrt appointment and the amount is crazy, can I change my mind and take car back north & sell it ?

Check the CO2 emissions on it and then use the correct VRT rate against your invoice price for a rough idea, and then add 1000 to be safe.

If it's not currently on the VRT system, it goes for review and they come back with a price in a few weeks.

VRT rate and invoice price have nothing to do with each other?

Hoping someone can confirm if I am calculating this correctly. I used the online VRT calculator and it gave me these figures
    Registration Tax Total
    CO2 VRT Charges
    €3,810
    NOx VRT Charge
    €1,500
    Vehicle Registration Tax
    (payable on enquiry)
    €5,310

    The car in question is
    https://www.usedcarsni.com/2018-Mercedes-Benz-GLA-GLA-200d-Sport-Premium-Plus-5dr-Auto-281386620?make=16&model=128053237&search_type=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpdqDBhCSARIsAEUJ0hO670iSqYn_RoMKi3m_CW2pb0tdHkRnlI8LdgZMARn3krW7orMdgRgaAuveEALw_wcB&pagepc0=2

On their site it is quoting the NOx tax at 440 euro.

Am I missing something. The g/km amount I entered was .108.

    Revenue NOx Estimate
    NOx Emissions
    0.108
    NOx Units
    g/km or g/kWh
    NOx VRT Charge
    (payable on enquiry)
    €1,500

    Thanks

The 108 figure is the Co2 Emissions not the NOX figure.
NOX on that is something around the 0.60 mark.

Got my deposit down on a 2018 auris hybrid, 11k gbp vrt 2100 euro. I don't think I done too bad 2018 auris 16k miles for just over 14,500 euro. I can't find one down here with that mileage not to mind price. They are averaging between 18 to 19,500 with higher mileage.
How does manufacturers warranty work down here if cars bought in North. Dealer told me I need bring it back up but I mailed Toyota customer care and he said warranty is valid in South but its a 3 year not a 5 year like they have in North?

Thanks BTW read through the thread great top and advice

Thanks MGN. I entered the amount you suggested 0.60 and it gave similar amount to advertised. Where do you get the NOx on cars as most sites just give CO2

As a result of NOx, its seems that importing diesel cars is all but dead if not for the top spec 525d ish BMWs. Petrol will have some value and will look to last for a while. I recently seen a very nice mitsubishi lancer 2.0l d (same engine used in golf/audi) for a reasonable price and milage. 3000 for a full service history and top spec. But alas 4000 in VRT+NOx making importation unreasonable. While a f**King mazda rx8, which pollutes C02 to high he an is €925 Vrt+Nox. The cars are worth the same initially around 3000 but NOx makes the mitsubishi along with pretty much all diesels really a stupid choice to import. Will there every be a change in VRT with imports or new cars here that remains to be seen but surely examples like this need to be looked at not all diesel cars are that bad and if a high power petrol car is cheaper to import it should be cheaper to tax and vice versa for dielsel. (Budget 2021 might be the final nail in the coffin)

Nox is old news now and 2015+ diesels all have very low Nox

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 456 ✭✭brian_gall85

Yep, anything with a Euro 6 diesel engine is peanuts in the grand scheme of things.

From looking through the posts here it seems you can only bring in 2016+ if looking at Audi/BMW 2.0L diesels for example? From what I've checked there's not much savings to be had unless I'm seriously over calculating the VRT/Nox?

    Plus VAT and customs charges.

I would imagine the revenue would estimate the value as the same as a saloon, after all, the saloon/estate e9x cost roughly the same
Add on vat+import duties as it's from outside the EU
And remember Irish insurance companies don't like insuring cars that were sold new outside the EU, so there will be a loading for that too

Just been talking to a dealer in Norther Ireland. He has a car I am interested in.
Its English registered though, not Norther Ireland.

He told me he can prove he brought it into the country before Jan 1st and therefore it is not liable for VAT and customs duty.
The rule states that the car must have been registered in Northern Ireland before January 1st 2021, to avoid VAT and Customs Duty.
He said it is registered in the trade.

Anyone know if I am still liable for VAT and Import Duty if I purchase?

If you can prove it was in NI before Brexit then its VRT only

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 340 ✭✭Mintoe

Neighbour of mine bought uk Reg jag from ni dealers few weeks ago and dealer gave them proof it was imported into ni in November 20 and they only had to pay vrt & small nox charge

NI dealers must have imported a ton of stuff before the end of 2020.
Checked a few there for sale in NI and they're un-taxed since Nov '20

Just an update for anyone interested.

My registration process was not completed yesterday in the NCT centre as they would not accept the invoice from the transport company as proof the car entered NI prior to Jan 1 2021.
    Despite it being a completely legit invoice on company headed paper showing all relevant details;
Date, Car details, truck drivers name, collection address, delivery address, sailing time, sailing operator, sailing reference and company stamp.

The guy in the the NCT said revenue wouldn't accept it even though it is clearly stated on the nct website as valid proof. I asked him had he been in touch with revenue and he said he had. I found that hard to believe as he had my paperwork for approx 6 minutes!
He said a hand written invoice would not be accepted. So I said grand I'll get them to type one up and he then changed tack and said revenue would't accept it all all.
When I pointed out it said on the NCT website that it was listed as valid proof he shrugged his shoulders and said he doesn't make the rules and to take it up with revenue.
I found the whole thing very strange to be honest.

Why would it say its an acceptable form of proof that the car has entered NI prior to Jan 1st 2021 if its not acceptable?

Anyway, he told me the invoice between the dealer from where he bought the car should get it over the line. So I am getting that this morning and I am re-booked for Friday.

It all seems a bit haphazard and as much down to the guy doing the inspections discretion as any rules which is not the way it should be.

list of nox values per car.

I have a NOX query if anyone can answer...

Looking at a car up North and I got a NOX figure online of 146 mg/km.

Putting this into the Revenue VRT calculator gives a NOX charge of €2450.

Now I have seen the V5 and the NOX figure on it is 0.014 g/km.

Putting this into the Revenue calculator gives a NOX charge of €70.

Presume this is just an error on the VRT calculator?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,944 ✭✭✭Bigus

    Hint 146 milligram/km = .00146 GRAMS /km

units my friend , first rule of anything scientific, define your units.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,803 ✭✭✭lintdrummer

Is 146 mg/km not 0.146 g/km? Which would explain my discrepancy. 0.014 g/km as per V5 would equate to 14 mg/km. That seems like a low number for a 2013 diesel. Either the figure I found online was wrong or the one on the V5 is wrong.

ah thanks, do you know what the equation is for cars? I mean how is it worked out. The DVLA in the UK has a CO2 rating per vehicle but does not have NOx ratings. If there was a charge for commercials how would it be worked out? Is there a list of commercial NOx rating anywhere that you know of?

So when you use motorcheck.ie to check the vrt on a car from the north,

The nox levy on the email they send you, is another charge, besides vrt?

A friend of mine is looking at a 10 year old Mercedes, the vrt is €1800, give or take, then it says "nox levy" €2250.

Do you actually have to pay that nox levy as well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,982 ✭✭✭User1998

VRT is made up of two elements, Nox & Co2. A 10 year old Merc will be Euro 5. You need a Euro 6 if you want cheap Nox. Sept 2016 onwards has a max Nox charge of €600

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,913 ✭✭✭JacksonHeightsOwn

So would the overall charge be €4000 then, or just the vrt? I'm still confused

    Thanks for the help

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,982 ✭✭✭User1998

€4000. I suggest he reads up a bit on VRT on the official Revenue website and also uses the official Revenue free VRT calculator instead of doing paid checks.
