how does this work  in terms of logic to warranty a mandatory quarantine.

Isn’t this what happened recently to the Irish nurse returning from Australia? 45 minutes in Dubai en route, and had to do MHQ in Dublin.

didnt hear about that story but imagine whatever it takes to rip of 2k, and dont ask for any logic on top.

Ok how long is this MHQ for if for example it comes in for European countries? Are we talking weeks? Months? Years? Has anyone in Government answered this?

Its clearly meant to be permanent, or at the very least for the forseeable future. Otherwise why introduce this so late in the proverbial game.

Reality is though this will last until the airport owners and airline companies see a huge hit in their wallets when no one here wants to travel [more than just out of here] or nobody wants to come here.

I am still having difficulty believing that it is anything more than a temporary measure.
Anything else is extremely worrying given our being an EU Country.

Why introduce it so late with vaccines being rolled out and claiming they'll have nearly 100% of the population fully vaccinated by Fall?

Everyone I know is clambering at the bit to get the hell out of this country.
3 self employed mates have already left bringing their entire family to Spain and have no intention of returning until this crap is over.

It’s completely doable flying from Belfast this summer. O’Leary has already foreseen the fleeing masses of Irish and put on flights to accommodate the demand.
Nothing to stop you using this option and upon your return do the moral right thing and self isolate at home if necessary (get pcr on day 5 and out you pop)

It’s time for sane hard working Irish people to take the reigns on lifestyle decisions because them idiots in government are being led around the garden path by an insane mob on social media for a while now.
Do we really want them cretins deciding for us and our families ? Good luck

Just registered as I could not stand not to ask your opinion in my “conspiracy” idea regarding travel. My suggestion that we indeed have very bad prospects of traveling soon, if ever this will be back. I am myself was born in communist country and maybe have different outlook. Anyone remember last year’s plans of current leadership party regarding Universal Basic Income experiment? When I evaluate the current situation with jobs, businesses and now travel - implementation of UBI requires borders, immigration and cross border movements controls - I really believe that this is it. 5 years frame were indicated for UBI to be introduced. In the meantime many people will be leaving and emigrating, which will reduce the number of total payments, soon it ll be reasonable to implement as people here just not have any choices and will not stand against it, as there are no sight of unemployment levels falls down.. For them, current situation will define the population that “native citizens “ and only they qualify. I guess if we really the part of this experiment... Think having this payment “paradise” will come with huge strings attached regarding freedom. Tough times.. I will be happy if someone comments and give me better hope and prognosis. Thanks. PS. Please look up UBI Ireland

Dublin to Belfast airport by air coach is the solution to the issue.
Cheaper , safer and imo more comfortable than driving.

Seems buses are not immune. I'd be seriously giving it a miss.

There are some statistics to consider.
Irish residents spent 8 billion euro on foreign trips abroad in 2019.
There are approximately 15 billions euro extra saved on the bank accounts by Irish people in 2020 during lockdown because they had no possibility to spend.
Question - are these savings working for someone at the moment?
What happens with billions and billions of Euro if travel returns as before?

For anyone considering doing this, you can register to get your vaccine in Spain too even if you’re not a full fledged resident.

Coveney was on Newstalk this morning. Pretty much said the only hold up for MHQ for EU countries is capacity and it will be resolved by the weekend.

Between that and the inconsistency with how countries are selected, that’s curtains for anyone thinking of going abroad this summer.

Belfast could be an option but until we know how the U.K. is going to manage their vaccine passport and whether non U.K. people can travel without it remains to be seen

Was listening to that. Ireland has truly lost the run of itself. Policy dictated by social media.:confused::confused:

Any mention of how long this would last for? Weeks? Months? Years? Any word on if it would be reviewed or is that it?

This is part of the problem. There is no transparent criteria.

Leo previously said that when set up it could he in operation for at least a year

Even though we’re all going to be vaccinated by autumn? Surely to God someone has to call stop to this. What sort of absolute madness is this?

Insanity. Once this is in, it ain’t getting rolled back any time soon. Like a lot of this stuff, it will become normalised, and there’ll be no hurry. Even if it is removed this year, NPHET will point to the risk of variants for the next couple of years, which means MHQ could be implemented for any country at any time with no notice. Making any travel abroad subject to the risk of MHQ

Basically those that shouted the loudest got what they wanted

Was there any talk about the USA? Heading there in July for a family wedding. I’ll stay there if necessary I guess

Are we the only country doing this in the EU?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 198 ✭✭zebastein

Any chance it applies only to non-essential travel ?
How can it be manageable for people that need to travel for work regularly / that follow a medical plan in another country, ... ?
There are 10k+ French, 10k+ Italian, 5k+ German, people living in Ireland. If you add Poland on the list, that it 120+ k people.

I am not sure people realize the amount of travel that will happen anyway because people have no choice.

You're posting in a thread mainly consisting of people who aren't afraid to travel.

If someone's tolerance of risk is so low that it stops them driving through Belfast at the moment... you can be sure they aren't the people planning on travelling abroad anytime soon.

The average person isn't (and shouldn't) be afraid of coronavirus... and eh... Belfast.

I didn't hear Coveney this am but did the Interviewer ask him if this is a temporary measure until the majority are vaccinated? Or ask anything in relation to the proposed EU "Vaccine Passport" ?

Was just talking to my Husband about this whole MHQ now while he was grabbing a coffee from the kitchen.
He thinks that even if the Government add EU Countries to the List now, that once we have a significant number of our population vaccinated and a significant number of EU population are vaccinated that there will be significant pressure both from at home and the EU to remove EU Countries at a minimum.
