The big issue feeding on weanling bulls is the constant ration. They can actually go stale on it.
IMO they need a break from it ie grass for a bit.

Ration is simply too dear to justify giving the animal. We need to look to alternatives.

I have a lame/injured cow here that got hurt on the slats and subsequently ended up aborting her calf a few weeks ago.

Her withdrawal period is up this week after being treated by vet.

She still has a limp in her walk - could you take a injured/lame cow to the mart ? She is LMX cow 4 year old about 650kilos I’d imagine.

Or would I be better off taking her directly to factory ?

Hold onto her for a couple of weeks and then out to the mart IMO. Hanging a cow like that is always a loss maker until she’s fleshed.

On the mart eye app, when i view the catalogue,I'm only able to see the details up to the lot number currently in the ring.

Are others finding this the same?

+1. It’s part and parcel of the cull cow game, if she’s walking reasonably well she’ll sell fine.

Those sort of cow's are never discounted too much at this time of year provided there reasonably mobile. It's a different story in the backend when lad's are going to a shed with stock but she'll be bought to put straight to grass and should be OK. She's young too which is a big bonus with culls although all types of cows are a lot dearer the last week from what I've seen.

All stock seem to have gotten a lift in the last week but that's lunacy in fairness. I loaded average type CHx heifer yearlings for a man yesterday evening at work. He bought fair type hungry stores sub 300kg at an average of €750 last week. This week he bought a slightly stronger (maybe 30kg heavier) heifer at around €870 average. Apart from a few extra kilos I see little difference in this week's stock compared to last week and them €120 dearer.

Quick question mart related bought a suckler cow from mart in Jan she was announced aa scanned for feb/mar calving and it's on the docket.

She is breaking down alright but it'll be another week at least is it worth my while even bothering with the mart/seller or just suck it up.

Funny you should ask .I'm scanning in the morning because I wanna get accurate results. Im selling them later in the year and the fear of someone coming back.

I'd say you'd have to have good case to get a few pound back.

If she'd have calved in late March I'd have got over it but she should have been engaged as mar/April...and she's gone fierce heavy

What you selling DukeCaboom out of interest?

As regards the cow not calving according to the due date I'd be inclined to leave it if she's showing signs of calving now. Granted she should have been announced as March/April instead of February/March but it's debatable if you'll have much success with either the seller or the mart. It would be a different story if she didn't calve until June. I don't pass much heed of due date's with cow's as they may or may not prove correct and some lad's are known for taking the piss as regards date's. There's one time to buy or sell a springer imo and that's when she's springing down.

Suckler heifer springers. There just odds and ends of nice well marked heifers I met on the road. My wife is due round the same time so I'll have enough on my place.

You'll be worth robbing so!!!!! Good luck with them and hopefully the demand will continue, I've no doubt there good one's. The biggest issue atm would be buying anything to replace them with, anything with bulling potential is from dear to off the scale locally anyway.

Strange as LSL is working fine.
I even uninstalled and reinstalled Marteye but still no sound.
On a positive note it'll stop me buying anything

We suffer from location biase here, no one from the west wants our cattle its the equivalent of a kerry hurler going to killkenny!

That seems to be the case and from watching the online marts suckler bred stock always seem cheaper the further south you go. I know of a few lad's that used to bring coloured heifers and springers out of the south up here to sell on so there must have been something out of it. Most of the more high profile suckler breeding sale's are either here in the West or advertise as WOI (West of Ireland) bred stock.
