Ya looks like the best option. Travel will be good to go out of NI by late June as will inter county travel one would hope. So drive restriction free to Belfast, and fly restriction free from Belfast. That’s my plan all going well. I had planned on going from Dublin but this 2nd PCR test when you land is dodgy. A negative there and into MHQ. No thanks. Belfast it is. What’s a 3.5 hour drive when there’s a 3 week holiday at the end of it.

Who normally flies from Belfast? I have never looked

Adding any EU countries at a larger scale as described in the article would have major implications for multinational corporations and large amount of EU nationals living in the republic. If a EU country becomes a legitimate concern sure but we can't treat EU neighbours like third countries, the Freedom of movement is a founding principle and shouldn't be tampered with lightly. We already have PCR test, a travel ban and 14 days of quarantine. Knowing how slow our government is to act and react this would leave thousands of people unable to plan for major Family events, emergencies and occasions this year.

I don’t think this can be emphasised enough. I have 4 EU friends, 2 American friends and 1 Indian friend who have all left their jobs in tech co’s in Dublin just since December / January all because of our travel policies. Doesn’t seem like a problem now but recruitment for Dublin must be a very hard sell internationally right now.

Which is very unlikely because that would require them to actually make a decision about something.

A hard sell ha ha that's putting it mildly, the country is on course to be the laughing stock of Europe this summer.

But don't worry, if you do manage to get a vaccine you'll be able to meet another whole one person..

It will definitely be extended for another 3 months given domestic travel restrictions will be in place until at least July

I am not sure at least in terms of intra EU travel. The Commission takes its role as guardian of the Treaties very seriously - they have already indicated displeasure to other countries in respect to restrictions on movement.

As much as I’d like to agree with you, sadly the EU has been effectively toothless in getting Belgium and Spain to change their policies on travel. (Belgium for international and Spain for domestic)

Ireland will paddle it’s own canoe

I think we will have a free pass until early June but the extension of three months will face hurdles. Although neither of us can predict what they will try to do.

If the extension does not happen, I expect there will be an advisory and half way house solution over the summer. One could not preclude a challenge to quarantine from an EU country in the meantime gaining traction particularly if their case numbers are below ours. The Green zones still exist.

You’re forgetting though that outside this thread there is a hysteria about travel. There are people out there that if you prevent people flying to Ireland covid cases will disappear

Couple that with scaremongering about new strains and the public will scream for longer travel restrictions

Mark my word, as vaccinations increase fear of new strains will change to fear of “vaccine resistant strains”

Vaccine resistant mutations are a rarity. When it does happen, it takes so long to occur that vaccines are usually updated in the meantime. Influenza is a good example of a a virus that mutates quickly yet we have an annual vaccine. SARS type virus, like covid, don’t operate like the flu so risk of mutant strain that are suddenly vaccine resistant is incredibly low

There’s plenty of academic papers on it in the public domain

However NPHET doesn’t always follow the science so the scaremongering will continue

But the uk variant is a new virus exclusive to ireland apparently otherwise the rest of the world would be locking down
Looking forward to a couple of pints the weekend, sorry for those stuck in the great irish pandemic mess, well done to its contribitors

My gut says, can’t see any easing of restrictions for non essential international travel until end of September, the government will use the reopening of schools & the threat of variants as the reason no matter what the level of vaccination or hospital numbers are

My hope is that common sense prevails & Ireland accepts fully the European travel pass or whatever it’s called, if they don’t I really hope Europe puts the boot it & forces them to, it’s not just all about 2 weeks in Santa Ponsa

If anyone was guessing....when do people think intercounty travel will be allowed?...hoping to get to Belfast in June

What are people's predictions for summer 2022 ?

My wife is vaccinated, I plan to (tho trying to avoud AZ) , but will kids needs vaccination to travel ?
Is there some EU law that says kids cannot be required to vaccinate ...

Amazingly it seems not until July which is absolutely bonkers.

I can also foresee an extension to the MHQ. After all the hassles they surely won’t let it expire after 3 months. Travel is the big bad wolf in the general public’s eyes. Even though all the statistics prove otherwise.

Comment today seems to be the test on arrival will be an Antigen test.

To look at it positively , this could enable things to open more this summer.

Spain are all in on the Travel Certificate anyways.

There aren't any vaccines approved yet for 15 year olds or younger and won't be before Q3 so they can't get one.

Many European countries allow 12 year olds and younger to enter without a PCR when accompanied by a PCR-negative adult.

I'd say we'll see a lot fewer families travelling due to the costs of PCRing children even if adults have been vaxxed. Depends on the finer details on the EU digital travel pass. Is it possible antibody tests might be accepted?

Once cases begin to fall on the continent, unfortunately not likely to reach good levels until early May, there will be an effort by certain countries to allow people in with limited tests. I'd say the likes of Croatia will let you in with a negative Antigen, even that might not be required to be honest.

However, i'd say the certificate from the EU will require a PCR test rather than antigen.

Thats not how they’re looking at it though!!

No one knows how they’re looking at it yet. and it’ll be weeks before the details are worked out given the implications of an essential traveller testing positive upon arrival and not being geared up to go into a hotel for 14 days. And that’s only at the airport.....a procedure for the ferries and the border will have to be worked out too. Seems pretty ill thought out to me

And we should surely be opening up to the UK tourism market this summer, an almost completely vaccinated population. Huge potential revenue.

Just need to see the plebs in charge get it organized enough that I can get one.

Initial dose. Secondary dose numbers are nothing to get excited about

It’s amazing how Fox News like RTE is with its government propaganda.

The article starts by focusing on opportunity to restart international travel in EU but then half way through segways to news about Australia, ya know, and their complete blockade on international travel
