I think there are 2 things here - it seems that no sprinter wins as much after leaving DQS, there's clearly something about the team that enables sprinters to perform at such a high level. I imagine that's about more than just Morkov right now although he's clearly a factor in Sam's success too.

Then there's Sam's confidence which I think both him and the team talked about a lot last year. He needed to start believing that he truly can be the best, which I think he's getting closer to now. The tour must have been huge for him in that context, first to win stages (especially in Paris) but also to be able to take on and beat Sagan for green. That has to help then with things that others have mentioned, such as his old habits of jumping too soon etc.

tldr; imo the team helps hugely, while they've also helped him to develop as a sprinter :D
In my opinion Sam has everybodys number bar Caleb Ewan who if Ewans can get near Sams Wheel tends to pip him.Ewan must be now thinking he can win other classsics after his performance in MSR,Sagan ,Viviani ,Gaviria,Bouhanni all seem to have regressed recently and they only one I think that troubles Sam is Ewan.

I would have liked to have seen the outcome if Arnaud Demaere didn't have the mechanical yesterday. He looked to be close to Sam & Ewan's level last year but hasn't come close in a few races this year

kinda sort of,only if Sam beat him

Havent been following the last few additions but what chance does Sam have at Ghent Wevelgem on Sunday?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,451 ✭✭✭CantGetNoSleep

I think 5 of the last 10 have been bunch sprints, a few hills added recently to make it more selective. Most of the others small breakaway sprints of 10 or so. A good few sprinters there so they must feel there is a chance

Usually if won by a sprinter it a more all round borderline classics guy. He will probably be the DQS "if the bunch pull it back" foil but I don't see him keeping up with the 3 Vans and Sagan if they get in a break. It's also one of the few classics DQS don't have a ridiculous record in

It’s by far the ‘easiest’ of the Flanders classics though. DQT sending Morkov (who’s finished top 10 him himself) is a sign they fancy it a little (unlike Milan San Remo for example)

Not saying he’s favourite or anything but there’s at least a chance it come down to a small sprint and he can, on his best days, last with the likes of Sagan, Pederson, kristoff etc

Guess it could depend on the size and make up of any break after the last climb.... With Bennett, philipsen, Demare, Kristoff, Ackerman, Nizzolo there, there could be a lot of firepower to chase back a smallish break.

Looks like wind could be a big factor tomorrow too..... Sam's not had much luck in echelons lately.

Scheldeprijs which he should win if the wind and level crossings don't make a difference. RE: the level crossings am I thinking of a different race or was it that one that saw a mass DQ a few years ago with guys hopping the gates?

Paris roubaix. I think he could win this race due to it being flat and hopefully he doesn’t get mechanical issues. He’s in great form. They way he was climbing in Paris nice, he is probably favourite for the green jersey TDF.

It would be a massive shock if he did. I don't see him having the endurance over all those cobbles

I think he could do well, given how he handled Sunday. However, I'd say he's unlikely to get a start, how stacked DQS are. Even in Gent Wevelgem they went in with two sprinters.

surely Sam should have been plan B yesterday, get a more all rounder into the break and let Sam rest up on the chance it comes back together.
He didnt only sit on yesterday he took turns,no wonder he was sick,he was never beating Van Art that way.

Could be due to COVID etc

    Isn't PR cancelled?

not officially. It was cancelled, but then a local politician came out and said there would be a decision on it iirc, so no official confirmation of cancelation just yet

He probably was plan B. They defo didn’t plan on having him in the breakaway but that’s what happens with echelons and teams have to adapt

Should he not have sat up and waited for his teammates ,they were only a minute behind ,they could have organised the chase better,

You can't sit on in echelons - "easiest" way to stay in the group is to ride through. Sam wasn't the issue, it was the rest of them missing the splits.

As Dodge said, he probably was Plan B, as it was an unknown whether he could get over the Kemmelberg with the likes of WvA. Assuming he stays, I'd expect him to be one of the DQS Plan A's next year

Spot on. Also Sam doing a few pulls at the front wasn’t the difference between that group staying away and being caught.

Most likely scenario right now is a change of date

This should possibly be phrased "assuming Decuenick Quickstep survive".
Lefevre apparently only has 4 riders under contract for next year, one being Allaphilipe, and is going thru the usual rigmarole of trying to get new sponsors. Not sure is Decuenick are going to be a headline sponsor. I'm sure Sam staying on and being recontracted will be an important bargaining chip, regardless.

Would it be fair to say that Sam being the fastest sprinter in the fleet affects his ability to get over the bumpier courses. And if he wanted more success on these 1 day races he would probably need to sacrifice some of that power?

Now if you are Sam are you happy being the fastest man in the peleton or do you want to mix it up?

Yes and even then it might not be possible. It's pretty unusual these days to be a classics guy and sprinter unless you are Sagan who really is a once in a generation freak

Kelly even more so as he could time trial and get over all but the highest mountains while winning Classics and bunch sprints

And drop multiple Tdf winners on a climb.
