Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A Brucie Bonus Battle here as we delve further into the wonderful world of flags. We've already covered North America's Big 2 in the form of the USA and Canada so now we venture south of the border.
This is the Ultimate Battle of Mexico

    mexico-flag-performed-color-smoke-black-background-abstract-symbol-177495327.jpg

You may or may not be aware that official name of the country is The United States of Mexico. Those states are what we'll be getting into here. Luckily for me, there is a perfect tournament number of subdivisions to work with, 32 in all. Luckily for all of us, I think I've found a database that has beautiful graphics for all of these banners.

We'll go live within the hour so check back in before then.

This one is going to run in a slightly altered format. We will have group stages before progressing to the one on one knockout bouts. Each group will contain four flags and your job is to rank them in your order of preference from 1st to 4th. Top 2 from each group will advance.

    - Reasons are not mandatory but very much encouraged.

    - All Group matches will last 15 minutes.

    - In the event of a tie, I'll cast a deciding vote.

    - All groups are made using a random number generator.

Hopefully most of them are as awesome as the country flag. An eagle, on a cactus, eating a snake?!

The emblem-shield symbolizes the Aztec heritage. According to legend, the gods had advised the Aztecs that the place where they should establish their city was to be identified when they saw an eagle, perched on a prickly pear tree, devouring a serpent. They saw this mythical eagle on a marshy lake that is now the main plaza in Mexico City

    Kicking off in 10 minutes!

    Well this will be random!

So quick reminder, list your order of preference.

    Eg.

    1. Campeche
    2. Chiapas
    3. Chihuahua
    4. Colima

You posted them in order for me :D

    1. Chiapas - quite a scenic little raveen there
    2. Tlaxcala - like the skulls, and it's decent overall
    3. Tabasco - bit amateurish for me
    4. Hidalgo - too much going on, and most of it looks sh-t!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,264 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Hm. I was going to vote for the wavy white of the first flag, but then they're all like that.

Not a huge amount to choose here really. The bottom one with the olives and the drum is just strange. The red half sets Tlaxcala apart.
    I'll go -

    Tlaxcala
    Chiapas
    Tabasco
    Hidalgo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,526 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

    1. Chiapas because it has a river, and water in any shape or form is good! And I like a nice canyon.

    2. Hidalgo pretty colours. And I don't understand any of it, bar the Mexican flag bit on the right!

    3. Tlaxcala because my no. 4 was my least favourite so this had to go at no. 3

    4. Tabasco most boring of them all, both in style and colours.

This has to be the least scientific, rational or even logical tournament I've ever taken part in!!! :D

    Tlaxcala
    Chiapas
    Tabasco
    Hidalgo

    They look so Spanish :D

    1. Tlaxcala - I like the balance of colour, with the red in the background and not to many additional colours on the crest. A few little skulls is interesting too - must look this story up!
    2. Chiapas - the imagery is more interesting than Tabasco
    3. Tabasco - I like this crest / colouring more than my last choice
    4. Hidalgo - a bit much with the flag on flag action ;) and I'm not a fan of the crest over all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,511 ✭✭✭Purgative

1 Hidalgo - striking and unusual
2 Tabasco - love the sauce
3 Chiapas - its telling a story and it intrigues me
    4 Tlaxcala - still a good effort

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

    Chiapas 14
    Tlaxcala 13
    Tabasco 7
    Hidalgo 6

    Chiapas and Tlaxcala advance

    1. Veracruz
    2. Guanajuato
    3. Nayarit
    4. Colima

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,264 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Hm. Are they all like this? Does that mean we need to really get down to the detail in this competition?

Colima has a dismembered arm wearing a jester's hat. Kudos for that. Guanjanato has some sort of alien life form controlling the woman's mind - also interesting. Nayarit is a snapshot of my shed (it's not got many tools in it), and Veracruz thought this was a flag contest or something.

    So Colima
    Guanjanato
    Nayarit
    Veracruz

Guanajato - pretty lady on a shield
Colima - thats an odd one just got me curious
Veracruz - castles and crosses OK I suppose
Nayarit - looks like a football emblem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,378 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Ah Mexico, you've let me down here. Not really a fan of any... :o

    1. Colima
    2. Nayarit
    3. Veracruz
    4. Guanajuato

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,835 ✭✭✭ari101

    1. Veracruz - balanced, best of an ok lot, there is enough detail and colour, without being OTT
    2. Guanajuato - interesting but a lot going on, maybe too much detail
    3. Nayarit - a bit boring, except the centre purple that I don't much like
    4. Colima - least fav, not liking the colour scheme

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,272 ✭✭✭Barna77

    Guanajuato for the superhero nun
    Veracruz, has Hércules pillars there
Colima, for the arm of god
    Nayarit, cool bow and sword

    Actually in order for me

    Veracruz

I am a sucker for symmetry. I find it visually very appealing.

    ---

    Nayarit

I love the shape and the colours

    ---

    Colima

Don't like the piece in the middle but apart from that I love it.

    ---

    Guanajuato

    Meh bit fussy

    1. Colima - that headpiece on top, and whatever it is in the middle (reminds me of the Isle of Man!) and a good slogan. What's not to like? (I googled the slogan, and am still none the wiser, mind you)

    2. Veracruz - pretty, with some nice shrubbery at the sides, and now I want to know who Vera is (was?)

    3. Nayarit - because I prefer it a bit to no. 4, and it reminds me a bit of the Mayo flag

    4. Guanajuato - nah, colour mix doesn't appeal to me. Someone had to be last!

    Vera, Latin for "true"
    Meaning " True Cross"

Doesn't help that most of the names are gobbledegook (to me anyway, with all due apologies to Spanish speakers on here!)

When is Chihuahua coming up?? Or even better, Tequila?? :D

Baja California is cool; I like it.

Sonora is kind of silly. Then it's a decision between nice patterns and an axe-wielding Maya.

    Baja
    Guerrera
    Quintana Roo
    Sonora

    1. Sonora - that's a laugh! Tillage farming, livestock, fish.... and a bit of weighlifting in the middle. I love it!

    2. Quintana Roo - love the name, and a nice simple flag, reminds me of an early years arcade-game angry-face character of some sort.

    3. Guerrero - is that Fred Flintstone in the middle? Another amusing one. (I'm sure they're not meant to be amusing!!)

    4. Baja California - no, just no.

Quintana Roo I like simple to the point
Sonora I like it, its kind of goofy like a nursery school flag or the flag for a pet zoo
Guerrero Wow they certainly have some symbolism going on there
Baja California Bit too comic book super hero. Get a proper flag lads if you want to win on Boards.

It's the fact you voted the exact opposite order to me, and with equal like and dislike for the ones I disliked and liked :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,378 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Ah Mexico, this is more like it! They're all cool

Guerrera - an Aztec warrior wearing a dead animal!
    Sonora - giant whale, cow
Quintana Roo - simple and classy
Baja - it's nice, but a bit cluttered and religious for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,480 ✭✭✭✭Tauriel

    1. Baja California

These are tough to pick between...

    1. Baja California - there's an elegance to this crest the others don't have, it feels 'flag like'
    2. Sonora - I have no clue what is going on here but it is interesting :D
    3. Guerrero - The crest is a better shape and has more to it than my last place, we should all dress up as leopards with stick weapons... ;)
    4. Quintana Roo - boring, and little effort to create a crest that catches the eye

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

We have a three way tie for 2nd place as it stands. Next vote crucial

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,712 ✭✭✭Sawduck

Quintana Roo simple yet effective, no over the top shenanigans
    Guerrero - nice looking flag
Baja California - a bit to crazy but kinda cool looking too
Sonora - not a fan of it

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,336 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

    Sonira
    Baja
