A Brucie Bonus Battle here as we delve further into the wonderful world of flags. We've already covered North America's Big 2 in the form of the USA and Canada so now we venture south of the border.
This is the Ultimate Battle of Mexico

You may or may not be aware that official name of the country is The United States of Mexico. Those states are what we'll be getting into here. Luckily for me, there is a perfect tournament number of subdivisions to work with, 32 in all. Luckily for all of us, I think I've found a database that has beautiful graphics for all of these banners.

We'll go live within the hour so check back in before then.

This one is going to run in a slightly altered format. We will have group stages before progressing to the one on one knockout bouts. Each group will contain four flags and your job is to rank them in your order of preference from 1st to 4th. Top 2 from each group will advance.

    - Reasons are not mandatory but very much encouraged.

    - All Group matches will last 15 minutes.

    - In the event of a tie, I'll cast a deciding vote.

    - All groups are made using a random number generator.

Hopefully most of them are as awesome as the country flag. An eagle, on a cactus, eating a snake?!

The emblem-shield symbolizes the Aztec heritage. According to legend, the gods had advised the Aztecs that the place where they should establish their city was to be identified when they saw an eagle, perched on a prickly pear tree, devouring a serpent. They saw this mythical eagle on a marshy lake that is now the main plaza in Mexico City

    Well this will be random!

So quick reminder, list your order of preference.

    Eg.

    1. Campeche
    2. Chiapas
    3. Chihuahua
    4. Colima

You posted them in order for me :D

    1. Chiapas - quite a scenic little raveen there
    2. Tlaxcala - like the skulls, and it's decent overall
    3. Tabasco - bit amateurish for me
    4. Hidalgo - too much going on, and most of it looks sh-t!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,117 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Hm. I was going to vote for the wavy white of the first flag, but then they're all like that.

Not a huge amount to choose here really. The bottom one with the olives and the drum is just strange. The red half sets Tlaxcala apart.
    I'll go -

    Tlaxcala
    Chiapas
    Tabasco
    Hidalgo

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,668 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

    1. Chiapas because it has a river, and water in any shape or form is good! And I like a nice canyon.

    2. Hidalgo pretty colours. And I don't understand any of it, bar the Mexican flag bit on the right!

    3. Tlaxcala because my no. 4 was my least favourite so this had to go at no. 3

    4. Tabasco most boring of them all, both in style and colours.

This has to be the least scientific, rational or even logical tournament I've ever taken part in!!! :D

    Tlaxcala
    Chiapas
    Tabasco
    Hidalgo

    They look so Spanish :D

    1. Tlaxcala - I like the balance of colour, with the red in the background and not to many additional colours on the crest. A few little skulls is interesting too - must look this story up!
    2. Chiapas - the imagery is more interesting than Tabasco
    3. Tabasco - I like this crest / colouring more than my last choice
    4. Hidalgo - a bit much with the flag on flag action ;) and I'm not a fan of the crest over all

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,509 ✭✭✭Purgative

1 Hidalgo - striking and unusual
2 Tabasco - love the sauce
3 Chiapas - its telling a story and it intrigues me
    4 Tlaxcala - still a good effort

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

    Chiapas 14
    Tlaxcala 13
    Tabasco 7
    Hidalgo 6

    Chiapas and Tlaxcala advance

I think with voting as we did, we cancelled each other out anyway :)

    1. Veracruz
    2. Guanajuato
    3. Nayarit
    4. Colima

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,117 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Hm. Are they all like this? Does that mean we need to really get down to the detail in this competition?

Colima has a dismembered arm wearing a jester's hat. Kudos for that. Guanjanato has some sort of alien life form controlling the woman's mind - also interesting. Nayarit is a snapshot of my shed (it's not got many tools in it), and Veracruz thought this was a flag contest or something.

    So Colima
    Guanjanato
    Nayarit
    Veracruz

Guanajato - pretty lady on a shield
Colima - thats an odd one just got me curious
Veracruz - castles and crosses OK I suppose
Nayarit - looks like a football emblem

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,541 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Ah Mexico, you've let me down here. Not really a fan of any... :o

    1. Colima
    2. Nayarit
    3. Veracruz
    4. Guanajuato

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,835 ✭✭✭ari101

    1. Veracruz - balanced, best of an ok lot, there is enough detail and colour, without being OTT
    2. Guanajuato - interesting but a lot going on, maybe too much detail
    3. Nayarit - a bit boring, except the centre purple that I don't much like
    4. Colima - least fav, not liking the colour scheme

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,270 ✭✭✭Barna77

    Guanajuato for the superhero nun
    Veracruz, has Hércules pillars there
Colima, for the arm of god
    Nayarit, cool bow and sword

    Actually in order for me

    Veracruz

I am a sucker for symmetry. I find it visually very appealing.

    ---

    Nayarit

I love the shape and the colours

    ---

    Colima

Don't like the piece in the middle but apart from that I love it.

    ---

    Guanajuato

    Meh bit fussy

    3. Veracruz
    4. Guanajuato

    1. Colima - that headpiece on top, and whatever it is in the middle (reminds me of the Isle of Man!) and a good slogan. What's not to like? (I googled the slogan, and am still none the wiser, mind you)

    2. Veracruz - pretty, with some nice shrubbery at the sides, and now I want to know who Vera is (was?)

    3. Nayarit - because I prefer it a bit to no. 4, and it reminds me a bit of the Mayo flag

    4. Guanajuato - nah, colour mix doesn't appeal to me. Someone had to be last!

Just what I was thinking - this game is turning into harder work than I'd anticpated! :o

    Vera, Latin for "true"
    Meaning " True Cross"

Same for me, this group stage counting has more turns than Silverstone!
