Just curious also as to how the teacher continues to work remotely if their class is back? Would they then take on the SET role for the older children?

It will be left up to the principal to deploy teacher to support children remotely - either as SET or to cater for children who should be back but won’t etc.

Suicidal decision. Schools should be closed until vaccinations are completed. September opening makes sense.

    LOL....

Kids aren't really a major part of the vaccination programme currently. They probably won't even be started by the time September rolls around.

Are you a teacher or parent or both or neither?

Younger kids aren’t doing as well as 14 or 15 year olds at remote learning, they need it more.

They are doing basic learning anyway which I can do at home no problem once the teacher sends me on the weekly lessons.

If lockdown is so important that businesses can’t open and I can’t drive 8km for a walk in the forest then I don’t think kids finger painting is that urgent.

Why would you send back the bloody youngest kids first. The ones who touch everything and rub their faces every two seconds.

Obviously it should be secondary school kids who have a bit of sense going back first to test the waters. 6th years and 3rd years who have exams to study for.

This is basic stuff, how stupid are the people making these decisions.

How does it make sense to have hundreds of kids in a school in a few weeks time but they won’t allow businesses to open who might have four masked adults on the premises at a time.

Had my absolute fill of it at this stage, bunch of clueless muppets making a balls of things for the last year.

Secondary school kids don't care. Especially in Dublin. I can post a video of at least 100 students piling out the school gates and walking up the chipper for lunch. Standing outside the chipper messing and kissing and just being teenagers.
They will not keep distance from their friends.

I've a treat for you all, an article that has a bit of something for everyone here, ha ha.

    Really great and interesting read!

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/10/magazine/school-reopenings-rhode-island.html?smid=url-share

Moral of the story: schools can open and stay open with really strict safety measures in place. Even then it won't be pretty...

Should a more transmissible variant take hold in the United States, administrators and government leaders will once again have to take in the competing demands of their communities, to read the tolerance for risk, to try to calculate the cost of school closings — and determine whether creative, aggressive mitigation strategies can make it possible to provide in-person education. In London, the schools have closed, following months of relatively lax safety precautions (children up to age 11 wore no masks, and middle schoolers wore them only in common areas). In Spain, by contrast, where schools now have strict safety precautions in place, the schools remain open, even in Valencia, where the daily incidence of positive tests has hit 188 per 100,000.

    That’s not good to hear.

4-5 year olds are even more rubbish at not keeping distance and not spreading germs.

Personally I wouldn’t open any schools till September.

People shouldn't really be recording students, what purpose does that video serve? To prove a point?

Seeing children scared or not knowing how to interact or approach people would worry me more than a group of socially normal teenagers.

Thats silly. Very few people want schools closed until September. Just some forward planning and safety precautions in place...that's it.

Tomas Ryan (red rag to a bull) had a great suggestion to open the schools county by county depending on numbers. Treating schools in all parts of the country the same way is moronic.

    How is it silly.

This virus has shut down the country for a year at this stage. We have been in level 5 lockdown for two months and the numbers are still high. Why take yet another premature risk.

If businesses are not opening schools should not be opening.
What safety precautions can be in palace with 300 kids and tons of stupid parents outside like sardines chatting away.

I presume the reason why lockdown continues is so that schools CAN reopen.

Tons of stupid parents? Does that constitute parent bashing? You can't control what people do outside of school, most will follow instructions from schools in terms of drop off advice etc but there will always be the odd few that common sense eludes.

Because at some point we have to start moving forward. Businesses need to start reopening too. Our elective representatives are way out of their depth here. They need to start bringing the people along with them. Give some hope.

Businesses reopening are far more important than primary schools.

What the hell is parent bashing?
The vast majority outside my kids school are on top of each other. I consistently have to move when people stand right beside me.

    https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/spain-schools-become-top-source-of-covid-19-clusters/2150936#

"data released by the Health Ministry on Friday suggest that schools have become the leading source of clusters over the last week.

Looking at the 1,678 coronavirus outbreaks detected over the last week in Spain, schools were the main focal point for contagion, overtaking for the first time other single settings like social or family gatherings, nursing homes, healthcare centers or workplaces."

The idea is when you begin to open schools the government is showing that it's the begining of the opening of the wider economy.....
Personally i don't think schools should be open until there are alot more vaccinations are carried out.......but then we might be waiting forever....

True story, the numbers have not dropped enough considering we have been in level 5 for two months though. I just think this could lead to a longer lockdown.

This nonsense needs to be over soon and I don’t think this is the best move to make that happen.

Waiting for vaccinations is definitely not something I would support.

I’m pretty sure the vaccines aren’t even approved for use in children. Clinical trials have just started.

And even then what - are we only going to allow children return to school if they are vaccinated? (And if anyone thinks it relevant, I fully intend to avail of vaccines for myself and my children as soon as we can)

Only caught a second on the radio earlier, but INTO rep did say they hadn't yet seen the guidance on reopening, so could there be another twist in the tale yet?

I agree with you here. But I can't say that as to others it'll just be a lazy teacher making excuses.

Yes this nonsense needs to be over. And the sooner that happens the better. There is a vast amount of problems coming down the track once things start to go back to normal. The sooner we reopen the less damaging these will be.

Average 7 day cases will be less than 700 this week - the numbers are not high. We have some of the lowest nos in Europe now, who opened schools when their nos were higher than ours.

Lower than Netherlands, Belgium, Italy etc

Our numbers are half that of France, we are 30% lower than Spain.

Afaik, most businesses are still operational. This means a lot of parents WFH and homeschooling and that affects productivity. China has returned to growth. We have had the most business days closed in Europe. Multinationals can leave, if they do how we will fund our public sector, our debt, etc.?

They should have dropped further than that considering it’s been level 5 since the end of December.

I trust other countries to run things and follow the rules much better than Ireland.

I just want things back the way they were as quickly as possible. Whatever it takes to make that happen is the way to go.

    Nothing really.

Even the INTO twitter can't spin it that there are any changes worth shouting about.

I haven't seen what was issued to schools but do they just continue the same as before Christmas? Staggered starts etc?

Same as before. No changes. Medical masks for staff partaking in intimate care is about the only change.
