    Insufficient.

So far a 6, could rise to 7 of the vaccine roll out goes well or could drop to 4 or 5.

I think they've unfairly targeted pubs during the lower periods and been too lenient with some non essential retailers and especially too lenient with tourists and those travelling.

    Shambles.

Hysterical over reaction which requires hyperbolic phrases to justify the heavy handed restrictions they have imposed. Three of these incredibly destructive, authoritarian lockdowns in a year is utterly indefensible by any metric.

Simon "There were 18 covid before covid 19" Harris or Stephen "Trampolines are inherently dangerous" Donnelly, both inept and acting ministers for health during the year

    Abysmal

The UK NHS has vaccinated millions of Britons while we have barely 250000 out of a population of 5 million.

The UK looks set to open up without restrictions or masks months - at least - before we do.
They will be back to work commuting and enjoying pubs restaurants cinemas theatres concerts and foreign holidays before the year is out.

We will be languishing in lockdowns still waiting for our injections - if we keep rolling over that is!

Anyone who still has faith in this government or nphet has lost the plot

This spring and summer the public especially the young will ignore the restrictions and carry on with normal life.

    It's gone beyond a joke

Our economy is on its knees and our people are fed up to their back teeth.

    Which government?

This current one is a shambles. Foggy and uncertain in strategy, shoddy implementation, terrible messaging. Weak willed

I'd give them a 3 at best right now.

2/10, and that's being generous. Government making it up as they go along, absence of any clearly defined plan. Dangling business owners at the end of their tether with no dates announced for easing of restrictions. Mercilessly targeting sectors of society that marginally contributed to the pandemic & letting Covid take grip in hospitals and nursing homes. Furthermore, inability to impose mandatory hotel quarantine for foreign arrivals allowing new variants to spread. Vaccines being rolled out at a glacial pace compared to the UK, prolonging lockdown and mass unemployment. A unforgivable calamity from start to finish, people sacrificing a year of their lives for the sake of a tiny minority.

The vaccine is a red herring.
We only have any vaccine because we're in the EU so we get the drawbacks/benefits of that.
The UK can make their own decisions.

Off the top of my head, only Brazil, the UK, Sweden and the States made a bigger balls of things

And Brazil and the States are many, many multiples the size of our population

A tiny island with just 5 million people who are, Dublin aside, reasonably spread out

And still, they absolutely fcuked it and continue to do so

Criminally negligent. Not closing the borders pre Christmas deserves nothing less than criminal prosecution against those at the wheel beforehand. We would have 95 percent LESS cases, or circa 30 daily, of the airports had been closed.

Yeah....the UK have been really brilliant.

How about them having almost 2.5 x per capita hospitalised throughout the pandemic and almost 4 x per capita in excess deaths during the pandemic.
Cases per capita almost 50% higher.

    Hardly a shining light.

Yes they have got a head start in the vaccination race, but they're cutting corners. The only country in the world having a 12 week gap between doses. Its ballsy, I'll give them that and i sincerely hope it works as a strategy, but Boris has really bet the house on this course of action.

In the last 12 months they have made some great decisions & some disastrous ones. From June pubs & restaurants should have been open for food but no alcohol. While the rest of the world decides to restrict movements at Christmas we were one of the few that thought it a good idea. See how that worked out

UK have one of the highest death rates in the world. Higher that the US. Not a good country to compare US to imo

Good, not perfect but good - I say this as someone with vulnerable family and friends to look out for.

A damn sight better off than the UK with it’s absolutely terrible death rate

    Pure mess

They seem to lurch from diaster to diaster, promising all sorts and not delivering on them

I have no confidence in their capacity to get the vaccinations done....plenty other countries steaming ahead and we will be unlikely to be finished before october/nobember imo

The solution and way out of this crisis is there, just get on with it and vaccinate

Lockdown 2 - Outbreaks caused by Meat Factories in which they were giving people a heads up that inspectors were coming. House parties also a big contributor.

Lockdown 3 - Caused by telling everyone if they behaved well in Lockdown 2 they can all have a good Christmas. Now we are looking at 5 months lost.

Wet pubs should have been allow open with the same rules in place and household gatherings outright banned with harsh penalties. At least a wet pub can be a controlled environment.

I was happy enough with the approach but that has changed drastically in this lockdown. It's a very grim place right now, that's for sure.

Despite how bad the UK has dealt with Covid, its beginning to look like they are getting a handle on things, ares are so inept, by the looks of things, we will be subjected to lockdowns for the rest of the year. Having stuck by the lockdowns, isolating from family etc, basically playing by the rules, the State is letting 5k people stroll into the state from among the worst hit places in the last month alone, straw/camel/back, what is the point if they are going to disregard their own guidelines.
As bad as it is, how many people have actually died? 1 is too many, but many of those peoples deaths are down to the States refusal to manage the situation correctly and simply deny entry from certain countries/take the action they need here in one go rather than the half hearted piecemeal asshatted manner they are messing about.
It has gone beyond a sick joke.

While I agree with a lot of what you say, Id say a lot of that minority could have been protected and were entitled to be, but the State fcuking things up is what caused many deaths. They should have tackled this head on from the start when they were pi$$ing about saying St Patricks was going to still go ahead last year and when they allowed entry of Italian Rugby fans to a match that wasnt going ahead, that was early on some might say, but before we got well into the summer, everyone knew what was going on and they have been taking the pi$$ out of us since, stringing us along, I was all for lock downs and shut downs and masks, and I still am for those things if done right in short sharp bursts, but the halfhearted efforts by the Govt by not actually sticking to things themselves, and refusing to take on whomever the 5k people are being brought here by, means we may as well not bother.

Im curious, what are the numbers for Covid deaths and Flu deaths from the last few years?

The UK are the equivalent of the gold winning athlete who lapped you twice already while Ireland are the equivalent of the mad priest who runs onto the track with a kilt.

Sure the UK have made mistakes at every turn but the fact is they are going to be out of lockdown and back to normal way before us and we will be languishing in lockdown while they will be enjoying pints in the pubs and cocktails on tropical beaches.

Around 100 during the 4 months of flu season, but of course there's a vaccine for the flu which haven't had as of yet with covid.

Shambolic, we are an island, it was imported. We saw Italy and Spain falling long before we did but yet ports, airports and borders were left wide open.

Leo was at the helm at the time, hes a trained doctor and surely during his training "contagious diseases and viruses" were covered in the course, he should have taken is political hat off and put his doctors hat on and closed it up tight.

He is the biggest failure this country has seen in a long time. I hate the sight of Mehole Martin, his attitude and arrogance is one thing but Varadkar's handling of it in the early days was just criminal.

Initial response was slow and too reactive.
Then the response was too strong against places like pubs.
Masks should have been introduced sooner - if at the very least to get people used to them.
At least we had some sort of a plan then.
Then they covered their eyes and ears for the lead up to Xmas.
    Now they're fining people.
    Slow vaccination programme.
    With no real plan.

The mixed messaging and one upmanship is a disaster. We were in better hands when we had a temporary government who made decisions not caring about facing an electorate, which says a lot about how spineless the current lot are.

Dont forget Holohan was at a conference about the harm of alcohol when with 500 people from 50 different countries when other countries were talking about closing borders.

In general good enough at keep deaths down pretty bad at everything else. Social cost has been high, this last lockdown is awful.

    2020
February - govt doesn't stop schools from going on ski holidays to northern Italy
March, April, - lockdown 1, COVID positive cases sent to nursing homes, no PPE in the country but despite that many lives were saved by the lockdown
May - economy starts to reopen
June - Europe opens for tourists, govt advice is don't travel but green list is published
July - no real checks on people coming onto the country case numbers start to rise from a low of under 10 a day
August - govt puts brakes on plans for phase 4 reopening, case numbers continue to rise, no real restrictions on people coming into the country
September - 100 daily cases, pubs that don't serve food reopen in all counties except Dublin, Dubliners flock to other counties for beer
October - Pubs close after 2 weeks of being open due to spike in cases that everybody saw coming - govt announces 'gamechanger' by banning household visits in effort to avoid lockdown 2, lockdown 2 starts middle of the month
    November - lockdown 2
December - lockdown 2 ends with new case numbers still averaging 300 a day, entry from GB stopped but 12 hours given to people to fly back, Aer Lingus even put on extra flight before deadline, numbers hit 800 a day average before govt does anything
End of December - 2 week Lockdown

    2021
January - lockdown 3 extended to march 5th, vaccine rollout gone to pot
February - lockdown 3 extended to April. Govt says high compliance with rules despite roads packed, Canary Island holidays and student house parties galore... Brazilians flown into the country and Brazilian variant detected in Ireland

Fair to say it's a bit of a disaster

    Masks don't work
    Social distancing does not work
    Lockdowns don't work
We have destroyed the economy plunged ourselves in tens of billions of debt and created a social disaster for years to come.
For the sake of a virus with a 0.03% death rate.
The vaccine is now available for the very sick and very old who should be cocooning
Only a handful of victims of working age died from this virus.
Locking hundreds of thousands out of work - work which in many cases will not be there when restrictions are lifted - will plunge these people into poverty and homelessness.
This was evident at the very start of this when everyone said lockdowns were a medecine worse than the disease.
This entire fiasco hws been the greatest overreaction and own goal since the world went to war in 1914.
