The covid tests aren't completely reliable, though probably somewhat more reliable than your inspired medical diagnosis.

I'd be more inclined to give the story some credence if it wasn't based on 4th hand information.

The delaying of the reopening of construction into April will push the reopening of non essential retail into May. That’s another 3.5 months of this misery. Absolutely ridiculous the constant moving of goalposts and toying with people’s minds and hopes so casually. There’s no reason why construction can’t reopen as soon as possible. It never should have closed in the first place, imo.

Is there much construction even closed? Any tradesperson I know is working away saying they are working on essential sites

A lot of construction has been reopening.

You seemed willing to give it credence insofar as it was saying the child didn't have covid though, right? Which I guess is a further hand away than the doctors' assessment..

This is what worries me, they always reopen bit by bit so any delay in one stage means we could easily be looking at heavy heavy restrictions up to the start of summer..

Yeah, they have to take a very guarded approach; open one sector, wait and see, then maybe another etc.

Testing negative for Covid is a somewhat more specific thing which is hard to get wrong. Information about an inflammatory syndrome which has passed through 3 parties before being reported could easily get mixed up along the way. Have you ever heard of Chinese whispers?

Yep. Over 4 months of restrictions we were told could only last a few weeks because they're too harsh. I've been compliant to date but this is getting hard to take.

Basically going to be five months if they push out construction until April as nothing reopening in society until Retail in May after that

The government is going to lose an awful lot of goodwill and compliance with their actions

I'd say the case numbers are probably really double or treble that. Now thats just my opinion in case anyone tries to bite my head off.

You're alright. WHO actually thinks its factor 10.

Yeah, hard to see any serious reopening until daily numbers are well below 100. Christmas frightened the government. The living with Covid plan was blown out of the water. They refuse to go for zero Covid. That just leaves a long hard lockdown followed by gradual reopening followed by hard lockdown again when the numbers turn.

This is exactly what will happen. There will be at least 3/4 weeks between schools and construction opening, and same again with construction and retail. Another 3/4 weeks between retail and restaurants.

I forsee public compliance hitting rock bottom if it's confirmed that construction are not going back and the leaving cert is essentially cancelled. It's a complete farce.

Reopening of schools will be phased with reviews every 2 to 3 weeks

You're being nice saying over cautious. Call it what it is imo, they're a bunch of cowards.

I have to disagree. I think they did a terrible job on their predictions. Neil Ferguson in the UK has a history of terrible predictions.

With our economy destroyed, the day will come for our health service. Would it not have been better off to let people keep paying taxes and reinvest in the health service instead of stopping people from working and diminishing tax revenue?

No difference in death rates in lockdown states versus non lockdown in the US(if anything lockdown causes more deaths)

When you lock people up, unless they are getting vitamin D supplements they will have a weakened immune system compared to if they were getting sun. For this reason I would suggest the seasons have a far great baring on virus deaths than lockdowns do.

So I would have to be more critical of the people making predictions than you appear to be.

Did you forget to mention that the "lockdown states" like New Jersey and New York that top the per capita death rates were the areas where the virus first spread in February and March of last year and when people started showing up in hospitals ill, it was not known how to treat it? This is clearly evidenced by the dates of the deaths.

The "non lockdown" states like Texas, Arizona and Florida benefited from already implementing extensive social distancing and restrictions by the time the virus hit them and also from all of the medical knowledge built up over the madness in the North East during April.

They could easily change the legislation for that if they really wanted to.

I'd be the first to criticise the government, and have done many times on this forum, but it must be some difficult task, facing conflicting concerns in an ever changing problem; I don't envy them a bit, it's a horrible situation for them and us all to be in.

You definitely should Niall. Do it safely (outdoors), but social contact is absolutely necessary.

Let's just wait until March and see what it is officially announced.

This might be a mad idea but how about the government amend the legislation underpinning that before that’s lifted. Be proactive instead of reactive which seems to be the way this government has been doing things. The government have the support of the people(kind of) but there is a tipping point.
