    2. Do not tell others what to do, or what to post
    3. It is against site rules to seek or offer any medical advice. Please do not post here about your symptoms asking what to do. Contact your doctor by telephone and they can advise you as appropriate

    In terms of thread content:
    • Treat everything you read here with caution. Anything posted is from an anonymous internet poster. You cannot assume anyone has any "specialist" knowledge whatever they claim
    • Statistics are important to some (and I personally pay a lot of attention to them), but they are of very little use to anyone who is already caught up in this, or indeed knows of people who are caught up
    • Whatever your own views are please recognise others are entitled to different views., Even if at different extremes please do not try and repeatedly ram your views down the throats of those who have differing views
    • Cut out any cover-up/conspiracy stuff. If you have a reliable source quote it (not just their words but provide a link to a reliable source) - otherwise your claims carry little if any weight. If you wish to discuss conspiracy theories we have a dedicated forum for that and it’s not this one
    • If the likes of the HSE have a verified Twitter account we can assume what they post is accurate. Randomers on here or elsewhere cannot be considered "official" or "reliable" sources
    • If people wish to flout the restriction rules that is up to them. They cannot complain at the consequences, be that direct action from the authorities, exposure in Social Media (not here) or being shunned by locals, friends, family etc. If they post about it here, or encourage others to flout the rules, trying to appear macho, or thinking they are above the rules or simply being a smart arse, posting privileges will be removed
    • If you don't want to see discussion about Trump perhaps stay clear of this thread between the hours of 22:00 and 01:00. This is a thread for "breaking news" so please do not expect posters to discuss things happening "now" in other threads. It's not discouraged but equally posters expect to discuss such issues in this thread (added 14/04/20)
    • There is absolutely no good reason top try and forecast or predict daily numbers, so do not do so

All threadbans carry over, but we will reconsider if anyone wishes to discuss it further via PM

its a legitimate question - and not conspiracy. we should be aware of where the figures come from.

-ve on admission AND +ve on day 7 or later: catagorised as hospital acquired.

-ve on admission BUT +ve before day 7: Community acquired

Both these are added to make the daily hospital cases for a given day as these patients are in hospital who have covid.

HPSC publishes a break down of the hospital acquired at a later stage. From the point of view of COVID levels in a hospital we don't really need such pedantry in the headline figures.

    Shout again to positive news

Positivity rate of under 8% is great.

The same thing happened in the last two waves. All the negativity spawns these late reactions. In spite of clearly improving case numbers over the last 10-14 days, the narrative has been relentless "things are going to ****e and there's no improvement in sight".

This leads to headless-chicken style panicking and people screaming "Ahhhhh we have to do something!"

So the talking heads pop up and go, "Zero Covid! Quarantine! These are something. We must do them!".

In a week's time when case numbers or firmly in 3 digits and still dropping, it'll all be forgotten about. Again.
Yeah seamus your predictions have been bang on in the past, I'm going to watch this space [/sarcasm]

I believe it's important to know the rate of hospitalisation as a result of contracting Covid. Lumping both figures together and presenting them as one is very unscientific and one would have to question the purpose of doing this. Covid levels in hospital is a separate issue.

Big difference between a can of Guinness and a pulled pint to be fair.

They don't lump them together. The number you get that the poster referred to is the total covid cases in a given hospital on a given day. They've stated in numerous briefings their estimates for cases acquired in the hospital.

As a side note, if anything they overestimate cases acquired in the hospital but it's a decent proxy nonetheless.

Yup mostly the price.. :pac: Ah with the widget in the can, you can get a decent enough pour. Plus unless you live nearby or get it delivered, not sure having to drink it outside in the cold is better than a can in the comfort of your own home especially this weather.

But guess there's probably a social side to the takeaway one too.

Given the reduction in numbers, an improving positivity rate, vaccinations being rolled out. Why does listening to the news feel like that we are at the start of this and we are nowhere to seeing light at the end of the tunnel.

The 3/4 weeks of lockdown are definitely having an effect on the numbers. Good to see. I think people will start to feel a lot more positive as we get near Spring.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

If you want a bit of positivity on a weekly basis then tune into Pat Kenny on a monday morning on Newstalk he has Luke O'Neill on and he is always highlighting any good news and staying positive the whole time

Poor UK. It finally looked like they were managing to do a decent job at something, but if this is confirmed, they've wasted their time and money and are wide open to another huge loss of life when they ease things.

I always like Luke when he’s on TV. Someone usually posts the clip of him way back on the Late Late when he said washing our hands was all we needed etc. but his positive, upbeat demeanour is much needed.

If I understand your question correctly it was the normal doses for over 65. The Half dose first (by mistake) and full dose two weeks later was given only to under 55s.

We'll have to wait to see what the EMA publish.
There is a larger trial ongoing in the US which should give a better picture of efficacy in older groups.

Slaney Foods meat processing plant in Bunclody will continue to operate at a reduced capacity and said it is following all public health protocols.

It comes as 77 more coronavirus cases were confirmed in Wexford, which currently has the fifth highest infection rate in the country.

Staff at Slaney Foods were screened last Friday, with 42 testing positive.

Absolutely, hospital numbers are going to take time to come down but things are looking up.

Best to keep an eye just on the swabs and forget the nonsense peddled by the media.

I just hope the government and the measures are agile and not deeply conservative into the summer.

Theyll do everything but bring in quarantine for everyone entering. Truly gutless. With any luck the mandatory quarantine being passed tomorrow in UK forces their hand.

Looks like the UK approach will be similar (according to FT) with MQ initially only from high risk countries and those without PCR
