I was out and about last night and came to a checkpoint, “What’s the purpose of your journey” asked the Guard, I said “just out for a drive” (which I was) and he said “on you go, just try and stay within your 5km” and off I went!

I was 40km from home in a different country mind!!

Every time you go an extra kilometer from your house, a granny dies.

There is pretty much always high levels of mortality among the 80+ demographic.

You should look up life expectancy ages in Ireland and the average age of a Covid death.

    I can't believe people don't see this.

any illness or even a fall is possibly lethal to people over 80 , not to mention people with underlying conditions. This has always been the way - covid or non covid.

We have had 305 people without a known underlying condition die of covid , they had the median age 84!.
even if you took a more -than-reasonable proportion of the "unspecified" it is less than 320 - we have a population of 5million.

table 1 if you are keen

    https://www.cso.ie/en/releasesandpublications/br/b-cdc/covid-19deathsandcasesseries22/

Only 22 deaths under age 65 - sad but that's a very small number out of 5million people.

Some will argue that lockdown worked , that is the proof they will cry.

But I say no - we have had 200k positives cases and we should include people who had it and were not diagnosed which some science says could be a multiple of this.
So it's not unreasonable to say many as 750 to a million have had covid in ireland.

That's what we shut down society for over a year for and damaged our lives in a way that will take years for some to recover from (if at all) .

Ironically they close down sports ,gyms and sea swimming which will actually improve health and immunity and greatly reduce the risk of a bad dose of covid , you couldn't make that sh1t up

    This is loss of reason.

The only argument you may have is to stop the hospitals being over run...the old flatten the curve nonsense.
It is bull**** esp when many in hospitals with covid are in for other reasons and contracted it in the hospital.
Sadly this includes the only person I knew personally who died from covid - despite being terminally ill.

If that is your argument, you are saying we are paying with our lives - for gross mismanagement by our politicians - remember that Michael and Leo are both former ministers of health. Yet now we swallow their sh1te cos they bleat on about some common good tripe.
Which is sh1te cos it removes their responsibility to do their jobs and places the onus on the tax payer who pays them. So instead we have a perception of superman Dr Tony and NPHET and the evil teenagers dying for a ride at a house party. That's skewed as fcuk if you ask me .

    jaysis wept.

Is that really the only alternative? Nothing in between? Nothing at all. And if we completely lockdown then deaths will stop? Eternal life? Cop on.

Schools and construction are reopening. Think that’s more than enough risk for now. You’re quite literally plying with fire.

I wouldn’t usually be much of a fan of Ryan Tubridy and his pontificating nonsense on TLL every week, but I agree with his sentiments here, which he expressed on his radio show this morning.

    https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/rte-star-ryan-tubridy-gives-23481318

“Have you noticed how the language of lockdown has morphed into a great sense of unending eternity. Before it was six weeks, then it'll be reviewed, and now it's 'much later'
The Government has now become my parents in 1982, where they say: 'We'll see'.
These are the words no boy or girl in Ireland ever wanted to be told by their parents, because it meant nothing. Can we go to McDonalds? We'll see.
They didn't say no, but they definitely didn't say yes.
"Can we go and see Raiders of the Lost Ark on Saturday? We'll see. There's not a chance I was going to see Raiders of the Lost Ark on Saturday.
"Can we go to the barbers and the hairdressers in four weeks' time? We'll see.
    "It's never going to happen.
"What about six weeks' time? It may be much later, we'll see.
An exasperated Tubs added: "Double down, why don't you."

I’m so glad he has said this. It’s about time and hopefully it will encourage those in a similar position to come out and assert the same. “Hold firm”, “stay strong”, “double down”.. for fcuking what?! Another long drawn out continuation of nothingness?! No thanks!

    What!!!!

Seen this so many times on Twitter. Photo of vaguely crowded outdoor scene followed by a plaintive caption of "We don't stand a chance".

It's ok, once the 5km is in place which is forcing people in heavily populated parts of Dublin to crowd in small parks because they have nowhere else to go it's fine. The magic 5km ring will protect everybody. However if a quarter of that amount are seen somewhere else outdoors when the magic 5km ring is gone they are all covid spreading monsters

St Annes Park is like something out of The Walking Dead these days. Just zombies trudging dolefully up and down hardly saying a word to each other.

Does me the world of good to get out of the area for a change of scenery and get up the hills or walk a beach or something different.

Something you 100% agree with as you have stated in the past.

They are still restrictions. I also agree that they make sense right now and would have made even more sense 12 months ago. However, once we get to whatever magical figure they seem herd immunity to be at (60/70/80%) they should be dropped immediately.

The strategy is - Lets stay Locked down at level 5 forever - ther will always be the variant scare - maybe at Christmas we can go to level 4 - That way ther is zero risk , doesnt matter that most normal people actually want to start living again.

The ability to continue to borrow tens of billions of euros will not remain an option. It is very easy for a politician to dodge making hard decisions by throwing taxpayers money at a problem, even easier to throw borrowed money at it.

The economy is being kept artificially alive by indebting future generations - the sooner politicians are prevented from mortgaging our kids and grandkids futures the sooner people wake up to the cost of this hysterical nonsense, the better.

At this stage, it seems like the only wake-up call that will bring an end to this stupidity.

They are making rods for the own backs the longer they play the public and the longer this goes on. I’ve always been amazed at how quickly people just rolled over and relented but I think the tide is starting to turn. Nobody wants this to continue on into April and there isn’t a chance in hell that people will still comply with the 5k limit until then. Little breaches like that will start creeping in, if they haven’t already. You cannot just take take take all the time from the public and give absolutely nothing back. I think most reasonable people saw a need for restrictions back in January but there’s no reason why retail, hair salons, gyms and county travel cannot be allowed by mid March. I think most of us can accept hospitality being kept closed until after Easter. I’m just aghast at how quickly people roll over and accept the taking away of not only their freedom but any purpose in life. I would hope that once they announce this new “plan” that people won’t tolerate it and revolt but I’ve thought that the last few times too and nothing has changed. Despite quite a lot of people not being happy with it, the shoulders are shrugged and it’s just accepted. I know this post is all over the place in terms of what I think people will tolerate but it’s anyone’s guess at this stage. It’s just all so, soooo depressing.

So the earlier than expected deaths of those in this age group matter less because they don't have long left?

They are above life expectancy. Quite the opposite to earlier than expected deaths. They’ve lived longer than one can expect to live for.

Your post isn't all over the place. It's perfectly clear and your frustration is very palpable. And I share it 100%. What I find the most depressing is the complete lack of opposition. There's no debate, no discussion, it's whatever the Govt and Nphet says. And that's that. I just so very much happy that we may be starting to see the beginnings of a fight back. I too am just aghast at how much Irish people are prepared to take. It's actually becoming scary.

We had all the "debate" last summer and up until the Autumn.

There will be no 2nd wave, we have reached herd immunity, let it rip, care home staff can just move into care homes, etc. They have all fúcked off.

I don't know what "fight back" you are looking for, but the basis of it needs to be science and fact based and not what the like of Boylan dribbles out to whip up the permanently outraged.

I think we can all see with our own eyes the spread that has happened and can happen in bar and restaurant settings so fair enough not reopening them.

I've seen zero data that hairdressers or gyms as examples are increasing spread by a huge amount. If thats there, then they should publish it. If not, open them up once cases start dropping past 500 on 5 or 7 day averages.
