My query is why a 787 flight from london to a small regional airport in northern norway? I'm doubtful that there was a freight load going either direction that needed such a large aircraft

As de biz says, cargo service only for the seafood industry.

Just flew into Luton, the airspace is so empty, literally didn’t hear another plane since the French FIR.

It's all a bit dire, UK traffic is about 20% of 2019 currently and Saturday evenings/Sunday mornings are particularly dead.
LTN was the second busiest in the UK yesterday with 65 movements, a normal Saturday in January would be around 280. :(

I might go an hour or 2 now without talking to a single crew. It is bleak. Traffic is going down too due countries bringing in even stricter travel requirements. Everyone is pretty down. New variants, lockdowns with no end in sight, vaccine delays. I think the hope that we might get a decent summer in the industry has been crushed in people.

My thoughts exactly. The new year was looking positive. Last 2-3 weeks have crushed that hope.

A Dash 8 flew in to Dublin this morning from Iceland and is now going south over France. Would that be a new aircraft delivery coming from Canada to a customer?

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,045 ✭✭✭✭smurfjed

I had to laugh, when our 2nd crew called for start, they were told that we had a one hour delay due to SLOT TIME. In that time I literally didn’t see one other aircraft move in Luton.

I assumed that the quietness on the European frequencies was due to CPDLC-ATN, but I had expected London to be busier.

@roadmaster, yes, from manufacturer to airline.

FR24 is often guessing with destinations for cargo aircraft as their schedules are less predictable than passenger flights.

That’s a regular (almost daily?) flight into Shannon.

A cargo plane from Germany (Saab 340af) seems like a long way for such a small cargo plane.

    AEG491 from Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden to Dublin https://fr24.com/AEG491/26ba8e9d

Could be although I think I remember someone on here saying that the Air Corps was doing the transport of Covid tests?

I see that Lufthansa A350 D-AIXP is now returning non-stop from Mount Pleasant in the Falkland Islands to Munich.

    https://www.flightradar24.com/DLH2575/26bcf620

The southbound flight from Hamburg on Sunday was Lufthansa's longest ever flight.

    https://en.mercopress.com/2021/02/02/lufthansa-lands-in-falklands-with-scientists-returns-to-germany-on-wednesday

Incidentally it's passing the twice weekly "air bridge" flight between RAF Brize Norton & Mount Pleasant (operated by Air Tanker A330 G-VYGJ) at Dakar in Senegal where that aircraft is landing to refuel and change crews en route to Mount Pleasant.

US air force Beachcraft C-12C heading out over the Atlantic after a stopover in Shannon, looks like it's some kind of executive transport.

There is talk about removing the Atlantic organised track structure and replacing it with more fuel efficient random routes. One one of the benefits of CPDLC and ADS-B.

Plane just flew overhead near Hodson Bay (Roscommon) very low (100m or so). Not on Flightradar that I can see.

Any ideas what it could be? Did not seem like military (more private type aircraft), and seemed too low for radar mapping. Was travelling a bit fast for me to get a picture but did get a decent look.

(Its not this one by the way https://www.flightradar24.com/BIO05/26c04eb3 this was approx 10mins later in same area)

Must be due to less frequency of flights so they try and fill a 330..

I guess also that the 787 is for cargo rather than passengers...
