Anyone know why Irish 258 was in ESSL yesterday? Heard them as we were in Polaris airspace (Norway) about to go oceanic.

It's not every day you see an A330 flying transatlantic taking off form RWY 16!

No but when the wind is strong from the southeast it's fairly standard practice - including to the US West Coast (pre-Covid, of course).

Just out of curiosity why FR24 why are some aircraft tracked by satellite and some in the same area seem to be tracked by ground based receivers?

Here is a link to what I mean.

In recent years most new aircraft are being fitted with satellite RX/TX thus capable of control via satellite.
Some older aircraft are being retro fitted but is is expensive.

Not all aircraft have satellite capability thus a dual system.

For Atlantic coverage at any rate, the system for non fitted aircraft is usually as follows:

Aircraft westbound are controlled up to 15w by Shannon voice and radar (within range)

15-30W By Shanwick voice only . This is a control center in Prestwick Scotland , working with a communications center at Ballygirreen Co Clare (Shannon).

30W onwards is either Gander (Canada) or New York again voice only until within radar range.

For Atlantic coverage at any rate, the system for non fitted aircraft is usually as follows:
From the 27th Feb, the aircraft must be equipped with CPDLC-FANS and ADS-C to be allowed in the NAT-HLA, it must also be equipped with ADS-B-V2 to be allowed in European airspace or USA airspace.

Anyone know what plane came into Dublin about 7 minutes ago? It was probably just cargo-big plane, no windows and painted all plain grey.
It came in just after a Qatari airline.

This cargo 747 is apparently returning to Shannon after dumping fuel. Lost an engine.

There was a very low flying plane over gort today... Was pretty large and engines seemed to be smoking. Thought it was going to crash but was gone over the trees and no sign when I got out to look. Any ideas?

There was a cargo 747 that had an engine failure and had to turn back and land at Shannon that was probably the plane that you saw.

It was way too low to get to Shannon! I didn't think it was going to make it another mile

The smoke you seen was the 747 jettisoning fuel. It flew over north Clare then out to sea at 3000 feet. Returned for a safe landing in Shannon about 55 minutes later.

Saw her take off today. Was sure I saw an orange flash from engine 2 just after she took off, but then didn't see any smoke so I thought I imagined it at the time. Obviously I wasn't going mad then.

Sounds like it could have been a bird ingested into the effected engine or perhaps one of the fan blades. I wonder whether we will even find out what happened.
