I know that mart well and I agree with you completely.

Some lads just love to have something to complain about. If they want to view the stock all they’ve to do is drive down there, book a time and go in and view them. It’s no big mystery really.

The point I was making is whether you are there or not the auctioneer can’t give them to you any cheaper.

Ya true. Even though the last few weeks I've a few bought & I'm not buying any more without seeing them first.

Some amount of cattle gone through there this week. Over 10 hours selling today. Bulls and cows there yesterday and a 6 or 7 hour weanling sale there Wednesday night. There’s a lot of marts up and down the country could do with looking in there to see how it’s done!!

Friend dropped off a load today, he was 2 and a half hours getting in & out.

Thinking of offloading heavier cattle before grass. What would Ch and LM Blks 500+ kg possibly make?

Sold 2 planish Lim Blks during the week 18months 510kg made 1170.

HoHee thanks for that. The CH are good 100% CH. The LM are also good, all from sucklers. They are organic and not sure they'd make any extra at an organic sale. It would be a 90 mile trip to Kilmallock in late March. If I got €1200+ I'd be satisfied. I could push them a bit with ration over the next two months but it would be organic and would it pay back?

Would you not consider finishing them. What is the organic base price. A lot of them nice CH bullocks especially will put on flesh fast and kill out fairly well. 8kgs and silage for 60 days would really flesh them up and they would killout fairly well. It should be fairly easy to get them to a 330 kg DW.

I'd be expecting €2.40 or more conventionally so €1200 shouldn't be a problem atm. Forward stores are usually a solid trade at all times in the organic market (there's a surplus of weanlings/long keep cattle but a deficit of short keep stock). Come the spring time the trade usually reaches fever pitch as summer grazers make up a large percentage of organic farmer's at least here in the West.

However it's a long time from now until then and those sort of stock will eat plenty between now and then. As Bass has mentioned would finishing them be an option? It might not take an awful amount more to fatten as opposed to store them on good quality silage.

You did alright there, I sold two bullocks, both around 20months, 535 kg & 555kg for 1190 & 1200, was disappointed with the 1st one as he was the heavier but first bullock in that day, the first wa was the heavier & made the 1200

Thanks lads. TMK one would have to book in the Organic stock a good bit in advance to Cahir/Slaney. I have no problem with them taking a few each month which is their preferred option. I have 16 heavier ones and 13 for later. Also some following weanlings.
Know an organic lad 7 miles away and will ring him for advice too. Would want to finish some out of the house, a dozen, as I hate overstocking on grass esp in organic, there's no plan b of throwing out a bit more bag.
Have a small bit of redstart too could put some on it with silage.

Sorry if this side tracked the thread.

Dont tell my wife. Either she will think I like big butts on other women, or worse again, she will believe that I think she has a big bum. Neither outcome is good for Grueller.

Very good, is it just me or does there seem to be a lot less cattle, especially weanlings, passing through there, especially in the last year.

Lot more private sales Id guess at? The number of ´runners´ going through after sucks is getting to be a joke too.

    There’s lots of factors
Main is some farmers have gone dairying, others have gone to dry stock, some have down scaled and allot of planting too
I remember helping to pen weanlings in Carrigallen at this time of night back 25+ years ago (showing my age)
    Probably all cattle gone now

Think its gone down hill in the last two years myself. Used to sell all weanlings there but stopped going with heifers to it last year as proces were better elsewhere
Seems to be a bit of messing going on around the rings there that wasnt in it 3-4 years ago.

Seems to be a bit of messing in the last few years alright, but sure I was happy today & that's the main thing at the end of the day!

Noticed the exact same as myself, sold a few in last year and it will be the last time I ever sell in it.

Sold a 360KG peach of Lim weanling bull last October only went €600....found out after a member of the mart staff had bought him...had him again in carrigallen mart 2 weeks later.....

Mohill and Dowra probably taking from it a bit the last few years as well

Always ask who's bought mine....and I will find out if I'm told wrong info!

It's not a town I'd frequent but I'd know a fair few men that would be in it weekly. There's supposed to be a lot of weanlings that would usually be showed there going to Dowra and to a lesser extent Mohill in the last 12 month's. I regularly see a lot of staunch Carrigallen supporters showing cows in another Leitrim mart in the last year so there's bound to be a reduction in throughput.
