    Dare I suggest this? :pac:

Theres something strangely alluring about it. Surprisingly enough its an original Irish car too

How is that a Luxobarge - it is a van on van tax!

Who qualifies to drive on that tax rate? Do you have to be a tradesman?

There are numerous Range Rovers out there on crew cab tax, and a few LS430s on 1.8 (€636) tax. The numbers on the tax disc makes a yoke no more or less a barge. Though the question of whether an Explorer is a barge is a different question in its own right

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,586 ✭✭✭KevRossi

I'd put that particular Explorer down as a barge. V8 engine, size, equipment level all tick those relevant boxes. A somewhat uncouth barge, but a barge nonetheless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭Lurching

For me, it just sneaks in as a luxobarge.
Looking at those seats, and with a V8, it has loaf-factor.

An actual canal barge would handle better than it. Have had them and its bigger brother the expedition as a rental in the US and a LWB HR Transit is like a go cart by comparison. I'm not sure how to describe the cornering - you turn in, nothing, nothing, turn a bit more and then it falls over and goes around in some sort of weird way. Maybe teh suspension is made of some sort of custard? Gets old very quick.

So it might be leather and V8 so borderline barge but not a luxobarge as they tend to ride and handle reasonably well for their size

    I'd consider anything that's got a 4.0 V8 a luxobarge tbh.

I wonder if they "americanised" the suspension to make it softer?

Those Explorers certainly handle like a barge anyway and you just waft around in them so it certainly qualifies for this thread..

Big leather ELECTRIC seats, big dirty V8, big wafty auto-box... Barge that is :D

I hate to pi55 on your parade but they don't have a V8.

    4.0 SOHC V6 with a whopping 160bhp

    Indeed, gutless thing.

If it's not it'd be less gutless I suppose :pac:
Don't think I've ever seen one in Ireland.................

As tragic as a 4.0 V6 sounds, that yoke just gets more appealing the more I look at it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,241 ✭✭✭Lurching

    It's all relative.
An S280 is a luxobarge all day long - with a straight 6.

When you're wafting, you don't need to be in a hurry!

    Yeah not a luxobarge!

Seems to be two versions available in Europe with 160 and 207 bhp .

    Anyway, more barges....
This is from a Jaguar specialist, can't remember if it was posted before. Looks good, NCT 09/21. €4,950

I've a W220 S280 and great for wafting but also handles better than it should for its size but it has a proper luxo barge air suspension.

That Explorer is closer to closed in pickup in my opinion than a car. I wouldn't be surpirsed if the rear was leaf springs.

What price would they have been back in the day? USD25-30k??? The same year M Class Merc must have been another 20-30k on top when new. The S-Class 50k more I'm gussing.

I might consult Dr Google later if I have time as it would be intersting to see.

    Fair points.
Maybe we should have another thread for "Obnoxiously large American wagon (sub5k) of the week/day"

Nice, but I'd hold out for a V8.

That said there was a stunning red XJ6 on donedeal a few weeks ago. If only it had the bigger engine..

The XJ was Jag's competitor to the 5 Series, tho I think 5 Series are not classed as luxobarges here too ;)

XJ was a direct competitor to the S-Klasse, 7er and A8. That car above is 5.0m long. They had V12 engines 15 years before BMW got down to it and almost two decades before Mercedes.

You may be confusing it with the XF.

I think the S type (and later XF) were 5 series competitors

    Yes! My mistake.

Thats a tidy jag and the red one was a beauty.

The only thing I'm not mad about is the green lighting. Minor detail and probably exagerated by the camera but it always catches my eye for some reason. They just look so classy from the outside - great design IMO. I could be tempted by the right one down the road.

I must agree that bright green lighting in the instrument panel in particular does look horrendous in the photos at least. They are a class motor though. Something different from the usual common as muck Audi, BMW, Merc.

It is green alright but I think the photos make it look more green than it is. My Jag has the same green lights and I couldn't put up with the headache inducing green depicted in those photos.

I think someone went a bit nuts with the saturation filter.
