"not governed to 155mph 'apparently' " bet this was in the Garda thread at some point :pac:

also nice spec but no fingerprint start which id imagine should have been standard in SA...

    Looks in great condition.

I don't see it in the details and can't tell from the pics but has it heated seats? Curious as its an SA car. My w220 is a Singapore import so no heated seats or sunroof - not relevent in that climate. The local market quirks are always interesting.

Bit odd the reg on that A8 if it was an import, should be in the 60-70k (or more) or so numbers and not 5k.

You could reserve numbers for imports back then.

The spec seems to be pretty poor on it TBH. The button for the heated seats should be just above the red light on the climate control knob, and it looks to be blank

No heated seats (or climate control) in the rear either

    Heres a reasonably well spec'd A8L 4.2 V8 with brand new NCT for €4950

Wheels need frisbeeing into a lake though

    A few things.
It lists it as country of registration Ireland, but it being an import from SA may be an issue for insurance.
The DoneDeal ad says private seller, but MotorTax says
Purchased by a Dealer on: 01/12/2020
Then the price, for less than half you get this, which has the back seat climate control, and a longer NCT. Now, it does have about two and a half times the mileage, but I'd wonder how much mileage was on above car before it entered Ireland.... if any?

Would every import not say that it's country of registration is Ireland, meaning it's now on an Irish reg?
Being a SA import surely wouldn't factor at this stage?

Once a car is registered here the country of registration is Ireland, but insurers will still be interested in where it was first registered

Yeah, sorry, this is what I meant. The insurer would probably have experience of cars being imported from the UK or Japan, but I wonder what their reaction would be for a 16 year old car from SA, even if it was from an ex-British colony?

not all, at least in my experience. my last two cars were UK imports, when trying to insure it first time (E90) and *RANG* AXA then they necer asked for it. When renewing it for F10, again, rang AXA and they only wanted Reg and value

IIRC, on insurance forms there is ( or used to be ) a specific question about imported Japanese cars, as their repair costs were much higher, so they charged a higher premium cost. How that worked out for cars sourced in other countrys, I dont know.

I’ve imported cars from Singapore and Japan, people have got insured on them no problem

The problem is when stuff like a Toyota Vitz or Honda Fitt is imported and its not on the insurance data base, it’s basically computer says no. Not all insurers but some. UK import doesn’t actually count as an import, sometimes it will specifically say excluding UK

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,239 ✭✭✭Lurching

I've only ever been asked if my car was originally registered in Japan.
    Specifically Japan.

Most of the time insurers don't care except Japan because of the historically high incident rates with Japanese imports. UK/SA etc.... imports wouldn't cause as many statistical issues.

I've only encountered the question with japanese imports. Never asked on any of the other stuff.

It's also to do with the repair costs. Panels and lights are often unique to the Japanese market. People like Toyota or Nissan are under no obligation to provide parts for cars that they did not sell as new here, so you are often looking for parts directly from Japan or from a specialist in the UK or elsewhere.

Very popular cars like the Figaro are cheaper to insure than others, partly because of this reason.

It's the same on the Revenue VRT Calculator - specifically asking if an import was originally registered in Japan

When I had an Integra Type R I wanted to get some bits from Honda here in Ireland and I had to provide them several of the serial codes on the car before they even agreed to tell me they could or couldn't get them. They wouldn't consider any sort of a request if it was a Japanese import.

That was just a bad parts department... Honda system is no different between EUDM, JDM, USDM or even AUDM cars

Looks like it's UK registered as well, so be prepared to bend over 3 times; VRT, VAT and NCT repairs. :)

The wheels look all wrong as if he used some filter on the camera.

It’s strange, it’s down a a UK Reg but it specify as when the Nct was expired (jan 2020) and he mentions Nct specifically too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,456 ✭✭✭KevRossi

I think this was on here not that long ago, the reg looks familiar. Gave it a good clean and polish which is nice, few small marks on it, probably get classic insurance on it too and sell it in a couple of years for no depreciation. Plenty of receipts and €300 of tax on it, so realistically available for under €5K. Has a video as well which is good.

    2001, 740i, NCT 01/22, 2 months tax. €5,500
