Ah crap. Had randomly wandered in there a bit over a year ago, was a nice pub, would definitely have gone back next time I was in the area.

They seemed to have the worst luck just getting that place off the ground, bonobo opening 2 doors up while it was still being renovated can't have helped......

That's what it was. We'd actually gone to Bonobo but it was wedged and a bit crap so left, Taproom next door was really nice. Was pretty empty though, which probably didn't bode well.

They must have spent a fair bit renovating it too. Pity.

I don't like bonobo, but I haven't been in in over a year, when the world is back to normal I might give it a go.

Apparently there was an issue with the sewerage which cost them a lot of money, and by the time they fixed it, the tap crowd migrated to delaneys, the Richmond crowd followed ronan to the King's Inn and bonobo took the craft/cocktail crowd. Horrible luck all around for them.

My Goodness, Where am I going to get a Pint when I get to Ireland next? Year

We're at like 10 confirmed closures from about 1000 licenced pubs in Dublin.

My partner really likes Soup, so I'll probably end up in here quite a lot.

The Taproom 47 operators got basically 3 months, after a multi year process getting the place going again.

Day I visited, Bonobo was rammed also - went to T47 on purpose, had a few pints; went to Bonobo to eat a pizza at an outdoor table as there was nowhere else; then back to T47 for another pint and to warm back up!

What was that pub on Eden Quay close to where the Laughter Lounge and Jimmy Chungs is? Remember being in it around 1992. The building is still there.

There was a bar called SPI back in the early-noughties before it turned into a lapdance/casino place.

It was The Horse & Tram when it was a proper pub, pre-Tiger.

Was the Liffeyside Mooney before the Horse & Tram era.

Was up for sale in 2019 as 'perfect to return to pub use', which is legally challenging to say the least when the licence has been transferred away as is the case here. Ruined remains of a clock on the outside, like most JG Mooney pubs had

How many pubs did the Mooneys have at the most? I love looking at the PTSB on Baggot Street with Mooneys name above it.

    12 - 9 in Dublin, 3 in London - was the peak I believe.

I've done a list here (and for Beltons, the other big chain of the time that's gone - Madigan Group survives)

Hmm. There's a bit in the Snapper novel where Mr. Burgess wants to meet Sharon at the Abbey Mooney. Never knew where that was.

Still some bits of the signage up for it, it's also a PTSB branch coincidentally - Abbey Street side of the O'Connell Street branch

    Interesting article.

I noted you say “ their political persuasion should be determinable from the name” in reference to the pub on Collins Avenue which you have listed as the 19th. Care to educate me please? I don’t get the reference.

He developed the entire area and named the road Collins Avenue. Beltons were FG all the way. The current name of the pub is probably more suitable but I'm not sure if it was renamed during their ownership!

The penny just dropped. I thought you meant the pub name rather than the street.

As regards to the current name I’m pretty sure it’s more recent than the 1987 date you have for the group’s liquidation so not under their ownership at the time. It was still The Jolly Beggarman in the 90s I’m sure. And even though it’s not a million miles from me the only reason I know that is I remember the “Jolly Beggarman on Tour” flag at the Ireland games under Charlton :)

Ah yes, "The Happy Knacker" or Jolly Beggarman. Brings back memories.

Speaking of the Snapper and I probably missed it mentioned already but the Foxhound is gone.

Been on the market for over two years. I think the asking price was around 800,000

Been bought apparently, apartments is the rumour.

    Wouldn't fancy an apartment there.

At the front you'll have a car park to a busy shopping centre and at the back you'll have the laneway for the centra delivery trucks.

True, if you are a light sleeper, trucks pulling in, unloading etc at 6am... not ideal.

Plus side, you won’t have far to go for your shop.

There was a pub in Crumlin (at the junction of St Agnes' Rd and Windmill Road) which some people still called Mooney's about 40 years ago. Can't remember the actual name it had at the time. It was called something else again and the most recent name was The Hub. From the state of it on street view it looks like it's been closed for a few years. AFAIK the name "The Shaw Arms" is still there high up on the wall and that name pre-dated Mooney's.

    Life ain't always empty.

Walked down Meath st today, saw the doors to The Lark Inn opened and work going on inside, as well as some heavy machinery setting up out front. Was it sold/another victim of covid?

I just asked the oul lad there, a former Crumlin resident and a regular in The Crest/Frehill's, and he's normally a mine for this info and he can't remember it being called anything other than Mooney's.

    Time for L1011 to shine!

Signs were taken down months ago but not heard anything either way since.

As for the Mooneys in Crumlin - not the most uncommon surname, don't think it was ever JG Mooney but I'll check.

edit: 1986 its The Shaw Arms, proprietor Ann Mooney - so not a JG Mooney pub. Would guess the Shaw was an official name that was rarely used and Mooneys what everyone called it. Same in 1980 directory.

The heavy machinery has been outside there for a good few months now.

It mentioned that the Magic Carpet has been bought by Dunnes. That is a surprise, given that Dunnes have such a large campus just down the road.
The pub has been there long before the area was developed, it really is a shame to see it go.
