It closed NYE 2018 as far as I know so your 2019 might be wrong.

It was only open for a single staff shift, eight hours five days, for the time before it closed.

There was another pub on the 3rd corner - McGettigans. Pretty rough and locals-only.

Ryans and Dice were great.

Was? Is. Refurbished extensively in the past few years.


Token has opened recently just up the road and the Hendrick Hotel around the corner with a full bar also.

globe was far from my favourite pub, but not did serve later than most which I enjoyed.


it's such a pity that you don't really get many places in dublin where you can actually talk and have a pint withoutt music blast past the usual last orders of 12.30/1:00

Dice had Veltins and Grevensteiner on tap which was great. Was a handy place with decent music to start night off before heading across to Ryans or jumping the Luas up to town. All that seems so long ago now. Strolled through town this evening and desperate seeing everything shuttered. Palace were doing a good trade with takeaway hot whiskeys and the like at least.

You're correct in saying that it was refurbished and under new ownership/management and with a very different clientele

It's the same owners! McGettigan Group which actually started out from that pub.

Staff costs, particularly in the remaining unionised pubs where each hour would be dearer than the last. Security firm may charge quite significantly more for the last hour too.

Insurance is considerably higher too the later you open.

actually looks like I was wrong after a short google, seems extensions are by the hour, not automatically till 2.30 so that makes perfect sense so if that's the case

I just learned today that Shanahan's at 25 The Coombe is now a restaurant called Spitalfields.

Lived on Cork St back in 2012/13/14 and used to drop in there on the way home from work, sound bartenders and friendly locals. Sad to see it gone.

That's a interesting one. I dropped in there pre-pandemic as i knew a few of the friendly locals who were refugees from Fallon's. Despite the makeover and move upmarket they were still drinking their afternoon pints at the bar.

Good to know. From checking the pics online and their website I thought it went full hip restaurant. Good you can still have just pints there.

have any other pubs announced they closing other than dice bar? seems to be scaremongering that we're going to lose every pub in ireland but doesn't really seem to be the case at all

The reopening for food pubs in the summer, pubs getting used to takeaway food/drink, the rates and licence costs being cancelled for the year and then the CRSS subsidy in the budget has reduced the number of places saying they're not reopening; but there was a fair few a few months ago:

Donaghmede Inn
Cardiff Inn
Bakers, Thomas Street
Pimlico Inn
McCanns, James Street
Queens, Dalkey

Nothing official but I'd be very surprised if Bradys Castleknock ever reopens, as its boarded up and planning is in to knock it. Have seen a few other pubs with the signage down - Taproom 47 North King Street and the Lark Inn Meath Street - but that could mean nothing.

Scaremongering? Sure they're all grand.

Announcing you're closing while staff are getting by on PUP etc. would be a pretty stupid. There will be plenty of places that can't reopen but are literally relying on the government to put food on the table for Christmas.

The one that's a casino or something now? That'd be the old horse and tram if so, the one where john lydon once got into a fracas and ended up in the joy for his troubles. Was a grand spot for a drink really, along with Tommy Wrights over on the quay opposite.

Ah crap. Had randomly wandered in there a bit over a year ago, was a nice pub, would definitely have gone back next time I was in the area.
