The travel in and out of Ireland has been a shambles since this pandemic hit, we cannot go more than 5km now but anyone can travel here without a test or even follow up, the government and NPHET need to be firm and strict at airports and ferry ports

Was wondering was there some other opposition to it somewhere that has prevented it until now because it seems like such a simple thing. Was thinking were government afraid of upsetting US companies/affecting FDI with workers travelling for business but so much of that can take place online. Maybe it's just sheer incompetence. Just seems hard to comprehend why it's taken so long and then when it's brought in why it seems so half arsed.

Nope, all clear. Very little garda activity this time round, seem more concerned catching people going up the mountains at the weekend.

More easily accomplished when the testing / tracing system isn't functioning properly.
At these levels they are now close to the point where they can reactivate it again fully.

RIP Solson Saviour. So close to the vaccines being rolled out too.

We owe so much to the HCWs. A lot of the rest of us can limit our exposure to covid19 but there's no option for those working on the front line in our hospitals and nursing homes.

It makes me angry that so many are giving so much and being so selfless throughout this pandemic and others are whinging because they can't meet friends for a coffee or their freedom is being impacted.

Everyone who can limit contacts should in support of everyone who hasn't the option. Yes, it's ****, yes, it's boring, lonely, etc but there are thousands in this country who don't have options and have to go to hospitals and nursing homes in pressurised, difficult and upsetting conditions at the moment.

This is a beautiful message. I'm going to quote it because I think it's worth repeating. My thoughts exactly.

Yes poorly answered by Tony. Fergal Bowers in fairness to him is one of the best journalists we have.

He is not sugar coating anything, he is not rocking the boat either, but he remains calm and factual. He is a welcome balance to George Lee.

Recently I bought a small supply while they are still reasonably affordable. Just got this feeling..

Ah yeah I get he can't be too critical but could even say ''ideally nobody should be entering without a negative'' test or something.

Surely borders at airports are one of the easiest things to enforce? No negative test, a fine and have to pay for your own flight back. Would act as a deterrent then.

Ireland is the only country that doesn’t enforce that now, right? It have we started?

Good to see deaths back down to single figures after some of the numbers over the past week or so. Hopefully those big numbers are behind us.

How many times can you use them?

(Or rather how many times are you supposed to use them - coming from someone who wears his single use more than a single time)

The FPP2 masks would be counter productive?

In an ideal world, you might consider them however if required for masses of the population, aint going to work!

They can be sterilised a good few times, preferably by UV light or 30 minutes at 75 degrees celsius.

90% public approval for mandatory quarantine for airline passengers. We always hear of the government making "tough" decisions, which usually mean ordinary people have to suffer. It's time they honoured the enormous sacrifices the public have made three times by doing what needs to be done on international travel. It's almost certain that we'll have to do this a 4th time if they don't.

Sadly not. This is Monday and few deaths are registered at the weekend. At 0.5% mortality the 5,000 odd cases recently will result in 25 or so deaths.

    They aren't.

Im sorry but they definitely aren't.

I really wish at the start of this thing they brought in better death reporting. The system sucks.

It's nice to be in single digits but numbers will grow simply based on the numbers in hospital and ICU.

Any mention on an extension to current restrictions.
It was initially confirmed for the end of this month if I recall correctly but surely it's going to be extended?

Hold on....people think we can eradicate the virus on this island?

Im sorry but that is pretty much impossible, there will always be flare ups when society opens withouth vaccine, this virus is in endemic and will always be with us

Well, at the moment the cases are twice as bad roughly per day as it got in the first wave when we had a proper lock down. That did the trick and got the cases down very low and practically got rid of covid 19 for the summer.

With the current level 4.2 lockdown it will take a lot longer to get the cases down below 50 which you would probably need to be at to have a think of lifting restrictions.

To accelerate the case reduction, they should limit people to 2km and close everything that was closed during the first wave for a 3 week period. That would make a big difference in reducing cases. Current lockdown is too loose and therefore too slow to work. Between this and the vaccine roll out we are a joke shop.

No evidence to date that the death was caused by the vaccine.

Roughly 1% of people who are clinical frailty scale 9 die every day.

    Corelation does not mean causation.

Funny how when anybody says the same about end of life patients die shortly after testing positive for Covid they get shot down.

I know a porter in Mercy hospital Cork who tested positive in April and again just this week.

Strong evidence from the Crotty lab that infection will protect against reinfection. Antibodies persist for at least 8 months.

    This was over 8 months.

Cases load probably the same as we weren't testing 20,000 a day in the 1st wave. What in the level 5 restrictions was different then to now? I don't believe this part of the world has proper lock downs especially when people continue to fly in here without a test.
