I don't see why Republicans wouldn't move to impeach Trump along with the Dems.
It's an opportunity to put Trump to pasture permanently and quickly get some closure on Trumpism so they can reclaim some of those conservative 'principles' they used to talk about.

No point reclaiming principles if your voter base is now largely a personality cult to one deranged lunatic who is about to leave office.

Trump's votes don't transfer. He's going to take those worshipping hordes with him and they are scared to death of that, which is why so many of them STILL can't make a break.

What is he going to do with that following?
He can't win in 2024 ( might even be barred from public office)
When Trump disappears that voter base will look elsewhere (but who would want them?)

Because he commands a fair base of their vote. To impeach him would be to alienate those voters

They could impeach and convict him in the morning, technically barring him from future public office and that would have zero impact on his ability to raise funding over the next couple of years by telling them he's going to run again.

Trump could say the sky is pink and the moon is made of cheese, and they would go along with it.

All these GOP politicians and even Pence himself have their own designs on big jobs in the future and they know, one way or another, their popularity with 50/60/70 million voters lies with kissing Trump's arse.

Edit - the only way Trump disappears is if he's actually jailed or flees the country. Even then, I wouldn't be certain his presence wouldn't be felt to some degree.

What do you think Josh Hawley, Ted Cruz, Mo Brooks, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert and others are doing in their words and actions since the election?

Notable that the AG and FBI director didn't attend a briefing on a domestic terrorist attack, a briefing almost a week after the fact.

And then you have this nonsense near enough to when the press conference occurred.

One thing that concerns those analysing the attack is, the detail of the layout of the buildings, that some of the rioters had.

But Trump was immediately out with a press release concerning the death of billionaire Vegas casino owner who's a huge contributor to GOP.

A couple of cops are under investigation, as well as members of the military, for being involved. On the day there was videos and eye witness accounts of insurrectionists being given directions to different offices within the Capitol building.

Recently elected GOP state official Derrick Evans is being federally charged with participation.

At least he admired someone who did something he failed at himself, make money out of a casino.

Nice of Trump to include in his Texas speech on the "witch-hunt" to tell those pushing for his 25th amendment impeachment to be careful as they might get what they wish for.

According to the NYT, it looks like McConnell is now open to the idea of impeachment. More as a way of purging Trumpism from the party of course, but every little bit helps.
Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, has told associates that he believes President Trump committed impeachable offenses and that he is pleased that Democrats are moving to impeach him, believing that it will make it easier to purge him from the party, according to people familiar with his thinking.

    Well well well:
On Eve of House Vote, McConnell Is Said to Be Pleased About Effort to Impeach Trump
Senator Mitch McConnell is said to believe that the impeachment effort will make it easier to purge President Trump from the party. And Representative Kevin McCarthy has asked other Republicans whether he should call on Mr. Trump to resign in the aftermath of the Capitol siege.

This is pretty big. Imagine if they get a free vote in the Senate as well...

    Can't see it happening though.

He is so utterly desperate. As if that threat will make any difference. They can't let him off because his red neck supporters are threatening violence. Jesus.

And this is why you don't negotiate with terrorists.

Because just one of them would need to stay loyal to Trump, and so long as they had just a little bit of charisma, they would then rule the party. Those not loyal to trunp who voter (R) in November will do vote for that letter no matter whose name is beside it, and thus will not be paid any attention to.

On a security at the Capitol report, metal detectors are apparently being set up to detect if guns are being brought into the building by congresspersons and senators. A story was on public platforms last week that a newly elected member of the house, Rep Lauren Boebert [R], planned to bring a "carry-permit" Glock pistol into the house. Apparently she's a gun-rights proponent and doesn't like the Covid-19 health regulations either, deliberately opening her restaurant during a stay-at-home restriction period ordered in her state.

If McConnell is OK with the idea of the impeachment move and he's ok with the wording of the charge, then he should in theory either say AYE or decline to vote against the charge in the senate. I have to assume he is well aware that the media would welcome the revealing of such a statement to them and that there are media contacts in his friend and colleagues list.

The tunnel system is also used by members and staff to get from offices to the main building.

She's definitely on the wingnut side of the party.

CNN just had a discussion about how Dem senators and house members have long been fearful of some of the more, shall we say, colourful members bringing weapons to the Capitol.

Say that out loud. It's absolutely mind-blowing!

She was also one of the GOP congress people who refused to wear a mask while they were locked down (well of course she was) but also tweeted a couple of times about her location and also Nancy Pelosi's while locked down and after being told by police not to use social media while locked down. She is a piece of work.

He's been vilified quite a bit during this whole saga, but that's a move that would go some way toward redemption.

Doubt it. You'll see a tiny fraction go the other way. But the bulk are on the money train make no mistake.

And the money is drying up unless the GOP change course.
