Yes but that was caused by the spread of the infection before restrictions. The lockdowm worked in March. Even though there was a lot of people out and about.

    The restrictions will work now.

We've already cut services to the bone. Not quiet as far as March April but a hell of a lot of non covid care has been cut.

London ICU doctor interview. They don't have enough nurses for ICU so are drafting in other nurse or med students. It's all hands on deck there. Biggest difference with the second wave is just not stopping. Staff exhausted.

    109 in ICU

Where can I find the age profile split of these cases?

Cut their parents social welfare.. Problem solved.

Is it not also snobbery to assume someone on welfare is necessarily living in Tallaght? ;)

It will be endemic in the community. With the vulnerable vaccinated. That’s just how it will end up being, or we fundamentally change our entire way of life.

It is not going to be endemic in Australia or New Zealand, or China by the looks of it..Singapore has done really well. So have Thailand and Vietnam. Cuba, lots of African countries, Japan was doing really well up until recently, lots of remote countries etc. I doubt all those places are throwing their hands up and saying bring on the covid endemia.

Shocking numbers in the UK. Deaths 1,300 or so, 68,000 today cases today which means the worst it yet to come. Hospitals about to be overhelmed which means the death rate will also rise and potentially people who need hospital for other treatment may also suffer. Very sad to see but we need to stop flights from the UK. The risks are too high which our own health system on its knees at the minute.

As it appears to be even more rampant in the UK, can someone explain why their R number is estimated at between 1-1.4 and ours is between 2.4-3?

Yes . But the amount of younger people sick in hospital with this is quite significant atm.

    Where did you see that?

My sister lives in Blackrock, her daughter has been out with mates, 18 years old, hanging around, now her and 7 friends tested positive today.

And that's why we are fooked.

These cretins will never listen unless it effects them directly. Relative dying etc, even then, many will still do whatever they want.

This minorities behaviour wont be stopped without sanctions and enforcment.

Our govrrment irrepressibly still refuse to do it though.

It's been rampant there for longer, cases haven't been low there in months so their rate of increase is less but coming from a much higher base compared to Ireland.

    R number is growth.

We locked down in October November and brought the cases down and then we opened up and it grew like crazy.

They never brought it under control so its high but only growing slowly.

Looks like the backlog cleared message was incorrect. Deaths starting to trickle up unfortunately

No, as of yesterday there was around 8k in the backlog. Still about 4 or 5 thousand left?

My exact thoughts when i got the RTE notification just there. At least the swab watchers will realise things aren't as bad as they may seem.

    Numbers aren't declining!
    No offence Mohawk .
Testing is reduced for the last week to symptomatic cases only, and not close contacts .
Can people not understand that this is obviously going to result in reduced numbers , but the real numbers are likely 3 times higher ?

I never said they were declining at present. I was responding to a post that was discussing what the possible rate of decline will be. Will it be different this time to the last surge. And there will be a decline once the restrictions are in place long enough. Just like last April we don’t know the true number of cases that are happening right now. Once there is a reduction in people presenting with symptoms this will be evidence of less cases.

Oh yes a lot more testing being done , but only on symptomatic cases , is what I mean.

In the spring one had to show a number of symptoms to get tested.

Horrible numbers. Each of those deaths leave behind a grieving family, friends and colleagues. It's important we remember that. They aint just numbers.

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

Exactly. The comment about cutting parents social welfare was ignorant. One thing about this pandemic has thought me is that there is a lot of people who are very quick to judge. Most people are trying their best. There will always be young people who make mistakes.

They didn’t say it was sorted. They essentially said that all of the swabs to 5th January were processed. That actually implied that there was still a backlog. I can’t understand the confusion. There’s about 5,000 remaining.

Philip Nolan said yesterday the backlog was cleared up to the 5th of January. That’s another almost 4k off the backlog today. Must be down to 5/6k now.

    You won't .
The only age profile split is hospitalisations.
