Relative working in large restaurant chain was told tonight, as of tomorrow I think they said, all click and collect services suspended too for non essential retail.

So that restaurant has made a decisions to operate that way or theyhave read it somewhere?

On Prime Time earlier on, Niall Collins from FF hinted that 'Click and Collect' would be stopped, and it would be delivery only.

Eamon Ryan said for non essential retail click and collect will be stopped. Takeaways have been considered essential so far.

If schools / construction etc are closing then i see no reason not to impose full for all non essential movement out of house curfew 8PM to 7AM. I hope not but I see no reason why not.

They should do a hard lockdown and make it the last.

A curfew needs to be brought in if schools are going to be closed. It's all well and good having adults told to work from home and social distance as much as possible, then having teenagers roaming about in gangs with no social distancing, possible picking up the virus and bringing it home.

People not wearing face masks correctly(under their nose/under their chin)should be escorted of the premises regardless, unless it is worn properly.

Hmm, the only thing I can think to be effected by this would be delivery people. Would they be allowed continue to work?

Also 8pm is too early, I could see people coming home from shopping in the local supermarket been stopped and asked why they are out. 9pm/10pm may be better.

Sorry yeah, would expect takeaways to still be allowed do click and collect with control measures. I think for some people when you mention retail, they don't factor businesses that sell food or drinks into this category.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,151 ✭✭✭Mech1

Close the local shops / everything to the general public at 8pm, after that front line workers with proof only until 10pm. It would also reduce workers time spent in contact with each other. Maybe fuel stations could stay till 10pm.

Why, and who is going to enforce a curfew like that?

At this stage, I don’t know anymore!

All I do know is we cannot just keep wringing hands and tiptoeing around fragile self righteous egos, conspiracy theorists lost in la la land and those so far into denial that they basically a lost cause.

This is an unfolding national disaster at this stage. There are some very harsh realities on the horizon if we can’t control it this time, what exactly are people proposing we do?

I really never thought we would be in this serious a mess. It’s both shocking and incredibly disheartening to see it here in Ireland, the U.K., across the EU and in the US. We’re not handling this at all. It’s been an utter fiasco.

Matt Hancock is a politician, a member of the worst government in modern British history. He is a gormless prick with zero medical or scientific knowledge.

His government are desperate for any angle that will absolve them of blame for the state of their country.

Until a qualified and respected individual gives us cause for concern about any new variants, I will not be listening to any panic from the British government. Even Stephen Donnelly has his moments of panic and should be regarded with skepticism.

Be that as it may don't dismiss that these variants are concerning for a number of reasons scientifically speaking. It is super complex and probably why it's hard for anyone to say a one liner that sums it up. Important to note nothing to panic about. The fact UK and SA have sequenced thousands more samples than any other country means that there likely other variants out there evolving away. As with these ones when they get an advantage the begin to take over. UK has not seen a deterioration in morbidity although it is a small sample. We are learning that the way it evolves may in the future make vaccines or antibodies less effective in some individuals. Not surprising given what we know about the other coronavirus', think common colds.

The S.A variant is more worrying in terms of antibody escape than The UK one but UK now looks to be definitely more transmissible.

An extremely long thread of research that has just come out. Basically they were able to look at the neutralising ability of antibodies on the new variants and measure the effectiveness. As with everything in this crisis it is extremely complicated. Different mutations effect different people in different ways. Some not so much, some way more. Also the effect changes over time even in the same person.

Just because Matt Hancock is a cock doesn't mean we should dismiss the science.

Also the measures used to suppress / reduce old lineage are the same to reduce the new UK one. Same way to beat it. If it's 60% more transmissible than just try to be 60% more careful regards hygiene , ventilation, masks, distance etc.

Thats for retail only as far as I'm aware.

Food takeaway services were never subject to any restrictions on people going to collect food even during first lockdown, its deemed essential & collecting food was listed as a resosn to be outside 5k

Interesting to hear the unions and developers are saying that construction is safe. People no longer car pooling, daily checks, staggered breaks and social distancing. Why shut down something if it is low risk and ultimately essential?

Exactly or maybe at a minimum allow residential projects to contuine. Houses near completion and people need to move into them.

Banning takeaway pints would definitely get some of the people out of the city centres. I dont see why they don't

(As much as I love pints)

You also have scenarios where developers have contractual obligations and targets in terms of completions for commercial property. The consequences of this could see a confirmed tenant (expanding workforce) being able to exercise options to reduce space or even to withdraw - what is the impact of this? Jobs may be lost forever.

The takeaway pints thing is a joke. I understand why they did not ban it as it is not a simple legal fix particularly in rural areas where the pub is also the off licence.

Takeaway pints should never have been allowed in the first instance

I have a non urgent appt at radiology on Friday in an acute hospital. Really unsure now whether I should go. I had expected it to be cancelled but it hasn’t been yet.

The entire Western world really. Countries that have either more authoritarian regimes, or democracies that focus on the collective as opposed to individual rights have done it right. Thinking of China, South Korea, New Zealand as examples of both approaches. Our insistence on personal freedoms above all else is not serving us well now.

I’ve woken up very grumpy this morning.

Why are there 3 presenters on Morning Ireland? Yes, they are spread out but is it really necessary? Don’t know what it’s like with the daytime chat shows.

Cancel it yourself. I was due a blood test in my local surgery this morning, they rang me yesterday to cancel it, due to high levels of the virus in the community. I didn’t want to go anyway.

What I've learned from seeing some of Morning Ireland is that it's a terrible show!
