Wife just back in from work. She says the traffic is pretty heavy out and about no checkpoints despite her 20klms drive to and from work. Sounds like this lockdown is a farce.

Why are check points required to enforce the lockdown?

Why don't the general public just do it?

Perhaps the former Iraqi Information Minister is available to do the press conferences, would bring some entertainment to it.

It looks to me that it was the household mixing from the weekend before Christmas that did it - Growth rate only really went out of trend from the 23rd on.

    538271.JPG

Plus the cases being at a much higher rate to begin with. At least in summer restrictions were eased when cases were in single digits nationally or low double digits vs 200/300 a day cases leading up to latest easing of restrictions. Plus increased socialising inside and less likely places would be well ventilated.

Folks - We all need to eat and live so you will always have coffee shops open all be it Take out only.

Home visits would appear to account for the majority of recent increases in the virus.

The increases had started well before home visits were allowed. We were already on 1000 cases per day by the time they started.

I really don't understand the constant downplaying of the situation by lots of posters on here.

Even if people don't think it will impact them personally can they not see the impact it is having on certain sections of society and the overall economy?

Stripping out the personal suffering, the longer it goes on, the more it will cost us. Sticking ones head in the sand does not change that, in fact it may even make it worse

You can't expect everyone to agree on something. I also think you have to factor in people's own circumstances. Does lockdown affect your job? Ability to pay your mortgage? Are you now out of work living off hard-earned savings? Does the isolation of lockdown greatly impact your mental health?

I can assure you that the 744 people in hospital don't give a fluck about Tom and Mary's bills.

I’m sure Tom and Mary wouldn’t expect them too, but I ‘m not sure what the point of your comment is.

Absolutely nothing to do with the internet. I'm safe behind my screen... Panic attack was caused by people ignoring the maximum amount of people in a room, pile up and take their face masks off... I try and avoid that by leaving a bit early but I got caught up in it.

You are physically safe behind your screen. Your mental health on the other hand may be experiencing the impact of fear.

And be more believable than some of the yokes the government have put out.

A week just before christmas restrictions eased slight drop in numbers. and then about a week in the numbers start increasing. 16th start seeing 400+ and steady climb

My wife just back as well from a journey, roads very quite and met 2 checkpoints

Great to hear that. Dublin seems to be busy though

So what can we do or can we do anything to help? Do we keep windows closed to keep in heat?

No open and well ventilated indoors. We cant do anything about climatic conditions. Focus on good ventilation and try create indoor settings as close as possible to how air circulates outdoors.

Could be partly because of the absolutely ****e weather today?

Tom and Mary probably wish to be able to pay their bills and support their family. So to me they’re essential , plus most coffee shops and cafes also sell food. Something which is also quite essential. I take it you can work form home.

But so does he thousands of people who are on Pup - they have bills to pay.
This coffee shop doesn't sell food, the cafe does.

But you fail to notice that neither Tom or Mary are out enforcing social distancing, they aren't insisting anyone waiting has a mask on. They don't have a sign up - no mask no coffee for instance.

I walk further down the road to Centra and there is a lad stopping anyone from entering without a mask. No mask no entry. How many places are doing this ??

At 5k cases a day, thats higher than per capita rate of the US.

Ballinteer/Dundrum is no quieter or busier than ever, just... normal traffic. Went to Lidl, and was reasonably busy. People were noticeably giving each other a wider berth though

Yet the Drug manufacturers advise against doing this.

The second dose reinforces the first and some places are making a judgement that they can live with 70-80% efficacy in the short term. 6 months ago we would have dreamed of that level of effectivity. Its the wrong decision in my opinion, but an understandable one, but risks an immunity that does not last as long

Do you think it's people out and about visiting others or what? Seems strange considering schools off and retail mostly closed. Maybe people just out for a drive to break the boredom?

There's even some that refuse restrictions before heading.
Don't want to be inconvenienced even a tad.
Usually like to let others knowit as much as possible too.

The backlog is about 17,000. 5199 positive swabs today.

I can't help but look at this and thing we're in a much worse state than ever before.
We're fast approaching the positivity rate record we set on March 30th of 31%. But that was set on a day that we did only 1,397 tests.

I do agree with Seamus that we're flying blind to an extent, but it is starting to look more and more obvious to me that we're in uncharted territory.

    538264.png

At that stage we were likely at 10k cases / per day based on the hospitalisation rates at the time

I don’t see the need to add thousands more to the pup numbers if it can be avoided.
Thanks for the anecdotes, not sure what they add to the discussion though.

Yeah i read a few of those sorts on the relaxation of restrictions thread. They now moaning about an even harsher lockdown. Folk be strange.

Raind, you should know better than that. That's a 7 day average you're looking at, and we've barely been able to get our cases out the door for most of if not all those 7 days.

Look at it by positive test rate then

We've seen record admissions in the last few days.

It's pretty obvious we're going to eclipse the March/April records pretty soon. Even if we peak today in terms of cases, hospitalisations lag by quite a bit.

Gov literally threw a carrot out by saying, behave now and you can have a break at Christmas. License to spread it. Idiots both Gov and those milling around buying pyjamas and other unnecessary crap in crowded places, along with socialising, because they were told it was ok.

Anyway, Scotland has locked down and Johnson making an announcement at 8pm presumably a more severe lockdown with schools closed etc.

Our own Gov probably waiting, and will do the same on their coat tails.

It's not the internet causing panic attacks.

Having read about 100 pages of this thread today and most if not all of your messages, I stand by my statement, get off the internet, stop focusing on this pandemic and try to get your mental health back in-line.
