Are these numbers from the backlog or the daily tests? Christmas was only 9 days ago so i'm guessing still people waiting to be tested from the celebrations on Christmas day and most of these numbers are people mixing the days/weeks before Christmas

Today's swabs weren't released as they don't release swabs on a Sunday.

Yesterday's swabs were around 4.5k and the day before was 5.5k so it's unlikely that today's cases will be eating into the backlog in a big way.

Glancing at worldometers, it appears that on a per capita basis, we've announced more cases than any other nation on the planet today.

And that might not be all of our cases.

    Good work lads

schools will open, 100%. Even ASTI , the crazy union on radio today saying they are happy if TH says its ok.

I very much doubt they will open on 11th.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Can't wait to hear how they gonna back up that tho. If they think people gonna buy that bs look folks you can walk only 2km to save the schools, they wrong.

Start handing out on the spot high fines or arrests, agree more stricter enforcement needed, involve the army too

Pointless. There are 15,000 Guards, 10,500 Defence Forces and 5,000,000+ people.

Unless WE, all of us, take the necessary responsibility for ourselves and our families, without our hand being either held or slapped, we are shagged.

What happens when some residents of nursing home or hospitals don't want the vaccine or aren't able to give consent. what do they do if they next of kin is not contactable or wont' give consent.

Then they dont get the vaccine. We are waiting on almost 100 consent forms to be returned to us. Will be interesting to see how many families will give consent.

    2km limit
Closing schools (probably the last item on the list)
    Shutdown some healthcare services
Close more retail services (a lot of places still open)
    Enforce work-from-home

Something like that probably, so it would be similar to the March restrictions.

(I'm not saying any of these will or should happen, just thinking what the options are)

The schools is a tricky one.

It is a hard one to shut down health services. But people with seemingly minor surgical issues, may end up with significant health issues if they are delayed for too long. There will be people on the newspaper, berating the HSE because their innocent health condition became life-threatening. The backlog already is horrendous. I don't pretend to know what the right way forward is. But I know that down the line, HSE/NPHET will be condemned, regardless of the decision that they take.

Agree definitely with the other two!

Could you explain why you choose my post out of the thousands here to question
Because the thousands of other posts don't seem to think the numbers are just a big conspiracy. Maybe I've misinterpreted your post - hence the request for clarification.

I know this isn't the coffee thread but, is the coffee the same as when it's made by a barista? I've been thinking about one of them machines for a while.

So far mine is better and I am only learning.

NPHET are doing the best they can. The government is trying to balance the need to keep money coming into the country versus the public health crisis. I don't envy either of their jobs. They are damned whatever they do. No government party or public health group will look good in the present crisis.

    Agreed.

    My post was sarcasm.

What restrictions can they add to the mix at this stage? a 2km limit?

The fact they are even considering sending kids back to school, when all the evidence so far shows that the new strain (with 10% prevalence here) easily spreads from child to child, is obscene.

How many healthcare workers have to die? How many people have to be left bedridden for who knows how long before we pay attention to the non-death statistics as well?

I hope it's just for show and they actually have no intention of sending the kids back until we have the numbers right down, it seems like there is still time to get rid of that strain? or am I being too optimistic?

Construction and manufacturing are still open. Can't think of anything else off the top of my head. There were a lot of outbreaks on construction sites, I think?

It took us 6 weeks of level 5 to get from 1000 cases a day to 200 cases a day so I don't see how 8 weeks of level 5 could get us from 4000 a day to 200 a day

Was it really worth it, just to be able to sit down and have a sandwich in a café

Why is Varadkar saying "the new measures haven't had time to take effect" sure the Christmas visiting hasn't had time to take effect either! Isn't it better to slam on the breaks now and then ease off them later than to gently slow down now only to find out it wasn't enough later?

Well if a hospital is running out of fit and healthy staff then how are they meant to continue providing any services?

This is why we were trying to avoid breaking the health services. But I suppose it will be a case of "Hindsight" when that happens.

Should get the coffee in Bewleys in Blackrock. Get the beans or have it grounded. 1,2,3,4 or 5, whatever you preference. It's absolutely breathtaking!

Always go up and buy some when I'm in Dublin! Simply amazing!

So many people returning to work tomorrow and our Hospitals full . A Governemnt who opened up to keep Pubs and Restaurents happy for Christmas now suggesting we wait and see what happens while insisting we open schools in a week. I wish we had an election on the horizon though I admit the opposition haven't exactually added much to our situation .

This government will be remembered for ignoring public health advice and allowing one of the most social nations in the world to basically do what they want at Christmas during a global pandemic.

We are at the moment, the shame of Europe, pissing around with the vaccination (9 to 5 and starting three days late).

    Stall the hyperbole.

Where has the "1800 vaccines administered" figure come from? It seems to be gospel everywhere now, but is it one of those cases where websites are just quoting each other with no actual source?

There is the human cost as well. What happens to the poor healthcare staff who develop long-covid?

The implications for staffing is terrifying in hospitals. We cannot conjure healthcare staff out of nowhere. We have to get the vaccinations to the healthcare staff as a matter of urgency.

In fairness loads of countries beat this thing. New Zealand, Mongolia, Vietnam, South Korea... and then there were countries who were beating it but got criticized by conspiracy theorists so shifted to Sweden style and got their ass kicked, like Czech Republic and Greece. Why did we have consultants from Sweden here advising our government, when they have one of the highest death rates per capita for this in the world and we are ranked at about 40 for deaths per capita? Why was the government aiming for more deaths?

No way these numbers are not being fabricated it's a stagnant release of figures without a doubt.

    Newstalk confirmed it...
The Chief Executive of the HSE has said that over 1,800 people have been administered with a COVID-19 vaccine so far.

Paul Reid has confirmed that another 2,000 units have been distributed to County Cork which will be used in hospitals today and over the weekend.
